I recieved this email this morning.....

All,

Thanks for your best wishes on my other thread.

Carys was admitted on Thursday morning to the our local Paediatric unit with an unknown viral infection. She was tested and on Thursday evening, we got the bad news that she is RSV Positive. We were told that it was going to a rocky road as this virus is very dangerous for newborns and prems.

Thursday night was ok. She held her own without support. Unfortunately on Friday morning she started deteriorating (as expected) and was placed in a full High Dependency Unit. She was hooked up to every monitor known to man, a drip and a zillion wires and placed in a resuscitair. Yesterday was rocky - her sats were swaying wildly and every slight bit of stress was sending her Heart Rate, Respiration and SATS haywire. Just after lunch DH and I decided to insist on a transfer for her to a Neonatal ICU - unfortunately because of the virus (which is very contagious), we couldn't find a bed anywhere in Cape Town in a PICU/NICU in an isolation ward. It was decided to transfer her to the adult ICU in our local hospital which is where she remains now.

My darling girl is fighting for her life. She is stable but critical. Please mumsnetters, please pray and send all of your best thoughts (I truly believe in being positive) to us.

My life is upside down, my baby is so sick and I am sitting her in the family room in the middle of the night almost too scared to go into the Unit for fear of bad news.

God help us.

I'll try to keep you all updated when I can.

Love dejags

Dejags, my heart was in my mouth when I read this, I had no idea until I opened the emial. I hope with ever single fibre in my body that Carys makes a quick recovery and is able to come home again soon to be with her gorgeous big brother and adoring mum and dad.

I'll be thinking of you all.

Emma.

Thanks for the update dejags. You must feel torn in two with the boys and being there for Carys.

Sounds good that she is getting cross with you - she sounds like a real little fighter.

More positive vibes heading your way - hoping she has a good day and another good night tonight and gets stronger.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/06/2007 09:51

It's great to hear a positive update dejags. She sounds feisty and that's got to be a good sign Here's hoping she can stay off the vent and is out of ICU very soon. X

Elibean · 03/06/2007 09:55

Thanks for the update, Dejags, I'm so glad little Carys is holding her own.

It sounds as though you're getting to or even past that fifth day now...I know it varies a bit, but the norm is for things to get better from now on in. Slowly at first, then faster and faster, and before you know it that last tube comes out: Mischa's first real smile was the day she turned 5 weeks and the NG tube finally came out

I also remember the strain of rushing back and forth from home to hospital, trying to keep it together for dd1 (through her birthday and Xmas ) and its really rough going, especially so soon after giving birth. Its rough on the whole family, being separated so soon after a new arrival. I hope you're getting lots of support, and your dp too, and that you'll all be back together again soon.

Big fat hugs to you, and ongoing thoughts and get well wishes to Carys...I hope she's out of ICU very soon.

Elibean · 03/06/2007 09:58

ps - in case it helps: I do remember Mischa having good nights, then seeming to dip down during the late afternoon and early evening. I guess thats when viral activity is at its peak, and also when kids are tired (and babies fretful/colicky etc). It worried me a lot at the time, when it was hard to step back and see the overall recovery process - so if the same happens to Carys, try not to worry. If her blood gasses are improving overall, and she's not getting worse, she's on the mend

Pinkchampagne · 03/06/2007 10:03

Good news that Carys (gorgeous name btw!) is making such improvements - she sounds a real little fighter! Hope she is home with you again soon.xx

Chopster · 03/06/2007 10:04

thank you for updating, lovely to hear that carys is being so strong. Hope she is back home with you soon. xxx

foxinsocks · 03/06/2007 10:12

oh I'm so glad things are looking a bit more positive dejags - hope this continues

numptysmummy · 03/06/2007 10:59

Great news - my dd2 had a virus at a wk old and she too was up and down for a little while, mostly early eves but i think that was tiredness and not being very settled then anyway. As you say,the docs are always over cautious which of course is the right thing to do but hell for parents.Take care of yourself as well. In our prayers.

ScummyMummy · 03/06/2007 11:09

So pleased she is progressing well, dejags.

scootermum · 03/06/2007 11:12

Sounds hopeful Dejags..good news..thinking of you all xx

Coolmama · 03/06/2007 11:47

Hi Dejags - so sorry you have to go through this, but your sweet angel sounds like she is putting up a good solid fight - little ones can be so much sronger than we realise.
Please know that we are keeping you all in our thoughts, hearts and prayers.

BecauseImWorthIt · 03/06/2007 11:58

Have only just seen this. All good wishes and positive thoughts.
