For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information \link{http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthandsocialcaretopics/FiveADay/FiveADaygeneralinformation/DH_4001494 \here} (follow the link at the very bottom of the page)

O.K. that's the humzingers explained but what about powerplating or bashed neeps?

Almost a 10. I have done 30 mins on exercise bike as well as proper cycling (to sweetie shop and back ) with hefty toddler.

I am paying attention to the cycling recomendations because I would like something a bit safer than a bike seat for DS.

And I like the whale music.

suzycreamcheese · 19/04/2007 22:48

powerplating??? no idea, but bashed neeps is mashed neeps, sorry, turnip to you lot!

suzycreamcheese · 19/04/2007 22:50

where did whale music come from?....and,er,... have only sniggered at it ....sil has collection of...
listening to bach right now

lionheart · 19/04/2007 22:56

Whale music was the enticement offered at the close of the last thread (boot camp).

It is sporadic.

makkapakka · 19/04/2007 22:57

hello, ace thread - can someone give me an example of how to eat 10 portions in a day - a typical menu-type-thing?

lionheart · 19/04/2007 22:57

Bashed neeps sound wonderful.

suzycreamcheese · 19/04/2007 23:13

lionheart ..they are fabulous try with mashed / baked potato and veggie haggis....and brown sauce ...not gonna blush...love brown sauce...

lionheart · 19/04/2007 23:15

Had me convinced until that last bit ...

suzycreamcheese · 19/04/2007 23:20

ah well...its not optional ...

harpsichordcarrier · 19/04/2007 23:24

makkapakka. I have only been doing this for two days but my plan has been to have as much fruit as possible for breakfast, salad for lunch and as much veg as possible with dinner/main meal. make some soup with different veg. snack on juice and dried fruit.

Greensleeves · 19/04/2007 23:30

I have just made the biggest, tallest, most jammy-creamy-fluffy Victoria sponge cake the world has ever SEEN in my new oven

And this is relevant, because the jam in the middle is made from blackberries from my allotment

lionheart · 19/04/2007 23:36

Oh, that sounds fab. I love blackberries but they are so expensive to buy--I can remember picking them by the bucketload as a child (even the loofahs didn't put me off).

Are they difficult to grow?

(I am very impressed that you actually have a plan HCC).

sibble · 20/04/2007 00:59

am doing well on the fruit veggies stakes but failed so far on the exercise today, flagged the gym as still school holidays here and gave in to DS1's moaning about having to sit bored watching me go nowhere on a bike and treadmill he just doesn't get it does he. Played indoor mini golf instead, which I don't think I can aount as exercise as spent most of the time standing around waiting for Ds to take 50 shots at the hole then decide he was going to count the score of the first attempt. Am planning a swim this afternoon (as long as the pool's not too cold - don't do cold pools). I will go to the gym tomorrow morning though, must make use of my subscription.

er, filly - just started a thread to look for you. am wondering how youre getting on with dd and the nursery run prob? only, i might have a solution for you if you wannit./..

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2007 08:03

Hello Makkapakka! Welcome to the thread (you rude bunch, all ignoring her except HC).Have a look through the thread for lots of ideas on how to eat 10 a day - there is some sensible stuff hidden among the whale songs and all that.

I agree with HC - on a typical day I would have cereal with dried fruit and chopped fruit, salad or some raw veg or beans with lunch, and either plenty of veg to go with dinner, or a veggies soup / stew / curry type meal. Snacks can be fruit as well, if you snack through the day.

I've just had pear, kiwi, grapes, banana (half) and raisins for breakfast. 4 portions.

Had no fruit yet but stuck to my plan yesterday (polishes nails on lapel of pjs) and intend to get going soon.
Bashed neeps are lovely with pepper and a bit of butter.
Fillyjonk, the trailer bike is a half child's bike with a sort of pole at the front which fits just below the seat of mine so it's flexible for corners. Mine is the basic model which was fairly cheap- 286 CHF, is that about 90 quid- so no brakes or gears on the thing itself. I actually think that's better because dd3 can't interfere with my cycling except to help with the pedalling when I need her to- like hills! It's really easy to get used to the extra person at the back, and that's saying something coz I'm a major wuss having never been allowed to ride a bike as a child. You just have to be a bit careful not to go too fast downhill as the extra weight obviously makes it harder to stop. My other 3 kids cycle along in front of us so I can see them, and all has- so far- been lovely. It's worth getting the thing in a bikeshop and taking your own along, then they should fit it for you. The attachment towing thing, which is small, stays on your bike and you can unclip the trailer really easily when you want to ride by yourself.

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2007 08:28

Sauerkraut how old is dd3? We are planning one of these as the next step for ds, but don't yet trust him to actually hold on for the duration of a bike ride He's just turned 4.

OP posts:
SauerKraut · 20/04/2007 08:34

She is a very immature, stroppy and stubborn 5. I thought the same, actually- either that or she would go to sleep and fall off. But since it's so much like being on a real bike for her, both cease to seem even remotely likely- she rose to the occasion beautifully and took her pedalling responsibilities very seriously. I wish I hadn't spent so long pondering and gone for it a couple of years ago. We have a friend here who has had one for his dd since she was 3. She is now 8 and they can still just about manage it!

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2007 08:42

We reckon after the summer he will be able to have a go

I can just see us getting miles out somewhere and him refusing to hold on any more because he is tired

he is used to a seat or pod trailer atm and really enjoys just chilling out on the bike so I guess it would be nice to let him have that relaxation for the time being. He gets plenty of exercise at other times.

OP posts:
SauerKraut · 20/04/2007 08:47

Sounds like he's got it made! I must admit, we will not be going very far for a while yet, but that's mainly because of me, not the kids.

Cappuccino · 20/04/2007 09:42

fillyjonk it is a programme out of a magazine that the man from the running shop gave me which included an application for the London Marathan

I can copy it out for you if you like or go hunting for an online programme that the nice people on the mn running thread found me (I stopped using this since every time I looked it up I found myself on mn instead of running )

am going to venture into town now to try to find something to go with my spinach for tea (have great recipe for italian little chop things - sorry to bring meat into this but it is unavoidable I'm afraid). dh is wanting also to up his intake of fruit and veg during the day but protests that 'nothing is cheaper than a burger from the stall in town'

he is feeling a bit bullied after I watched him in shock as he ate a whole packet of jaffa cake bars at work the other day

never employ your wife, gentlemen, or you can't even have what you want for your dinner

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2007 09:50
