Popsycal dont worry it helps sometimes.

Am going to cycle and swim today as I went to the gym yesterday and my legs ache. Running on Saturday and Sunday so that will make x4 this week which is fine.

Foxey · 28/06/2007 09:21

Hi all, went for 40 minute run last night (no idea how far)in the rain, I read on that runners website that glitter recommended that you should just focus on the amount of time you run rather then distance when starting off...(again) which I like the idea of and it went really well. I won'r run further til next week, do my 5k this weekend and see how I feel. Also, during part of my run my knee felt weird not painful just like it needed to click into place?/ anyway i kept going nice and gently as was'nt painful and it went away. I have'nt had any pain today either so hopefully nothing to worry about. Well done girlies on your runs! How are you measuring your distances by car then running them?

Lilliput · 28/06/2007 10:32

check out www.gmap-pedometer.com for measuring running distances and planning routes, it's brilliant.

glitterfairy · 28/06/2007 11:50

Lilliput it looks brill but I have found it quite difficult to use. Are there any instructions?

Pidge · 28/06/2007 12:27

glitterfairy - I love gmap pedometer - the only thing I've found tricky is finding my location. Click on More Options and select United Kingdom from the 'Choose' list, then you may need some trial and error to find your location. Try a town or city name, and then navigate around and zoom in to find where you are.

You only have to do this once as you can bookmark a route and then return to it.

To measure a route, hit "start recording" then double click on the map where you want to start measuring from, that sets your first flag, now double click on the next point you want to run to, and so on round your route. When you're done click "Save route" and copy and paste the URL into your browser and bookmark it.

have fun!!

MingMingtheWonderPet · 28/06/2007 13:55

I love gmap-pedometer too. Much easier than driving round routes trying to work out distances, and much cheaper than a garmin forerunner (though not so wizzy, I guess!)

Foxey · 28/06/2007 16:10

Thanks Pidge your instructions helped, I found my run but am v disappointed at it being just under 3 miles - it took me about 40 mins!!!! surely can't be right. Will drive the other run I did at the weekend which was 3 and check my time again. DH reckons you could walk it at that speed

glitterfairy · 28/06/2007 17:56

Right am going to try it alter and when I have moved I think Pidge as I dont know my new area too well. It is my nearest town but I dont know any runs near and will probably do a reccy on my bike to see what is what.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 28/06/2007 18:41

I love www.fetcheveryone.com for the same route measuring facility. They also have a training log you can keep for yourself on line, then it plots graphs for you as well, works out calories burnt, predicts your 10k time, etc. Really good.

popsycal · 28/06/2007 18:45

i love map my run
you can use the little scroll thing of the mouse to zoom in
good training log too

TheDuchessOfNorks · 28/06/2007 20:21

I have an Omron Walking Style II pedometer which initially I used for er, walking. I wasn't sure how accurate it would measure running but the distances it records are the same as what I work out from a map. And it was only £20 from Amazon. I may buy something more whizzy if I continue with the running and don't do anything stupid like get pregnant again.

I did a very slow 2k today - first run since Tuesdays 5k. After about 10yds my legs really ached. I ran on anyway. How long will I have to run 5k's before my legs stop protesting like this?!?!

lemonstartree · 28/06/2007 20:35

today i treated myself to some proper runing kit - new 3/4 length trousers and top (pink! ) and some new trainers..really needed these as my old ones are fallling to bits. I promised myself If I kept rubbing for 6 months I would get some decent stuff....

Popsycal, your time sounds really good, my goal for my 5k in September is

lemonstartree · 28/06/2007 20:38

Duchess

EVERY time I run its pretty rough for the first 1k or so, then i settle in and its ok....

probably I dont stretch enough??

TheDuchessOfNorks · 28/06/2007 21:06

I take care to stretch out and rotate joints and all - I think it's just the shock of having put my lardy legs through 5k of running. I guess as I get stronger I'll get less ache.

I'm in the South - Sussex. But if you're looking for someone to do the Great South Run, it's no, no and no again! Have you SEEN those hills

Wallace · 28/06/2007 22:08

Had a really crap run tonight. I have had a rotten cold, and we are in the middle of moving house. I reallyt struggled, my legs were barely moving. I walked after 3 mins I thought it best not to do myself any damage because I have my 5k on Sunday.

glitterfairy · 28/06/2007 22:10

Duchess your legs will ache less the more running you get under your belt. Mine was my knees at first, nightmare but now they are much better.

I have had to slow down running this week but have done other things instead. Part of me feels that doing other things helps anyway as it builds muscles and endurance in a different way altogether. Tomorrow is pilates day!

Foxey · 29/06/2007 09:18

I am planning on only doing one run this weekend which means I have only run twice this week (is that enough to prepare for 5k?). I really want to do it in about 35 - but need to get moving if I have any chance, and now I'm not sure if thats realistic after poor run mid week. I am in Kent (just outside London and am running the RFL at Blackheath (near my work).

mustrunmore · 29/06/2007 11:21

I have that cold too Havent run for days. I'm sooo annoyed because MrLodger bought me my ipod, I spent ages choosing and loading, then have been too crap to use it Its a shuffle though, so no trainer thingy. Oh well. I'm happy enough.

Rodeo · 29/06/2007 12:15

Hi!
Thanks Duchess and Foxy for your replies Got cajoled into it by a group of mum's at ds's school! I do really like the company and the feeling I've done something, went running last night and just wanted to walk! My ankles are a bit sore from Tues so I'll put it down to that!
Good luck to everyone doing their runs this weekend
Hope you get over your colds Mustrun & Wallace!
Duchess - LOL at your response to Great South Run

Rodeo · 29/06/2007 12:17

Foxey, I've only been doing twice a week, seemed fine for me I'm amazed I managed 31 mins TBH, still basking in smugness!

popsycal · 29/06/2007 13:54

I am going to do an exact 5K tonight if I get the chance (swimming straight after school run then have to pick up car from garage, eat, etc...)
I am ignoring the online training plan now and am making it up - apart from the last week when I will follow it to ease off.

Foxey · 29/06/2007 14:23

Rodeo I think you've done great doing it in that time. I am defo going to measure the distance again in the car and run it. Am planning on a couple glasses of wine tonight though so might have to wait till Sunday.
