Anyone else have this awful virus?

Day 3 and I'm fucked! I have never experienced a sore throat like this. It's agony.

Dr prescribed naproxen and co-codimol. Can't take the naproxen yet as it's bid and I have already taken ibruprofen.

Not slept at all for 48 hours as my throat is too painful. Had to write a note for the Dr as I couldn't talk to explain symptoms.

He said there is a particular nasty virus that is poleaxing people for up to two weeks . I can't afford to take that time off work.

What I'm really after is self help for my throat - it is AGONY and I am besides myself. If I cough it feels like layers of skin being ripped from my throat. Strangely I don't think my tonsils are affected as it's more central roof of mouth.

The most impressive nasal drop you've ever seen.

He didn't say the f word though - just rest and fluids. Pain relief etc.

Anyone want to join my pity party?

I was ill before Christmas, recovered slightly then ill over New Year. Carried on working but feeling tired, gave up smoking and had sore gums then started with a hacking dry cough, bad stomach which I still have, twitching eye, vile taste in my mouth mainly with drinks, food tasted OK

Went to the doctors and my chest is clear. I'm still coughing but it's productive and my stomach has started again with bad pain when I need to run to the loo.

I didn't realise it was the same virus until reading this tonight.

Taste has come back normal now. Hope everyone else is on the mend.

UrsulaPandress · 16/02/2018 22:54

I'm quite shocked it's come back. I started on NewYears Day. Took 4weeks to recover, had a couple of weeks of feeling relatively ok then the wheezing rattling chest came back. And the squits. And the coughing. Oh the coughing. I thought my ribs had recovered.

treedragon · 17/02/2018 08:45

Are people finding this virus is making the feel really down if not depressed and utterly miserable?

treedragon · 17/02/2018 09:06

Even after nearly entering week 6 I have a dry, hacking prickly cough.

mamarach26 · 17/02/2018 09:37

Everyone has it in my house. Me, DP and the boys. I started with it at Christmas and I still have it. Thought I was all good again till I woke up last week with the throat from hell.
Been sick so many times because of the cough! It’s relentless and the snot so much of it. And it’s thick. Been to the GP they said it’s viral so gave DS2 a inhaler as he’s making some odd sounds in the night. DS1 has been off nursery all week.
I am sick of being ill and I have honestly forgotten what it’s like to feel normal!!

mamarach26 · 17/02/2018 09:38

Forgot to add, I haven’t had any taste or smell since Christmas. Which is probably a good thing cause I probably stink!

springydaffs · 17/02/2018 10:27

Sorry I keep banging on about this but if you feel it's coming back then beat the bastard into submission with gargling/antiseptic throat spray - even if you have a very slight sore throat, it could be the demon forcing it's way in again.

That said, this vile vile thing didn't start with a sore throat but a sudden irritating and insistent dry cough for a few days. THEN the sore throat from hell and hades.

Still not right, week 7/8?, but certainly not complaining. I've been seriously thinking of going to the GP for anti depressants but reading some of these posts maybe it's a symptom..

God bless us all Flowers

treedragon · 17/02/2018 11:16

I’m still having issues with intermittent low level aching especially in the upper back and arms, wrists sometimes hands.

End of week five for me.

treedragon · 17/02/2018 11:18

@springdaffs

You must have developed this Christmas time? Would have wrecked your Christmas?

treedragon · 17/02/2018 11:19

I had thoughts last night that I will never feel well ever again. I suspect a lot of us are feeling that?

Lisette40 · 17/02/2018 11:23

springydaffs feeling low is part of it. I went shopping locally this morning and the effort was exhausting. I felt really unfit. I think early nights are the only way. My body is in battery saver mode Grin

I thought, if I ever do feel better, that I'll get really fit treedragon

treedragon · 17/02/2018 11:28

So far I can’t see anyone here that has said they have fully recovered

treedragon · 17/02/2018 11:30

Mine really came on 7 January. But I had felt unwell from about the 3rd but had a nasal infection at the new year point so Im not sure if all of that is part of it.

I’ve been counting from 7 January which is 6 weeks tomorrow.

treedragon · 17/02/2018 11:31

I saw one entry up the thread where a lady said she had been weeping and crying with the endurance of it. It’s a true bastard that won’t shift.

springydaffs · 17/02/2018 11:36

Those who are well bugger off I think. So that's the op - yay, there's hope!

Yes and yes to Christmas treedragon.

I seem to be falling out with key people. Ie strained relationships I usually manage, by and large, but I seem to be incapable of bearing with at the moment. I'm not proud of myself, I'm spilling out all over the place Confused

I feel like I can't cope and darent go out bcs I'll give some tiresome person a mouthful..

treedragon · 17/02/2018 11:44

Have you got your appetite back @springdaffs? Mine is still intermittent. But seems to go along with the intermittent stomach issues.

MigGril · 17/02/2018 11:44

Well I got one day of looking after by DH he seems to have abandoned me to it today. He's say I should get Up, I'm ill why should I get up Confused.

I just want to lie in bed and be ill. Mean man.

SeniorRita · 17/02/2018 15:31

I didn't have a sore throat at all actually.

For those feeling down, try a vit D mouth spray. Lack of vit D can cause low mood and we never get enough of it in the UK anyway, let alone when we are bed bound for weeks. There's one on Amazon, Better You I think it's called.

Vit B12 for energy levels.

VioletCharlotte · 17/02/2018 15:35

SeniorRita thanks for the advice re vitamin D, I think I'll give that a go. I've been feeling so low with this virus and although I'm feeling physically a lot better now, I'm really tearful and down.

treedragon · 17/02/2018 17:44

I had a bit of a search in Facebook by typing in Australian Flu. Came up with several public status updates with people giving an account of this illness. Many report a second and third recurrence and weeks of recovery.

So I am wondering if this is our virus

treedragon · 18/02/2018 11:00

How is everyone today?

parrotonmyshoulder · 18/02/2018 11:16

I’m well enough to go out for a meal. But I’ll be sitting down. Still need to rest after small exertions, like carrying laundry up the stairs or loading the dishwasher. Definitely not back to normal and don’t think I’ll cope with work. Still having to nap in the afternoons. Frequent head/ sinus pains still - on and off and the cough is still ‘productive’ despite finishing antibiotics. Mood low ish but that’s because I’m not doing normal things like exercise (even yoga is way too ambitious and the dog is getting very short walks unless someone else can take him).

user1471550643 · 18/02/2018 11:41

Day 18 . I thought I was getting a bit better. Started doing a bit more with a view to going back to work tomorrow, then overnight I’ve bern coughing loads and have a temperature and upset stomach again .. I’m so fed up .., aargh! Hope everyone else is feeling a bit better

mrsreynolds · 18/02/2018 11:50

My dh - who is never ill! - has been really ill since Thurs
Complained of being really tired Thurs afternoon and as he looked grey I sent him to bed at 7.30pm. He was complaining of feeling sick too
At 2am he threw up (just bile) and has had the runs
He has only just got out of bed since then!
He has been sleeping but fitfully
He has been coughing and squeezing a bit...could this be a flu type virus?

Kikashi · 18/02/2018 11:51

Walked up hill to the small local co-op this morning (about 15 mins each way). There was a queue at the till and I felt a bit panicky as I was out of breath and feeling shaky after the walk - sort of like my adrenaline was up but was having to stand still so my legs/feet felt spongy. My ears also feel very full and won't pop.

However, I managed but it was not pleasurable and my chest is very rattly even 2 hours after the exertion. My appetite is back and I think I'm slowly improving. It will be 2 months since this started next week.

How are you treedragon? Wishing you all better health.
