Ok drs is going to take ages and I am on my own but really scared and want to know whats wrong with me..

I get this feeling like I'm going down hill on a rollacoster followed quickly by a boom in my throat like my heart has missed a beat then go all dizzy and start fretting

What is it - is it a pannic attack??

If so please tell me they go away or I can take something??

hillary, it is most prob food-related. please have something to eat. i know its tough but your body needs it.

cathcart · 12/05/2007 16:34

Hills, it does sound like a panic attack for sure. I've had these several times and the symptoms are as you've described. You have had some great advice on here already, I can second the Rescue Remedy, a warm drink and perhaps a small snack. Sit down and talk it through with us for as long as you need. If you feel breathless, walk slowly outside and take some deep breaths. It sounds silly but when you are outside pretend to yourself that you have gone outside to admire the garden/trees, a flower, something pretty that you can focus on and study the detail.
If this is the first time you have had this then don't worry it doesn't mean it will return, but if it continues then it will help to see someone about it. As you said before it could just be an accumulation of everything that has been going on and the anxiety of meetingnew people today.
I am normally a very calm person and an attack like this sprung upon me out of the blue when I was on my way to cover a staff shortage in another branch of work one day. I had been worried about it and ended up in hospital getting checked out before they would let me on the train to come back home! Now I can spot the signs and do what I need to before it escalates. The main thing to remember is that you can remain in control!

How are you feeling now? When I have panic attacks I do something that sounds cheesy but works for me. I lay down in a quiet room and take several deep breaths. I then imagine a light at the top of my head. Its warm and beautiful. I imagine that it starts to move down my body very slowly, bathing me in this light. I imagine that it is making me completely relax when the light hits me. This can take up to ten or 15 minutes and it does help me relax

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 16:41

no not seeing one anymore, I booked myself into a private clinic but it all went pear shaped, I changed my gp and he wont refer me yet says he wants to give me some time, he gave me pills to take but I stopped taking them, not a very good gp.

Hillary, I can't advise you because I don't know your situation but I do understand. Even when i felt at my worst I still didnt want to eat.

Even though I knew it would make me feel better, think more clearly, etc, I still found it so hard. I still do, but when you're used to a routine, it seems scary to break it.

paulaplumpbottom · 12/05/2007 16:58

Hmmmm that might make things worse. You need to relax not stress yourself

noddyholder · 12/05/2007 17:01

I had one on thursday night after being free of them for a few years.I really thought I was dying and was considering not booking my holiday which is in August!I lay down for about 30 mins and dp stayed with me and it subsided probably because i haev had them before and was able to talk myself round (anyone who has panic attacks will know what i mean) It is the detached feeling that is so scary and the choking sensation.Rescue remedy is good and cut down on caffeine etc but relaxation techniques and therapies like reiki are brilliant for them

Mercy · 12/05/2007 17:05

I have panic attacks too from time to time.

I did a thread on this earlier this week as I had 2 of them in one morning; dh reckoned it was low blood sugar as I don't always eat very well at night. I think he may be right.

Can you manage to eat some chocolate or a teaspoon or so of sugar?

noddyholder · 12/05/2007 17:06

Agree mercy and a cup of hot tea with a spoon of sugar is good too HTH They really are the worst things.I have been on red alert since I had the last one as I am terrified of another coming

cathcart · 12/05/2007 17:06

hills, why are are you ? you have nothing to be embarrassed about!

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 17:09

No dont feel up to it but need something to make it stop, I keep crying and my dd is getting worried

Hilllary · 12/05/2007 17:10
