Ok drs is going to take ages and I am on my own but really scared and want to know whats wrong with me..

I get this feeling like I'm going down hill on a rollacoster followed quickly by a boom in my throat like my heart has missed a beat then go all dizzy and start fretting

What is it - is it a pannic attack??

If so please tell me they go away or I can take something??

Perhaps its a virus. I would take some ibuprofen.

noddyholder · 12/05/2007 15:11

It does sound like anxiety Can you lie down for 10 mins and take some deep breaths?

monkeymonkeymoomoo · 12/05/2007 15:11

Sounds like a panic attack, try and breathe through it... breathing from your stomach (put a hand on her tunmmy and push it out taking deep breaths). Also try and get some fresh air, maybe stroll around the garden? Camomile tea also works.

powder28 · 12/05/2007 15:11

what you describe sounds a bit like what I have experienced. Do you ever get migraines?

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 15:17

I have had a migrane but only one and not for a long long time. It is in the background IYKWIM and keeps happening, you really feel like your going to die - can you take pills for it to make them go away??

Some Drs prescribe ADs but TBH they are better dealt with through relaxation techniques As an emergency measure Bach Rescue Remedy is good.

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 15:20

Rescue Remedy?? can I get that form the chemist? I really dont like it makes you want to cry.

powder28 · 12/05/2007 15:36

rescue remedy is available from health food shops like Holland and Barrett, it's excellent, I give it to ds1 when he is overwrought.
How you feeling now Hillary?

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 15:38

this sounds like something that happened to me, some sort of palpitation that my doctor described as a ventricular ectopic beat. The heart chucks in an extra beat so it takes longer to recover and make the following one, hence the missed beat feeling, i used to feel like my heart was trying to jump out of my chest. I only used to feel dizzy if i had several at a time, but used to feel very anxioux which one would i guess after that happening, but also a physiological response because it makes the body think, eh up, somthing gonna happen, fight or flight etc. Apparently very common and nothing to worry about, which is not so easy to say at the time!! I was told to cut back on alcohol and caffeine (yeah i know, disaster!) but that didnt stop it, it turned out to be a reaction to some antihistamines i was taking. It hasn't happened for a while and only tends to happen if i am really stressed or over tired. Turns out loads of people i know have similar things happen, and was told that lots of people have this and don't even notice.

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 15:40

oh, and hillary, rescue remedy is brilliant, i never used it for that but have often had to use it if i get uptight. I used to have a job where i needed to do very intricate procedures and my hands used to shake where i would fret over my hands shaking (you know how it is) this used to work a treat. Now i keep some in the house all the time, hubby thinks its bonkers but it works.

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 15:41

Really Lucy I feel dreadful want to go and sit in the pharmacy 'just in case'.

Its really scary

I had panic attacks for over a year and I used to get pins and needles in my face and hands, and i could hardly breathe. It got to the point where I couldnt sleep and it ruled my life, then it just went away.Part of it was uncontrolled asthma though.

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 15:43

monkeymoomoo, funnily enough my doctor said that VPBs are often treated with anti-depressants, but thought the same, best to try and ignore and relax (easy for him to say!) but they went on their own (about an hour before 24hour ecg attached )

powder28 · 12/05/2007 15:44

Hillary, it's completely normal, nothing is going to happen to you. Go outside and breathe slowly for a few minutes, then have a hot drink and something to eat, like a biscuit. I used to find they were particularly bad if I hadnt eaten.

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 15:45

I used to have asthma, I do get pins & needles in hands, feels like theres no air in the room and my throat is tight, which you then worry about making it worse The floor goes all wobbly, I'm ok when I'm outside walking but as soon as I get into the car or house It starts again

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 15:45

shit, hilary, i was hoping to make you feel better i am always shit at explaining things, but what i was trying to say was dont worry, if its what i had it is nothing to worry about. I did feel like that at the time though and what you describe sounds similar.

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 15:47

sorry lucy just on my own and scared for my children in case I drop down dead, I know its not going to happen but really feel awful, I know what you are saying, there is nothing physically wrong just fear.

OP posts:
powder28 · 12/05/2007 15:48

yes it feels like you have a lump in your throat, oo er missus, and that there is no air. I would book in to see the asthma nurse to check your asthma hasnt returned.
Have you eaten today?

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 15:49

you need to realise that you are ABSOLUTELY fine. I would make an appointment on monday to see the doc, who will be able to give you some info re relaxation. powder is right, go and sit outside, eat something and then go and watch the telly. Alternatively, go and read some of the AIBU threads to have a laugh.

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 15:51

Yes lucy my brain know that but my body says otherwise, will make an appointment, I want to go home but cant sound like a right kid now No not eaten today, just meal replacement shake

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 15:52

oh hillary, i felt just as you did, i was due to go on holiday the week mine started and i was convinced i wasnt going to live that long, i made my doctor cross his heart that i would be ok, he said he couldnt promise i wouldnt get run over by a bus but he promised that my heart wasnt about to stop though Its difficult on here to reassure and im sorry if my post worried you but really, you are going to be fine. None of us are doctors though so you should put your mind at rest on monday and go and visit the docs, i was so much better once i had it checked and relaxed about it, once i knew it was nothing serious they seemed to stop happening. its a vicious circle this stress thing.

lucyellensmum · 12/05/2007 15:54

are you at work? why havent you eaten, TBH that sounds like the trigger, get a mars bar, bugger the diet! i sound like my mother now!

powder28 · 12/05/2007 16:04

Also, you could be anaemic. I had to take iron tablets a few months back, I felt dreadful. I still don't feel great but it's all food related, which, i suspect, it is for you too?

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 16:08

Hmm could be food related I suppose

I'm at home at the moment, I do feel like i'm walking in a tunnel most of the time, only half here iykwim

I completely understand, and it isnt something you can fix overnight, but at least you can tell yourself that when these attacks happen they are normal and will pass eventually.

In the end I had to force myself to get on with things. If I felt the feeling creeping up on me I would go and lean my arms on the table, then i would put my head on my arms and close my eyes and concentrate on my breathing. That seemed to work for some reason. I also forced myself to start eating normally which was hard, as i was living on air practically. I still have food issues but they arent as bad, although my family would disagree!

Am I making any sense?
