popsycal · 28/07/2007 21:18

I have spent the last hour reading blogs on realbuzz to try to inspire myself that it is possible for me to do this 10K in 6 weeks time.........

mamamoo · 29/07/2007 07:46

back on - didn't get a chance to post any msgs to anyone else last night. VERY selfish of me - was knackered and wanting my glass of wine and sit down!

Popsy - whats realbuzz? I have a problem with motivation i.e just getting myself out the door....always glad once I have done. You will be fine in the 10k...just make sure once you are back on form you do your long runs consistently as poss. But don't be worried about a missed week you don't have to have your last long run as 10k - something like 8k would be fine - think someone else also mentioned this.

For the off roaders - know what you mean - I prefer off road for the secenery but can be a killer. Wobble board to strengthen the ankles??? I have knackered ankles too and when reading up about ankles once I read that off road running itself can strengthen them (as well as knacker them!).

Pinions - your point on the trainers is VERY important. Must admit I am a gadget queen but the most impt thing of all is having your gait checked (most running shops do this as standard) and get the right shoes for you( also as Duchess said). I pronate myself so always have to get motion control shoes.

Best thing about my race last night was step dd who is 11 and a lard bucket I have to say (sits at computer All time....mmmm bit like me I guess...have to reflect on that one!) Anyway she met a pal doing the 3k fun run and decided she was going to do it! I actually tried to dissuade her...jeans on...no training...thought her pal would leave her etc but her pal was good as her word and stayed with her and she LOVED it....she was straight on thr phone to her mum when she came home buzzing about what she had achieved (her comment was that she beat me and I was a professional - lol!! - 5k/3k started at same time but different points on course). That was a truly proud moment I have to say!

popsycal · 29/07/2007 08:10

Mamamoo - realbuzz.com is a health and fitness site. It has a forum which I occasionally glance at but it also has blogs from people at a variety of different levels of fitness. I started one a few weeks back (which so far just documents my frustration at NOT running!) but it is really interesting (nosey perhaps ) to read everyone else's experiences at lots of different levels!

glitterfairy · 29/07/2007 10:34

OK Serious training pre half starts tomorrow and then real efforts will be made to combine this with slimming on a grand autumnal and holiday scale!

Need encouragement and I know it will be found here.

Well done everyone on your acheivements which I have just caught up on. My problem with off road running in the country is that I spend my whole time trying not to fall over and concentrating on avoiding rabbit holes.

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 29/07/2007 13:17

well - i did it!! just got back from my first 10k which i completed in 1hr 6mins!

It was bloody hard but i really enjoyed it and didnt walk once!

popsy - you WILL be able to do it in 6 weeks, I had 7 weeks to up my mileage from 5k to 10k and it is do-able! You'll feel really proud of your self at the end! ('scuse over use of exclaimation marks - its the adrenaline)

Im hyped up for a half marathon noW!!!

glitterfairy · 30/07/2007 06:57

Well done that is fab!

I am starting my half training today.

popsycal · 30/07/2007 07:26

GO for it glitterfairy
And report back (obviously)

Pidge · 30/07/2007 20:24

Back from hols in Wales and had a quick peek through your messages - very jealous of all your great running. I took my trainers with me, but was struck down with some foul flu-like bug that had me in bed for 2 days, and then caused a chest-infection (I'm asthmatic), and has now caused a tonsil/glands infection so we got back from holiday today and I went straight to the doctors who has given me antibiotics and told me not to go to work (there had to be a silver lining somewhere!).

So no running for me for a while ... 1/2 marathon in September looking distinctly dodgy right now.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 30/07/2007 20:39

Very impressed Gertie!

How are you getting on Glitter? Have you been out today?

Popsycal - how's your leg? Was it OK after Saturdays run?

I've just done a 45min evening run. Really hard work, had a short walk in the middle. How come I ran the same route so well on Saturday? Ah, the mysteries of the human body! So apart from the odd good run, I don't feel like I'm progressing now. I'm not running again until Thursday and I'm going to do at least 5k on a flat path and see if the hills & x-country I've been doing for the past couple of weeks have improved me with that. Iyswim!

popsycal · 30/07/2007 20:47

PIdge - hope you feel better soon
Norklady () - leg was a bit sore after saturday but I went for a run tonight and ran for somewhere between 33 and 34 mins (didnt start stopwatch until abotu 30 seconds after starting to run....doh) and did 3.4 miles

My leg was 'there' but ok. Did the old frozen peas when I got in and seems not to bad at all now. Tell you what though - the last 1K was a bugger. I got home soooo sweaty - even DH was running round proferring water and telling me I ought to have a nice bath while he made dinner

I am starting to think that maybe this 10K in 6 weeks is possible.....

I am going to the running shop on Saturday with my trainers just to double check!

Happy running

mamamoo · 30/07/2007 22:02

Well done Dirtie Gertie

Good luck Glitter Fairy - I've just joined ww -3lb loss in 2 weeks - slow and steady like my running

Pidge - hope you feel better soon.

Started 10k training tonight. Only one month to go so doing RW 4 week schedule - 3 runs a week. Did 10k back in May so not starting from scratch. Did 1h 10 min - much more than would have done but that was what schedule said - 2 mile warm up 8 x 80 sec intervals with 2 to 3 min recovery and 2 mile cool down. Soooo pleased with self.

glitterfairy · 31/07/2007 06:45

Went out and was absolutely crap! Can only run for short bursts but am really annoyed with myself for allowing this to happen.

Am going to explore the mile set out round the grounds at work this lunch time and then see if I cant do the odd two miles in lunch breaks for my speed work.

popsycal · 31/07/2007 07:07

GLitterfairy - don't feel disheartened (I ought to take my own advice as I was/am still a little). You got out there - which is more than you had been doing.

I know what you mean though - I feel the same

Pidge · 31/07/2007 10:57

Am popping my antibiotics and ibuprofen and lurking here reading your messages and hoping I can get those running shoes on again soon!

Veggiemummy · 31/07/2007 23:51

hellooooo back from weekend away with DS & DH had a nice relaxing time and managed to fit in one last 10km on sunday, did a PB so was happy about that, but now have very painful groin and tight left hamstring so it's all rest and yoga until sunday. a little worried about the pain but excited about race.

i haven't had a chance to read through messages yet but i hope your all well, duchess is your cold better? pops hope your shin pain is ok now.

hunkermunker · 31/07/2007 23:54

Hello.

Want to run as need to get fit and running is outside my front door.

Can't find shoes that fit me without rubbing somewhere.

I have high arches, bony feet and need "cushioning" apparently.

Anyone got any recommendations?

TIA.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 31/07/2007 23:57

Fancy seeing you here

I'll read the thread proprly later, unless anyone wants to give me a 2 line summary?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/08/2007 11:56

There are lots of green spaces near you MRM, arent there?

I can think of a huge park, and, an open space too.

LittleSarah · 01/08/2007 12:05

Hi guys

Been running for a couple of months, trying to do half an hour 4 days a week and thinking of doing a 10k on Oct 7th. Slightly worried it is too soon, also how do you guys know how far you are running?? I run for certain lengths of time but I don't really know what distance I am doing!

Hunker - definitely get yourself to a proper running shop. I have low arches and so needed support and my shoes are great, really comfy, good fit, not blisters etc.

LittleSarah · 01/08/2007 12:06

Also does anyone have any good training plans/advice for the 10k? Remembering I don't know how far I am going, only how long I run for!!

Veggiemummy · 01/08/2007 12:22

if you want to know how far you are going without wearing a GPS or ipod nike+ you can go onto www.gmap-pedometer.com and measure your run. When you first get on it shows the USA you just have to move the curser or use the arrows to find UK then zoom in one where you live. then you click start recording on left then double click at spots along your route.
