May I?

OP posts:
Veggiemummy · 01/08/2007 12:23

ooh also meant to add when starting out, running for a set time rather than a distance is a good idea.

LittleSarah · 01/08/2007 12:47

Thanks! I've done a few routes so that should give me more of an idea. The only thing is the site doesn't shoe the river path I run on usually so trying to work out where to stop is difficult, have a vague idea though.

LittleSarah · 01/08/2007 12:52

Looked up the Nike plus, not sure I understand it but already have shoes and ipod so don't think I'll do that! How does GPS work and how much is it? (Have had a look but am confused).

popsycal · 01/08/2007 14:24

I just use gmaps pedometer or the route finder on realbuzz to calculate mileage....

I am going to aim to do a 3.9 mile run tonight. 3.4 miles is the furthest I have done before. I have a back up plan that will allow me to shorten it to 3.6 miles if need be

mustrunmore · 01/08/2007 17:46

Qv, I know i'm odd, but running round parks seems so pointless! If I'm on a road, I kind of think I'm getting somewhere! And I get bored of parks aswell as roads

Veggiemummy · 01/08/2007 18:27

LittleSarah, if you have ipod all you need to do is get the nikeplus thing to stick in the bottom of it then another thing that you attach to your laces, i wear Asics, you dont have to wear the nike shoes, the thing just clips on very easy. it also tells you how fast you are running as you are going along. it's not essential i guess but quite good to know. i think the added bit costs about £30. you can also download your runs and compare to previous.

GPS systems are obviously better and more hightech i had one for marathon training they are very precise. but not good if you run in the city as the buildings stop the satellite signal. they also are a bit bulky and very expensive. they are getting smaller but the watch part is still only designed for mans wrists size.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 01/08/2007 18:43

I'm still here - plodding on.

Hunker - I have quite a high instep and very bony feet. I wear Asics.

Popsy - you'll do it. Don't think about your 'get out quick' route.

popsycal · 01/08/2007 18:53

Woohoo
Did it!
3.9 miles!
In around 40 mins (I say around 40 mins as I somehow managed to stop my watch after checking it after 6 mins and reckon I ran for between 2 and 3 mins without the stop watch on). I felt good. My leg twinged a bit but nothing major and I felt pretty strong.

3.9 miles. 6.2km. 40 minutes. The furthest I have ever ran!

LittleSarah · 01/08/2007 18:56

Well done popsy! I'm getting into that realbuzz, got meself a blog and everything. Hoping it will help the old motivation!

popsycal · 01/08/2007 18:59

Sarah - me too!!! I am getting slightly obsessed with the blogging malarky....
will have to guess who you are. My nickname is fairly obvious!

mamamoo · 01/08/2007 22:11

www.mapmyrun.com/ also good for measuring distance

Ipod arrived today but will take me a while to suss it out ...will try to calibrate the nike plus tomorrow

Veggiemummy · 01/08/2007 22:53

well done Popsy, and good to see how much you are excited about it.

i'm gonna check out the real buzz thing.

am missing proper training but all tapering worth it to for this sunday.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 02/08/2007 00:25

Well done Popsycal

I plan a long evening run tomorrow after trip to beach with DCs (if I still have the energy). Would love to run along the beach but I don't have anyone with me to watch the DCs.

hunkermunker · 02/08/2007 00:52

Thanks, VM, LS and SMBK - will hunt out decent running shop and get fitted properly. Tried some Asics on on Saturday, but not convinced they were right.

Popsy, brilliant! Well done!

popsycal · 02/08/2007 06:07

Thank you everyone for the nice words
Veggiemummy - I am excited about it. My knee joint hurts a bit this morning but it could just be a little stiffness. It is nothing too bad though.

Duchess - hope you manage to get your run in. The idea of running on the beach is nice in theory but I find it pretty hard work unless the sand is realy hard and compact. I prefer paths above beaches iyswim.

HUnker - hope the trainer hunting goes well. I am looking forward to going to the running shop now but am worried that it will cost me money and I am desparately skint right now and about to become more so in September.
And Veggiemummy - good luck for the weekend

This thread is SO inspiring and helpful. I'm sorry I don't input anything, but as a novice, I have no helpful advice to give! Hopefully that will change in time.

Well, I have only been running for a couple of weeks, and have gone from running for 2 minutes, to now running for 7, so I am gleefully improving quite quickly!

Thanks for the advice re. bras. I'm still sussing out what I feel comfortable running ( in public! ) in. What tops and bottoms do you all wear?

I discovered that I overpronate severely too - it's a whole new world, and absolulely fascinating!

Finding a running route has been easy for me - I live by the sea and there is a promenade which is exactly a mile long, lovely in this weather, but I think I shall have to work out an alternative route in the winter.

popsycal · 02/08/2007 08:19

Celery - well done! It is so encouraging to see your times and fitness improve so quickly isn't it! Glad you have sorted your feet out!

What I wear: M&S crop top type sports bra. The best control one I found. Although I am not huge (34C), I HATE feel self conscious about running with wobbly chest!

Clothes wise: legs - either RonHill tracksters or 3/4 length black or grey legging things
Top - drifit t shirt or vest.

I found www.sportsshoes.com was good for budget running stuff. I also found some half price Nike drifit stuff in the JJB sports sale.

HTH

popsycal · 02/08/2007 13:39

I am doing a 5K next WEdnesday. Organised by council but mainly a running club thing - but the info does say open to all abilities. I am going to use it as a training run. Same course as my RFL in July.

LittleSarah · 02/08/2007 16:41

Good luck with that popsy!

You have a blog too eh?? Lol. Well mine is under the 2008 marathon bit (god knows what I'm thinking), that may help you out, any clues for me?

Planning my runs recently and think I did 2.5 miles this morning in 32 mins. Not very impressive. Grrrr. Anyway I'm going to see how I do over 3 miles tomorrow, I need to do longer runs if I am going to be in any fit state for the 10 in October!

LittleSarah · 02/08/2007 16:42

the 10k in October!

LittleSarah · 02/08/2007 16:44

On the clothes thing - I got some mid calf running leggings and a vest top at the running shop when I got my shoes. I quite literally couldn't help myself! They are great though, I recently wore some 'normal' clothes and got so much sweatier. Ick.

popsycal · 02/08/2007 17:24

LittleSarah - you found me. But I actually found you first without realising (popsy raises her ever competitive eyebrow >

LittleSarah · 02/08/2007 17:27

Well, you did say the nickname was obvious... lol

popsycal · 02/08/2007 17:41
Smile
Veggiemummy · 02/08/2007 20:45
