Thanks veggi, am getting it sorted, then I'll be back.

Good luck to those with races today. It always feels great afterwards doesn't it?

Wallace · 09/09/2007 18:06

Oh no - double bluff must still be running

Veggiemummy · 09/09/2007 18:22

yeah she said she would get on and lets us know, although i imagine they are both shattered. hope they enjoyed themselves.

DoubleBluff · 09/09/2007 18:23

LOL Wallace!
I had a wonderful race, I think I did it in an hour I get the officail time through tomorrow.
It was a lovley course - flat which was fab - and I ran all the way.
AND I got a stonking great medal as well so am dead chuffed with myself.

popsycal · 09/09/2007 19:10

Well done DOuble bluff!

Well! I am back and I did it! Apologies for the ramble that is about to follow!

We spent Saturday up in Alnwick at Alnwick Gardens in the scorching sun and I almost opted out as I was so worried about the heat. Anyway - got up this morning at 5:45 (ds2!!!) after a very broken night's sleep. Two bowls of porridge later, DH had me doubting where the start point was so I went off in the car to check. I was right of course.

Off I went to the start point - I decided NOT to wear the T shirt provided as I found it very hot to run in so I stood out rather a lot in my cerise pink nike top . Felt like billy no mates waiting around and right calf muscle was niggling.

They started us off in 2 sections: those aiming for below an hour in the front and those aiming for over an hour to the back. I went to the back of the second section, having hardly run this summer since RFL due to my dodgy leg and having never run more that 3.8 miles in my life (and that was only once!!!).

Off we set to Dancing Queen which made me chuckle - seemed an odd choice of song for the occasion. It took ages for the crowd to get going but by around the 1.5k mark, I was going at a pace I was happy with.

I decided on PLan A: try to run the first 5k then walk up the hill then run/ walk the rest. Tried to hold back a bit for the first 5k as needed to get round the rest of the race! Hit 5K dead on 36:00. Kept running looking for this hill that was meant to come. Water station appeared. No hill. Kept going: slight incline. At 6k, the hill appeared. I hit 6k at 41:46 and started power walking (passing runners . I decided that I would walk to 45:00. Then the hill vanished. So I ran again.

I had planned to walk if I felt that I needed to - but I never did .

7K onwards, I felt really strong. It was great!

The second 5k was quicker than the first 5k. My time was 67:46.

I am well chuffed. Even if I had trained, I would have been over the moon with that time

Thank you for persuading me to do it!

Wallace · 09/09/2007 19:34

Hooray!!!
Hooray!!!
Hooray!!!
Hooray!!!

Well done both of you!

I love getting the medal and T-shirt My lastest one just says Moray Marathon 2007 (there were 3 different distances at the event) so I wear that training so people think I am a marathon runner

DoubleBluff · 09/09/2007 19:52

Well done Popsy I was thinking of you as I did it.
Like you I knew no one else there and at the start I was really wondering what I was doing. Istarted well back as everyone looked to know what they were doing.
I then took great pleasure in passing a lot of people, some of whom were walking after 1k.
Do some people not realise how far 6 miles is and that you do have to train for it.
I would like t o run next time with a friend cos I felt so chuffed at the line but had no one to share it with . Thank god for mobiles!

popsycal · 09/09/2007 19:58

DH and my boys came to the finish line but they missed me...they stood at the point of 700m to go - i tolld them to get there around midday but I had just gone past! Bless ds1 - he saw the medal and said 'Mummy you won!!!' I explained that everyone got a medal and that you didn't always have to win. He said: 'Yes Mummy. I can see you did your best. Your face is pink and wet. I matches your t shirt'.

He is now refering to the medal as 'That Tesco necklace'

Wallace · 09/09/2007 20:02

My dh and kids missed me finishing too becasue I was alot faster than we expected

I knew noone when I did my 5k, but I did my 10k with a couple (didn't run together though) it was nice having someone there to share the nerves and to make sure you are in the right place etc.

There are heaps of us doing the half so should be fun

popsycal · 09/09/2007 20:18

I am thinking about what to do next. If my legs feel ok in a day or so, I will do a little 5k run on sunday that i have just found out about.

Bu after that - there is nothing I can see until the 'Love Run' in February.....

How to get through the winter?!?!?

Veggiemummy · 09/09/2007 20:50

well done both of you,was so good to hear how you both went. really pleased you enjoyed and great times. That is so good that they have the 2 starts Pops, so all the really fast amazingly fit looking ones can be up the front and all the normal people can have their own race. I can do 55 for a 10km but i think i would go in the over 1 hr race to be cheeky, and to keep away from the really nasty competitive ones. (i'm still feeling a little bitter about the nasty competitive women who sprinted past me right before the line at London Tri, i bet she doesn't have a 2 year old).

mamamoo · 09/09/2007 22:35

Fab news!!!!!!!!

Well done you two. I am so pleased that you both enjoyed it...and that is wha it is all about!! Well done!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 10/09/2007 08:26

Well done both of you

Popsy - I hate to say I told you so but I blimmin told you that you'd feel better the further you ran!!

I've been absent from the thread because I've been , well, absent from my training. Six weeks now to my 10k so I'd better pull my finger out

DoubleBluff · 10/09/2007 18:13

Pull your finger out Saggars!!
My official time was 1.01.45 and I came 990th out of 1189!
Plenty of room for improvement!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 10/09/2007 18:47

Oh Gawd DB. I'll be slower than that. That means I'll probably be last.

popsycal · 10/09/2007 18:55

Double bluff - was your timing chipped then?

popsycal · 10/09/2007 18:56
DoubleBluff · 10/09/2007 20:21

Yes we had little ankle straps with chips on. Very dainty.
Err what is a recovery run btw?!

popsycal · 10/09/2007 20:37

lol

I think a recovery run is where you run after a race to give your legs a 'stretch'.

Can do that nicely from the sofa

DoubleBluff · 10/09/2007 20:39

with a glass of wine!!
So who is next to race?
I have a half marathon lined up end of October and might try and fit a 10k in beforehand.

Veggiemummy · 10/09/2007 20:43

you can also do a short run the following morning after a race or really hard strength session to help clear the lactic acid in your muscles. just a slow 15-30min run.

popsycal · 10/09/2007 20:47

I have a question actually about what to do next!

I feel a bit of a fraud with this 10k as I had never trained any where near this (or hardly at all actually lol) so not sure what to do next. Do I go back to a training plan for 10 and 'do it properly'?

Or do I do that thing which seems quite common where you just do 2 little runs in the week then a big one at the weekend which you gradually make longer (the 10% thing...).

I have no further races in mind apart from a rough plan to do a more hilly 10k in February.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 10/09/2007 20:58

I think.....bearing in mind your leg and also bearing in mind that I've never progressed further than 10k (other than a mad attempt at a very hilly 8 miler) and am therefore in unchartered waters, that you should consolidate at this distance.

A couple of runs in the week and a longer weekend one sounds familiar.

Oh yes, I remember now - that's what I'm supposed to be doing!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/09/2007 21:06

Well done P & DB! Good running!

I have lost so much fitness over the summer holiday that I have yet to get back to doing 5k. Ah well. Keep plugging away...

nappyneeds · 10/09/2007 22:42

Im so jealous of everyone completing their 5k's - well done everyone! It is good motivation for me to get going - as Im yet to dust off the old running shoes.
