DoubleBluff · 04/09/2007 13:32

Feeling better about Sunday, ny race pack arrived this morning and I also went out and did 5.2 miles in 50 mins, so am hopeful of finishing the race even if i don't do it particularly fast.
Welcome to team GB veggie muumy!

DoubleBluff · 04/09/2007 14:06

What is the race etiquette with regard to Ipods?
I run far beeter with mine, but are they frowned upon in big races?

Veggiemummy · 04/09/2007 15:12

i have just heard the sad news the Jane Tomlinson has finally succumbed to breast cancer and died last night. I have found this women to be an amazing inspiration of just what can be achieved by anyone even someone with a terminal illness. I like to think that her acceptance of the terminal state of her illness but the non acceptance that it could stop her achieving helped her to live so much longer than the 6months predicted at her diagnosis. She was an amazing women who left amazing memories for her children.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/09/2007 18:49

I've just heard about Jane too Veggiemum.

Thinking of her family

mamamoo · 04/09/2007 20:06

I heard the news this morning whilst on the way to a home visit at work. Just sat in my car sobbing. What an amazing inspirational woman her family should be incredibly proud of her.

scattyspice · 04/09/2007 20:07

Oh I hadn't heard. That is sad.

mamamoo · 04/09/2007 20:08

ps DB ipods are frowned upon by some at races.....BUT I wore mine at a big one this weekend (only 2nd time at a race) and I'm convinced it made me go faster

popsycal · 04/09/2007 20:24

I saw the news on TV about Jane Tomlinson and felt very sad too. MAkes me want to go and try to do my 10K this weekend even though the furthest I have ever ran is 4 miles. Thinking of her family

Wallace · 04/09/2007 20:35

Very sad, she was an amazing woman.

DB - I always wear my ipod, don't care if it frowned upon can't see why it would be..?

pops - do you think you should maybe have a try at your 10k? Just taking it slowly? I bet you are a whole lot fitter than a lot of the people at mine on sunday

popsycal · 04/09/2007 20:41

wallace - i am thinking that too....

Veggiemummy · 04/09/2007 21:27

yeah just do it pops, whats the worst that can happen you don't make the full distance or you run some and walk some. well at least you tried it. If you pull out after giving it a go, that must be better than pulling out without even giving it go. and you will have an easy PB to beat. Do it in Jane's memory.

popsycal · 04/09/2007 21:39

you are right.
I will do a run tomorrow. Try to increase to 3.4 miles (2 laps of my route), then do the same or slighlty longer on friday. Then go to alnwick. Run 5K, walk the 1K uphill - then hope for the best

DoubleBluff · 04/09/2007 21:47

Go Popsy.
I am just going to try my best on Sunday and just enjoy the experience.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 04/09/2007 21:55

Hello! Nice to see you all still here. I'm afraid the summer holidays were rather disastrous - not enough child-free time to run and then I had a m/c last month. I was planning to run/walk gently throughout pregnancy but if I do conceive again I think I'll be too nervous to do any exercise.

Anyway, I did a very short slow run last week which went better than expected and I'll try to do another tomorrow.

Popsycal - I can't believe your 10k is this weekend. I think you could run/walk, even though it might offend your competitive nature!

Will now read back through thread for news...!

DoubleBluff · 04/09/2007 21:59

Sorry to hear that Duchess.
Best wishes for the future.

Veggiemummy · 04/09/2007 22:17

sorry to hear Duchess really sorry, you have sent me into another flood of tears after just recovering from watching the Jan Tomlinson tribute, i'm feeling a little fragile at the moment i guess.

Think i need a run.

pops if you did the run on sunday it would make me happy (is that a bit cheeky).

mamamoo · 04/09/2007 22:47

I'm welling up too. Duchess I have been through m/c. My running did help me emotionally at what was a very difficult phase in my life. (((((hugs))))))

Popsy you can do it. You will get a PB as its your first one...and imagine your next 10k....how much time you could knock off and what a feeling that would be for you.

You have the first 6k covered by the sounds....4k left....what is that 2 and a bit miles?....You can do that with a walk/run regime I'm sure...go go...and let us all remember Jane for the wonderful inspiration she was

popsycal · 05/09/2007 06:55

Norks - really sorry to hear your news.

I have pretty much decided that I am going to do it. I love running in Alnwick. I am going to run 5K tonight and then do a 1K walk afterwards....

popsycal · 05/09/2007 09:33

Right I am going to need some advice I have have several issues mulling through my mind (and ds2 is having his first ever trial run at the childminders and I need a distraction )

Facts
The furthest I have run is 4 miles. That was quite a few weeks ago now.
My leg is much better though is occasionally niggly.
The course is 10K with a 1K hill at the half way point. The rest of the course is pretty flat.

So
Do I run 5k then walk the hill then 'see what happens' in terms of running and walking to complete the run?
Or
Do I, say, run for 2K, have a short walk (3-4 mins) then run again up to 5K, walk the hill then plan out the rest of the run and walk in advance.

I am a girl who likes a plan........
Do I ditch the stopwatch?
I have 2 runs I can do before Sunday. Suggestions? I can't taper lol

Oh yes....I had better get gathering some sponsorship

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 05/09/2007 11:08

Popsycal - I would do the first option UNLESS your leg is still not better in which case I'd do the second option and make allowances for more short walks.

Stopwatch - only take it if you are able to not look at it during the entire run, so it gives you a basic 10k starting point for further training. I wouldn't use it to time your 5k because it'll put you under pressure to run at speed.

I did 20 minutes x-country this morning. No idea how far. I was wheezing a bit but it was very hilly . I'll try and do a flat run on a nice path at the weekend.

DoubleBluff · 05/09/2007 13:55

Option1 sounds better Pops.
ANd I can guarantee there will be many people 'running'that race who have done no training whatsover.
My first 10 k there were people pretty much walking the whole way.
I think some people see 10k as a 'funrun' event and underestimate just how far it is!
Good luck what ever you decide to do.

popsycal · 05/09/2007 17:50

Hmmm.
REALLY not sure about this. Went out for 3 miles. Forgot to turn stopwatch on. Ran fir 2.2 miles and ended up running/walking the rest of the way. Combination of feeling shattered, leg niggling and having no motivation. Then I felt so guilty about that.

I am really not sure whether I can physically manage it on Sunday even with the best of intentions.

Wallace · 05/09/2007 19:24

Duchess, so sorry to hear your bed news xxx

popsycal how long did it take you to do the 2.2 miles? Would it be possible for you to run very slowly, just faster than a walk?

popsycal · 05/09/2007 19:34

wallace - I am not sure 0 as my stopwatch did not start
I am guessing around 30 mins for the whole 3 miles.....
