For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information \link{http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthandsocialcaretopics/FiveADay/FiveADaygeneralinformation/DH_4001494 \here} (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

Aviatrix I am in the same predicament as you re. exercise... we need to think of ways round it...

So far: dried apricots, more dried tropical fruit (pluot - ok, reminded me a bit of prunes), kiwi, banana.

sarz · 19/04/2007 13:07

Back on track today! Raisons, lettuce (2 types), celery, houmous, apple, about to go peel an orange, and done an hour at gym, within which i actually ran on treadmill for 30 mins! then left sweaty bum prints on all the weight machines!

SauerKraut · 19/04/2007 13:15

Self- flagellation-day. Had banana, broccoli, tatties, carrots ( white and orange, does that count as 2?), already beaten yesterday. Later I intend to have coleslaw, lettuce, apple. And a few dried thingies.
Just bought a trailer bike for dd3, so we are all going for a cycle in a minute.

FrannyandZooey · 19/04/2007 13:33

Sauerkraut and sarz, you are very inspiring today

Right can we all think of ways for Avi and Tatties to exercise please?

I know it sounds a bit lame but have you thought of an exercise DVD thingy?

SauerKraut · 19/04/2007 13:40

Skipping? With a rope? Quite good fun and 15 mins does the job.

morningpaper · 19/04/2007 13:43

15 minutes of skipping would probably kill me

I can bounce on my trampoline but have to get off after 2 minutes because I'm worried about having a vaginal prolapse

filthymindedvixen · 19/04/2007 13:44

Oats for breakfast
Green soup for kunch, yoghurt and fresh blueberries, an apple and a banana. And I want CAKE.

exercise? Just lots of power walking.
For 'Power Walking' read 'Idle cow who is permanently late for everything at the moment and so has to scurry very fast ...'

FrannyandZooey · 19/04/2007 13:48

Oh HULA HOOPING is good

at first it really tires you out, 10 mins makes you very sweaty. Then you get good at it and you kind of just stand there twitching your hip now and again

I would just like to point out that I have not had a nestle egg. I don't want rumours.

Am not proud of eating 2 x weightwatchers toffee bars (which are made of sand and crisped cereal, in case you were wondering)

but am delighted to hear that my sultanas count. In fact with an apple and sultanas in my oats, the fresh strawberry and apple juice I have just had in a cafe at my work meeting (o my life is enviable), my banana, and the watercress in my sandwich I am feeling very pleased with myself

probably not enough watercress to count though

Cappuccino · 19/04/2007 14:03

ooh yes exercise dvd that's the ticket

I have two postnatal ones

one is Cindy Crawford on a beach in little knickers and a vest top

and the other is Carol Smillie pushing a buggy round a wet park in an anorak

Tatties · 19/04/2007 14:38

I guess it's my own fault for picking a silly name but I always feel mildly alarmed when someone says they have had tatties for dinner...

Anyway, exercise dvd, hmmm, good idea, but I'm not sure if I would do it.

Believe it or not, I am really liking the idea of hula hooping and skipping. I think ds would LOVE playing with the hula hoop.

FMV - I already do that kind of power walking (and I don't think Franny will be fobbed off with that )

Oh and add a clementine and hummus to my f&v count.

FrannyandZooey · 19/04/2007 14:43

I have eaten mushrooms and asparagus for lunch, plus pear and kiwi which makes 7 so far

no exercise yet except arguing quite vigorously with DS

Cappuccino · 19/04/2007 14:44

what is the actual exercise problem?

is it time/ kids/ hate it/ don't like the shoes/ too damn idle/ bad back?

morningpaper · 19/04/2007 14:59

all of them

my trouble with exercise is that by the time of day when I have "free" time all I can do is have a bath and crawl into bed

or mumsnet

Tatties · 19/04/2007 15:21

Well let's face it, you can find the time to do anything if you really want to... my problem is just not enjoying exercise enough to make time for it.

I used to love skipping at school, but didn't see it as exercise - just playing. And the skill involved in not tripping over the rope appealed to the perfectionist in me
I think in order for me to stick at anything, I need to see it as something I love doing rather than formal exercise.

sarz · 19/04/2007 18:02

every time you go up or down the stairs on the botom step step up and down it really quickly 10 times, very firm bottom in no time!! since my last post i have had another orange and a humzinger, do they count? for dinner i'll be having cod, new potatoes, mange tout, green beans and baby sweetcorn.

FrannyandZooey · 19/04/2007 18:13

I think humzingers may count but reserve the right to sneer a bit

I have had spinach, hummus, chickpeas, avocado, red pepper, cucumber, and beetroot

I reckon that makes 10 at least

OP posts:
lionheart · 19/04/2007 18:40

What is a humzinger?

Apple, banana, grapes, cauli (x2), smoothie (x2), orange juice, so far.

TooTicky · 19/04/2007 18:44

Don't Humzingers contain sulphur dioxide?

Cappuccino · 19/04/2007 18:50

I recently started running on with a 'start from being a complete idle layabout and turn yourself into an athletic marvel' programme

the one thing I enjoy more than anything else is literally running away from the kids at the end of the day

I only go for 25 mins three times a week but I am a convert now (have only been doing it 4 weeks and am very proud I can now run for 4 mins at a time rather than, er, one)

SauerKraut · 19/04/2007 19:27

Sorry, Tatties, but I used to live in Aberdeen (many many moons ago) and tatties will always be tatties, along with bashed neeps.
I just wanted to tell Fillyjonk- I don't know the outcome of your musings but this trailer- bike I have bought is fantastic. We have just come back from our first family bike ride! Dd3 really enjoyed it and gained enough pedalling experience and enthusiasm in one trip to be able to have a go on her "real" bike with some success when we got home.

harpsichordcarrier · 19/04/2007 19:35

ok
apple (mealy bleugh)
2 clementines
strawberries
mushrooms
asparagus (last of)
carrots

FrannyandZooey · 19/04/2007 19:54

Dp only just got home
