Hello everyone!

I've just done the weirdest run. Planned to do a flat 5k after all the hills & x-country I've been doing. Despite stretching really well, I got a stitch about 1/2K in, so had short walk and stretched some more, but stitch kept coming back until after the 2k mark. I had to stop listening to music too as it was affecting my breathing rhythum and I very nearly gave up the run completely.

Got to 3k and was sick. But I immediately felt better, so swilled with water and carried on! Ran the rest really comfortably and in fact went on to do 6k in 41mins .

Also had to pick up some pornographic photo's that had been dropped at intervals along the route . Putting that on a different thread!!!

Wallace · 03/08/2007 08:04

Had you eaten too soon before your run perhaps?

I haven't been on for ages - been moving house. Hope everyone is doing well

My running is still going well. My runs are getting longer and longer. I did almost 5 miles last sunday (ran for 54 mins). I am maybe increasing the distance more than I should (started running start of May, did 5k 1st July) but my half marathon is middle of oct, and I've entered a 10k on 2nd sept.

My training plan says to do 4 runs a week (bupa half marathon) but I can only fit three in. The plan says :

Mon - rest
Tues - easy run
Wed - Tempo run (gradually increasing the length of the fast sections)
Thu - rest
Fri - Speed work/ easy run
sat - rest
sun - long run

Would it be enough to do this instead?:

tues - easy run
thurs - tempo run
sun - long run

popsycal · 03/08/2007 08:07

wallace if it is any consolation, i am just running
i am sort of adding half a mile per week
so the other day i did 3.9 miles. i will do the same today then my next run will be a shorter, quicker one.
the following week, i will do 4.4 miles twice then a shorter one...etc

though i realise you have a bigger run to build up to....

Veggiemummy · 03/08/2007 10:27

wallace that will be fine as long as your doing your long runs and increasing that will be fine. When i trained for marathon i did 4 training sessions a week when the training schedual said 5 and i managed it in almost the time i wanted so you'll be fine. The only thing is there is no room for dropping a run if you don't fancy it one week (of course if your tired or injured you should always rest).

i had a blocked nose last night and now feeling a little like a head cold coming on feeling very stuffed up, will not be happy if i'm getting sick as even if i rest completely before sunday i don't know if it will resolve in time. I'm looking after my DS's little friend this afternoon so 2 2yrs olds to contend with.

Veggiemummy · 03/08/2007 10:29

Duchess sounds like what wallace said something to do with food.

Though a good way to get rid of a stitch is to take a deep breath and then exhale all the breath as if you are blowing out candles on a cake. Do that about 3 times.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 03/08/2007 12:09

I'd had dinner about 1.5hrs before I went running. I'll try and leave 2 hours next time.

Will try your breathing advice too Veggie, if and when I get another stitch. It did improve with deeper breathing and I really stretched my torso up whilst running which also felt better.

Resting today and tomorrow and will do a hilly road run on Sunday morning. So if I'm not back on this thread before then....

GOOD LUCK FOR SUNDAY VEGGIE!

Wallace · 03/08/2007 20:38

Thanks

pops - I find that it is nice to add some variation by doing that tempo run (bloody hard work mind you!) And it does help me run faster, I think I'm usually a bit of a plodder.

Veggiemummy · 04/08/2007 20:28

racked my bike this afternoon at the excel center then ran home was a nice short run that got me rared up for tomorrow. very excited about the race i'm champing at the bit to get started.

popsycal · 04/08/2007 21:02

Good luck veggiemummy!!!
Hope it all goes to plan!

Veggiemummy · 04/08/2007 21:51

have to admit my only plan is to run strong, i tend to hold back a bit on the run, claiming tiredness, but i want to push hard and run a decent time. Whatever the whole time is i won't mind i just want to enjoy it and soak up the atmosphere. It was great going over today, DS, went beserk he loved all the bikes and people everywhere.

Wallace · 04/08/2007 21:51

Good luck veggiewmummy!!

popsycal · 05/08/2007 06:27

good luck

Veggiemummy · 05/08/2007 18:34

back from race, feeling completely shattered, swim was bit slow due to loads of congestion and well being a little slower in the water these days, ride was great did well considering so little training, didn't run strong like i wanted to but got around and managed to do 2hr56 all together which i was very happy with as wanted to do sub 3hrs. all up was a great day great atmoshpere and really good support from friends and family. DS was a bit bemused when some strange women with cycling sunglasses very red face and looking like she might keel over ran past him claiming to be his mother and planted a big wet sweaty kiss on his cheek then ran off. but he enjoyed the day too he was crying a didnt want me to leave him when i went off for the race, but was running around like a madman after i finished.

LittleSarah · 05/08/2007 19:11

WELL DONE!!

That sounds amazing! Good work, 3 hrs of exercise... eek!

deegward · 05/08/2007 19:17

Well done to you, did the sprint at Windsor this year and am contiplating doing London 2008. Was the run just awful, as my legs were like jelly on mine, need to do more work on my running

Veggiemummy · 05/08/2007 19:25

this was one of the hardest run legs i have ever done in a tri, maybe because i really wanted to run strong were usually i just accept defeat. it is a good race, although a little expansive but as we only live down the road and have no extra cost (accom, transport) it is cheaper than others. Is a good event very well organised, they do heaps to keep supporters happy and cheering on and they have volunteers throwing water at the runners all the way around the course so the sweltering temps weren't too bad. also lots of water stations and gatorade. all in all a very good event. this is the 4th time i have done London and every year it get better and bigger, i would register soon if i were you.

Veggiemummy · 05/08/2007 19:25

oops meant expensive not expansive.

Veggiemummy · 05/08/2007 19:27

oh and no my legs didnt feel like jelly, more like someone had removed all my thigh muscles and replaced them with wet sand.

popsycal · 05/08/2007 20:30

Wow - well done you!!
Sounds fantastic!

deegward · 05/08/2007 21:22

Nervous to commit, had you done other tri's before? I feel I have come very late to this sport now 41 and only did my first this year?

How expensive?

Much respect if this is the fourth time yo have done it, do you belong to a tri club?

Veggiemummy · 05/08/2007 21:42

it's my third full distance, i've done about 8 sprint distances, and a couple of team tri's where i did the swim leg.

this year the entry fee was £75 unless you entered for a charity then it's free and you raise money for your charity, thats what i did.

Veggiemummy · 05/08/2007 22:09

41 is def not too late to start, i dont think any age would be. there were ladies out there 55+ and i'm sure they didnt start when they were 20 the sport hasnt been around that long.

popsycal · 06/08/2007 06:10

deegward - i saw some 'fun' triathlons of shorter distances which might be a good place to start
also saw duathlons

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 06/08/2007 10:40

Fantastic veggiemummy, what a great day for you all.

Popsycal - you are SO into all this! How's 10k training going?

I did a short run last night because it was quite late and getting dark - so typically I felt as if I could run for miles and miles.

No 'picturetrail' on last nights run thankfully - Popsycal, I didn't phone police last week, when I said 'girls' I meant young women, they were all in their 20's. Hopefully that's an end to it but I don't wish to be the bearer of such embarrassing news to them!
