I recieved this email this morning.....

All,

Thanks for your best wishes on my other thread.

Carys was admitted on Thursday morning to the our local Paediatric unit with an unknown viral infection. She was tested and on Thursday evening, we got the bad news that she is RSV Positive. We were told that it was going to a rocky road as this virus is very dangerous for newborns and prems.

Thursday night was ok. She held her own without support. Unfortunately on Friday morning she started deteriorating (as expected) and was placed in a full High Dependency Unit. She was hooked up to every monitor known to man, a drip and a zillion wires and placed in a resuscitair. Yesterday was rocky - her sats were swaying wildly and every slight bit of stress was sending her Heart Rate, Respiration and SATS haywire. Just after lunch DH and I decided to insist on a transfer for her to a Neonatal ICU - unfortunately because of the virus (which is very contagious), we couldn't find a bed anywhere in Cape Town in a PICU/NICU in an isolation ward. It was decided to transfer her to the adult ICU in our local hospital which is where she remains now.

My darling girl is fighting for her life. She is stable but critical. Please mumsnetters, please pray and send all of your best thoughts (I truly believe in being positive) to us.

My life is upside down, my baby is so sick and I am sitting her in the family room in the middle of the night almost too scared to go into the Unit for fear of bad news.

God help us.

I'll try to keep you all updated when I can.

Love dejags

Dejags, my heart was in my mouth when I read this, I had no idea until I opened the emial. I hope with ever single fibre in my body that Carys makes a quick recovery and is able to come home again soon to be with her gorgeous big brother and adoring mum and dad.

I'll be thinking of you all.

Emma.

I'm so sorry that Carys is having such a tough time and hope that she's on her way back up now.

Fwiw, ds2 has spent the past three years in & out of ICU in a research capacity and his non-medical observation is that if a patient is stabilised and 24hrs goes by, they'll be going home.

Dejags and family,
I am sending you big hugs and positive thoughts from all of us. I know how scary it can be having little one in intensive care but the staff are excellent and really know what they are doing. Carys is in the best place, keep strong and if will power has any effect she will be on the mend soon from all the positive Mumsnet vibes.
My thoughts and prayers are with you love Charleymouse.

Thank you so much. Your prayers and good wishes mean so much to us both.

Sorry that I haven't updated. It's a bit difficult to get away and when I do, I normally go home to see the older children. I have been looking at this thread though - and it has helped me tremendously. Particularly the experiences of others and the fact that the outcomes have been so good. Our paediatrician and supporting doctors have been erring on the side of caution in terms of her prognosis which I have found stressful, because they wouldn't give me a straight answer.

Carys has had another very good night . She is getting extremely cross with us - her drips and lines are irritating her greatly and she wastes no time letting us know. She started crying again properly yesterday - music to the ears.

She is still in ICU - her secretions into the upper airway have been increasing and they need to keep an eye on this until it resolves. There was still talk of intubating her last night because she was very stressed but I am hoping that as she has had a good night, this wont be necessary.

I wont tempt fate by putting anything in writing, but suffice to say that we are happy with her progress.

Thanks again to you all. These past five days have been truly awful and you helped to ease that.

Bless you dejags. Thank you so much for letting us know. Keep strong for Carys.xxx

MaryBS · 03/06/2007 07:11

Dejags - Carys is in my prayers... Carys means "love" doesn't it, in Welsh? Is that right? A beautiful name! May God's love and infinite care be with your little one...

belgo · 03/06/2007 08:54

thanks for updating us. I hope she makes a full recovery very soon.
