For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information \link{http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthandsocialcaretopics/FiveADay/FiveADaygeneralinformation/DH_4001494 \here} (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

Blimey you have all had a tough time. Filthy, that sounds dreadful. God, from what you say, you behaved really well, trying to help. I hope your friend responds to your text soon. What a nightmare
Filly, sorry that you have had a tough time too on your behalf
I am off to check out your thread Galore, its times like these when we need to stick together
Oh yes, asparagus, peas, broadbeans and avacado soup (lets say 5), raspberries (2) and grapes (1)

NotQuiteCockney · 22/04/2007 19:30

Ugh, not the best day for anyone.

I am totally worn out by my stupid culinary efforts. We had sandwiches for tea, thank god.

I'm sorry to hear everyone else has had resoundingly bad days. Ours was ok. I ate far too much raw beetroot, so have spent the afternoon fearing bad intestinal events. So much so that I didn't dare go running, stayed in and did a half-hour tape instead. Which was a nice change really, but as I can't run tomorrow, not very sensible.

yes, it almost makes me feel better that others have been having a crap weekend in a bad moon rising sort of way

I'm now panicking in case anyone at the party was a MNetter! God I'm indiscreet sometimes.)

nappies, sorry, have no words of wisdom, these are new fangled things to me.

Filly, I will also roll up my pacifist sleeves and come and join a pitchfork wielding mob against people who gang up on little boys...

Some people are just sadly partisan against boys...

filthymindedvixen · 22/04/2007 20:04

Can I just say I love you guys...sniff..

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 20:19

Now this is not right

we are 10 / 10 ers and we should be having a fab time in every way. Our shield of fruity goodness should protect us from these nasty non-veg eating types

I have not done brilliantly today - had to go back to P Express with my mate to have a pudding after work, instead of going back to inlaws, and could not be arsed to make a proper dinner but have had:

mixed green salad with green beans, broad beans and tiny peas as well as some leave (from P Express, very nice)
a few salad bits with dinner - beetroot, cuc, carrot, red pepper

as well as the fruity breakfast.

My fruit forcefield also failed today - the party I did was really hard work - nobody's fault I don't think, just that it was in a massive hall with a bouncy castle, lots of bikes etc and I think the mum had envisaged the younger ones sitting in a corner with me singing songs, while in reality they only wanted to play Tricycle Death Match

er... i am v fond of you lot too. btw. (dont tell anyone tho, people might think im soft

re: partisan against boys - my mums one of those! sadly, i think her feeling did quite a bit of damage to my brothers, growing up . she doesnt dare air a view like that round me anymore though! in fact, to be fair, i think she has perhaps mellowed that way, it certainly seems that way. and dp says hes never noticed any animosity. praps im just hyper sensitive to it...hmmm.
anyway, i got to the point a while back where i was going to have to tell her, if she made one more pejorative wise crack about an entire gender (and that of my perfect little babies) that she would have to either keep it to herself or not see them! she f'ing adores them, and being theire Nana tho, and anyway, she mustve felt it from me coz she doesnt do it anymore.
she is v v wonderful in lots of ways btw.

NappiesGalore · 22/04/2007 20:24

LOL at tricycle death match.

OK EVERYBODY - deep breath and.... realx.
the w/end from hell is now OVER

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 20:24

CristinaTheAstonishing · 22/04/2007 20:29

I'd like to ask about the 10 portions of fruit & veg a day. I was reading through a book (Gowri Motha's, the section on nutrition advice in pregnancy) and she says no more than 3 portions of fruit a day. Why do you think this is? She's a bit obsessed with pelvic "mucus" and "congestion" and bananas apparently produce mucus, but gives no other explanation for the other prohibitions (grapes, citrus).

Are there similar restrictions in other diets, aimed at the non-pregnant population and more "mainstream" types? Genuine question as we eat quite a lot of fruit & veg and it's the first time I questioned whether the 5-a-day is somehow maximum 5-a-day. (DH tried a self-prescribed, self-made fruit detox diet and it's the illest 3 days he ever felt, so I can see how overdoing it can be bad, assuming here it was the fruit and not any toxins getting out of his system nonsense.)

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, I only read the OP and it sounded like you'd be knowledgeable about this.

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 20:29

Oh-kayyyyyyyy

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 20:30

oh sorry Cristina cross posts

will read your post properly and try to think

OP posts:
NappiesGalore · 22/04/2007 20:34

blowed if i know, cristina.

i do think is porb better to have more veg than fruit - guts tend to quake a bit with lots of fruit and little else... but re pelvic mucus etc... am ignorant im afraid. ditto on mainstream diet advice. sorry to have been entirely unhelpful!

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 20:37

Right

to my knowledge and I will try back this up with links in a minute, the five a day is absolutely not a maximum. It is the maximum that the govt think they can get away with advising, without scaring everyone. In other countries, on the recommendation of nutritionists, the advice is more like 8 or 9.

I don't know the writer you are talking about, but my first reaction is that she is possibly a bit barking, sorry. Some other people might know more about pelvic congestion The citrus and grapes thing could be acidity?

Personally I have found no long term ill effects from eating lots and lots of fruit (unless you mind pooing more than once a day) and many many positive ones. However the first few days eating in this style, after eating a poorer quality diet, I do find I feel ill. I have a lot of headaches, feel tired, sometimes spotty, sometimes an upset stomach or a lot of unpleasant wind, sometimes depressed. I do think this is the effect of detoxing, or, rather, I assume it must be as I have no other explanation for it.

The positives I have found include better skin, improved mood, better sex drive, weight loss, increased energy, constipation disappears, fewer colds, just an all round improvement in wellbeing.

OP posts:
CristinaTheAstonishing · 22/04/2007 20:41

No, thanks, Nappies. I'm not interested in all that mucus and congestion bit either. Just wondered why she says 3 portions of fruit a day, as it's the only time I've seen it limited, I had assumed the more the better (within reason). Regarding vegetables she recommends the boiled variety (but limitations on tomatoes, potatoes and some others, what's left?) as the raw ones produce too much gas. It's also part of some Ayurvedic stuff but I'm not interested in that aspect either, just wondered if the 3 fruit a day has some more reasoning behind it. I can understand if it's a belief system as a whole, i can take it or leave it (leave it) but it gets mixed up with an attempt at proper justification and I get confused.

FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 20:42

here you go , very interesting article confirms that 5 a day is the minimum you should be aiming for - in Japan the advice is to have seventeen a day wooohooooo!

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 22/04/2007 20:43

although skim read reveals that in Japan they aim for 13 portions of veg and 4 of fruit - interesting

I ate VAST quantities of fruit during pregnancy with no ill effects - it was what I craved

OP posts:
CristinaTheAstonishing · 22/04/2007 20:43

Thanks, F&Z, don't worry about the links. I didn't know the recommendations were higher in other countries. It has probably answered my question, the 3 a day may be an arbitrary limitation.
