No, I am still smugly on the wagon. Anyone else?

motherinferior · 19/09/2004 14:53

I'm STILL smugly on the wagon! And lonely in my smugness!

luckymum · 19/09/2004 15:33

I've smugly only had one bottle of red this week......and believe me its something to be smug about compared to my usual intake - and it was my birthday yesterday so I think I deserve a gold star

glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 15:36

Gold star duly awarded! I am trying to only drink at the weekends but this often means I get drunk faster then feel worse! Obviously only very infrequently!

mears · 19/09/2004 15:37

I haven't had a drink for 2 nights - which is absolutely amazing. Don't feel any better for it though (yet)

It is my 19th wedding anniversary tomorrow so DH and I have decided to go out for a meal tonight because I am working on Tuesday. Am planning to have lots of wine but that's allowed for a special occasion isn't it?

glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 16:05

Absolutely. Are you sleeping better? I always find I sleep better without the booze!

mears · 19/09/2004 16:12

Come to think of it I probably did sleep better - don't feel less tired though............

CountessDracula · 19/09/2004 19:57

4 weeks today!

Only another 3 days to go GASP. By lucky hap Thursday (our first drinking day) is our 9th wedding anniversary and my mum is coming up to look after dd so HURRAH!

Well done everyone else

motherinferior · 19/09/2004 20:33

Mears, I reckon anyone who can stay married for 19 years deserves a booze-up!

freebird · 21/09/2004 10:53

Hi I am new here so I dont know anyone. Not even sure if this web-site is in England (where I am). Well Ive tried for years to cut down on alcohol, just drinking half a bottle instead of my usual one every night, or week-ends only, even tried Hypnotherapy. Now I am certainly not what I imagine a typical Alcoholic to be, but I sure am addicted because nothing works, at least not for long. So now I have decided to give up completely. Anyone else with the same experience out there?

CountessDracula · 21/09/2004 11:04

Hi freebird - good for you - as I said further down this thread I personally find giving up for a period of time better than cutting down as you don't have the option of "just having one" which then leads to more as you obviously know!

I (and I suspect the others on this thread so far) are cutting down rather than giving up completely. My sister in law was an alcoholic and she has given up for 5 years now, she is truly a changed person - it doesn't sound to me like you are anything like she was with the quantities you are drinking, but if you can do something about it now rather than wait until it gets totally out of control you will save yourself and your family a lot of heartache.

A bottle a night is certainly too much IMHO! Way over your weekly units. Half a bottle a night is probably just about ok if you don't binge on top of that. What I find is that once I have stopped for a month I find it very easy to go back to drinking say half a bottle of wine twice or three times a week, which is much more as it should be!

CountessDracula · 21/09/2004 11:05

Oh sorry, and welcome to mumsnet! Yes it is in the UK but there are mums (and dads) from all over the world posting on here. watch out though, it's as addicitve as wine

where are you based?

fio2 · 21/09/2004 11:09

yes freebird i am the same a bottle of wine a night and I am useless at giving up too

I am so excited, two replies already, thank you. I live in Dorset, really lovely area with beutiful beaches. I spoke to my Hypnotherapist today and he reminded me that when I booked my session that he had said stopping completely was much easier (if you are addicited) than cutting down. So I am going to see him next week and GO FOR IT! I will try not to drink between now and the apponitment so that I have a head start.

oooh well done ks!

Freebird, best of luck with your hypnotherapist

motherinferior · 21/09/2004 12:25

Freebird, I'm doing cutting-down rather than giving up completely but I'm rather daunted by how much better I feel when not drinking at all!

Personally I don't want a drink at the moment I want a large, stodgy and fattening meal

freebird · 22/09/2004 08:40

Night one and not a drop of wine has passed my lips. This morning I feel GREAT!!! Amazing the depth of sleep you get when you don`t drink alcohol.

fio2 · 22/09/2004 08:45

i am a failure, sorry everyone

freebird how do you get a hypnotherapist?

Ks - we can't have drink in the house either. I've never been able to fathom people who have drinks cabinets - how do you do it? I would just drink every evening until its all gone.

freebird · 22/09/2004 10:09

What is a pre-prandial? Sorry for ignorance. Yes I also could not have a drop in the house I would just HAVE to drink it.
Fio2, if you look in the Yellow pages you will find lots of Hypnotherapists. The important thing is to ensure that they are registered with one of the recognised governing bodies. Personal reccomendation is the very best way though, where do you live?
If you do choose one from the Yelllow pages phone them to discuss your problem and make sure that they are able to treat you before you pay them any cash, as some Hypnotherapists say that they are unablt to treat alcohol addictions.

freebird · 22/09/2004 10:15

By the way fo2,you are NOT a faiure. You are on a difficult path but each step will get you closer to your goal. Richard Branson said "I have learnt more from my failures than my successes".

luckymum · 23/09/2004 23:16

Ouch.......I fell off the wagon
