For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

BB were you part of the dark mutterings? Have you all taken a vow of secrecy?

Toot personally - and realise we're all pretty different on this one - but i'd say ok, it's once a week, they have a great diet all the rest of the time. I let my dds choose something for 20p from the shop after school on a friday, they always go for a lollipop or little packet of sweets that look like fried eggs or teeth. They don't ask the rest of the time - and it means i can eat a packet of love hearts.

Tatties · 26/06/2007 23:15

TT - in principle I could probably deal with ds having the odd bit of junk, but I wouldn't be happy with it atm from a dental pov - teeth brushing is a bit hit and miss so I want as little sugar going in as possible. If you think you can infiltrate and bring about subtle changes I would

TooTicky · 26/06/2007 23:16

Boco your dp sounds like a true gem. I have to boil my mooncup privately so as not to have faces made about it.

ahundredtimes · 26/06/2007 23:19

TT I think okay probably. There'd be no harm in suggesting something other than the sweets though if you wanted to.

Boco · 26/06/2007 23:21

hundred it sounds worse than it is. It's not like boiling down chicken bones for stock or anything. It's just a perfectly clean little cup thing. Ask franny to send you one - you'll love it. Better than nasty nasty tampons.

TooTicky · 26/06/2007 23:22

It's not so much the sweets in principle, as the actual ingredients. You know, hydrog oils, colours, flavours, gelatine. There are better sweets out there but they cost more and I am not in a position to be financially magnanimous about it. Or I would. Oh, and the squash - that's just evil.

ahundredtimes · 26/06/2007 23:22

She's gone hasn't she? Bugger. We'll have to gang up on her tomorrow night and find out what Really Happened.

TooTicky · 26/06/2007 23:22

Oh, much nicer than tampons. I'm wearing mine now, and you can't tell, can you?

ahundredtimes · 26/06/2007 23:23
ahundredtimes · 26/06/2007 23:24

Sorry, that was very very immature of me.

Tatties · 26/06/2007 23:27

TT could you say something like "Oh you know my dcs go mad when they've eaten/drunk XYZ, but they're fine with this" and suggest alternatives like that?

Tatties · 26/06/2007 23:27

Oh and Mooncups are FAB

TooTicky · 26/06/2007 23:30

Thanks Tatties, I might do that. I'm worrying about the squash atm as it can do dreadful things to the throat and chest IME.

MrsCarrot · 26/06/2007 23:32

I have been up to feed LO twice and F is still not back?

Toot- I don't like mine eating normal sweets, our grocers is quite good for healthy ish ones, but they do have them now and then, and eat a LOT of chocolate. Howeverm despite my protestations, my mother always buys dd something disgusting like bursting bugs. I would maybe attempt to infiltate but you might be on to a lost cause.

I am curious about mooncups, but do not need them yet, or maybe never, not sure how curios I am. (Sorry 100)

ahundredtimes · 26/06/2007 23:34

No don't mind me Mrs C, I'm silly. Okay off to bed will leave you to your mooncups and come back tomorrow and MAKE franny dish the dirt.

MrsCarrot · 26/06/2007 23:36

yes, me too, dh is now snoring on the sofa, his friend wobbled off, reckon they drank too much whiskey

TooTicky · 26/06/2007 23:37

I should be going to bed but am hoping to get at least one reply on my threading beads thread...

NotQuiteCockney · 27/06/2007 07:26

Goodness me, lots of interesting ideas about meetups.

The Xmas meetup was dark, as in, it was held in a nightclub, which was quite noisy and dark. Frances didn't mingle a great deal.

How on earth would a meet up go wrong?

Almost all the Bad Things which cause stress on MN happen on MN, from what I know.

FrannyandZooey · 27/06/2007 07:27

Good LORD haven't you all figured out by now that I go to bed EARLY. We wrinklies need our beauty sleep.

Now, about this meet up....unfortunately it was so dark, and so long ago, I can't remember a single thing about it, would you believe it and I am going out for the rest of the day so you will have no luck stalking me

TooT I know it is terrible but I could not actually hack the squash and the sweets. Those are the two things I couldn't resign myself too. But must go as dp needs the pc so more later....

fillyjonk · 27/06/2007 07:40

oh god i cannot keep up with this thread. i do try but...you all talk soooo much

ticky i must say i bring a prefered healthy treat for my kids, say apple juice and a few cheesy oatcakes. but remember that mine are nearly 4 and nearly 2 so its easier.

would not bother infiltrating from within personally. nothing seems to get mummies backs up as much as suggesting that pouring gallons of tatrazine down their los throats is not a good idea (see Food/Health topics for more).

healthwise its minimal i think, but what pisses me off is the idea that asda smartprice sawdust shavings and azo dyes is not just good for our kids but somehow , by virtue of their cheapness, better, otherwise they get uppity. there is this weird idea that you should spend as little as possible on kids food.

rant over

SauerKraut · 27/06/2007 08:35

Doh. Would love to attend a meet-up., can't you all come and have it here? It is a very 10/10 sort of place, almost a "wellness oasis" in fact, as they say here. I know there are tickets for 10 quid from London....
F&Z thanks for the re-welcome! I have been slipping badly but am trying to rectify-I only feel like shit coz of all the shit I've been eating. I had gruel with banana mashed into it.
So far today I have had drop scones with redcurrants.

I think DS1's school does squash a lot. I've tried it, and it's horrible. I think they serve it for everything. The food is otherwise fine (english nursery food, I think, really), but the squash is gross.

DS1 still drinks water at home. I should try to do something about it I guess ...

I don't like the whole 'sugar + additives = treat' equation, either ...

Boco · 27/06/2007 09:37

Agree about the squash - when i was small if ever i was given squash my lungs would itch and i'd have breathing problems - so won't risk it with my dds.

And know you're all right about the crap being a treat - but in our house it still is - a rare treat- but i feel like that about sugar and must've passed on my bad ways.

My kids snack on fruit when they're at home - easily get 5 portions, usually more, and their diet is great - but they know sweets are a treat as they see their friends having them all the time - and i'd rather they had a couple of sweets once a week than feel like they're missing out and build them up to being something amazing and crave them. That's what i did - we had all fizzy drinks, junk, sweets totally banned and grew up on black eyed bean stew - and i still think of sweets as some huge treat - and still eat them like a child. Have a bit of a refresher habit. Need support group.
