For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information if you follow the link at the very bottom of the page

Had grapes & brazil nuts as snack

warm chicken salad for supper..green beans, asparagus, cherry toms, rocket, little gem,basil..with flax oil & cider vinegar & dijon mustard dressing & pine nuts.

TooTicky · 20/06/2007 18:31

Lullabyloo, my dp eats shit. He won't eat with the rest of us because everything is too healthy, "bitty" (rice, couscous, quinoa, etc), "watery" (less salty than he likes), or he complains about the veg. Wish I had had more faith in myself (instead of being affected by loud whinging) and fed dcs more variety from the start.

Lullabyloo · 20/06/2007 18:32

No....I have to cook his too...or he eats cheese n crackers instead.
Will eat a salad nicoise or lentil soup if I make it or a tomato pasta dish....little else

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2007 18:32

TooT ds is pretty good (he's only 4 which I know helps) and will always try something new, in fact his idea of a huge treat is "something I have never had before"

He would eat fruit and veg all day if given the chance

however usually not enthusiastic about beans / carbs, which really are more important than f+v for growth etc I suppose

I nag him a little bit about eating the carb stuff and we muddle through

he also turns his nose up at quorn (very sensible but awkward as I like it and dp misses meat)

ds says daddy eats nasty rubbish & wont have big muscles like him...chortle

How can one be fitness orientated but eat crap?

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2007 18:42

LOL at big muscles

I need to go to the gym tonight and do my arms but am flagging....

pep talk please

OP posts:
lionheart · 20/06/2007 19:03

Get to the gym--work those biceps. You never know when you might decide to get a tattoo or be invited to the Palace for a garden party, Franny, you really don't.

Have had no pineapple aftershocks but have had apple, (gallons of) smoothie, cue, lettuce,

and am munching on a bag of pea shoots which I have never seen before in my life but are rather tasty and a bit like eating grass.

Lullabyloo · 20/06/2007 19:05

cant ever get to the gym so have started doing weights here instead...arms need toning up badly.
Pink kettlebells are great

Mrscarrot · 20/06/2007 19:44

are we writing down all the food stuffs, dressings and nuts etc now, or just fruit and veg? Are nuts in the ten or this that part of the 26 natural foods?

Sorry, questions questions.

I have had vegi sushi. Again. Bit bored of it now but it's one of the few dairy wheat free things I can grab in town.

So, since breakfast, nori, corn, spinach, carrot, pepper, beetroot, lettuce, cue, two more nectarines and some cherries and dried apricots. Big salady tea with spring onions radishes, asparagus (two portions worth} tomatoes, huge pile of local picallili, loads of cauli and courgettes in it. More nectarine.

Dh eats what I give him, but he says things aget a little 'beany' and 'sprouty' now and then.

Dc's eat everything except mushrooms. They didn't much like the broad beans yesterday but I made them eat some.

I am making felt balls for LO and feeling very mumsy.

Mrscarrot · 20/06/2007 20:10

Lullabyloo- do you just use a rolling mat for your sushi? I tried that a few times and it always sticks, looks a right mess in the end and I need to use a fork

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2007 20:26

MrsC I think there are a few different things going on here.

  1. people listing their 10 (or more) F+V
  2. people listing their 26 natural foods
  3. people describing what meals they have eaten (I must say this does make more interesting reading than the bald list I tend to do, and reading them gives me ideas)

I don't care which, if any, people prefer to do. Shall we muddle on as we are or is it getting too confusing?

Also, what are felt balls, and could you make some for my wnaky baskets?

Lionheart not surprisingly I really like Holdenisms. Pea shoots sound.....different

Lullaby what on earth are pink thingies? A kind of weight?

I went to the gym but zonked out before getting to the bicep bit. Did 5 mins on rower, 60 stomach wotsits, inner and outer thighs (doing v-e-r-y nicely this week) and then felt wave of exhaustion and sloped out to walk along the river and look at baby coots that had just hatched out instead

Franny. I'm feeling really yuk about myself and know that exercise would help.

Have you started a thread about exercising? If so, can I join?

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2007 20:42

Hi Bubble, we aim to exercise on here as well, it isn't just healthy eating, so please do join us if you think it would help, we would love to have you

I think there are other threads specifically about exercise if that would suit you better? But for me I find that good eating and exercising go hand in hand, and that eating well goes a long way to improving my mood and how I feel about my body.

Bubble99 · 20/06/2007 20:43

I do agree. Just the act of buying, preparing and eating good stuff, puts me in a better place.

nannyogg · 20/06/2007 20:47

Ok, today I've had cucumber, celery, cherry tomatoes, apple juice, grapes, dried raisins and mushrooms.

Also had olives with lunch but I really am clueless as to whether they count?

Been feeling a bit rough all day tbh, banging head.

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2007 20:54

Oh join us then Bubble, just dive in and start posting about what you have eaten, any ideas you need for healthy eating, any problems, exercise you have done etc

Nannyogg it sounds like a detoxy headache to me - nasty for you but will soon pass and you will hopefully feel full of energy and serenity. Meantime drink lots of water and go to bed early. I am sure olives count but if you want to check anything, the link in the OP is useful.

Mrs Carrot....hardly ever bother with a mat tbh...toasting the nori, spreading with whizzed up avocado, spring onion & lemon juice & being sparing with the filling (usually brown rice, toasted sesame seeds, finely julienned carrot, pepper & cucumber)means it usually all stays together..also helps if you refridgerate it for a few hrs before slicing.
(my first few attempts were awful...too much filling & too wet)

Franny...yeah pink kettlebells are weights

Ooh, I love sushi! I have made it but remember it being quite time-consuming - must do it again.
I'm disappointed about the pink kettlebells - I thought they must be some kind of wonderful edible flower.
I like the sound of the pea shoots though, but must remember to cover the ears of my pea plants if talking about them.

TooTicky · 20/06/2007 23:26

avi, you can get nori sheets (for rolling sushi, etc)and nori flakes for sprinkling. They have a lovely sea-ish but strangely not fishy taste.

Lullabyloo · 21/06/2007 08:43

yes avi...the black/green shiny strips

TooT...lol at edible flowers

Brekkie today...grilled peaches with raspberries & blueberries
Hazelnuts & pumpkin seeds
