ive been to see nurse practioner today.

a few days ago i had raging thrush so used my usual cream (i used to be plagued and its canestan resisitant) i now get it rarely.

im ttc and over the fertile window we were dtd up to 3 times daily. (not a chore! lol)
anyway a few days ago i noticed a painful swelling at the entrance to my vagina to the left. its got worse. and worse.
went to gp today and nurse could clearly see and feel huge lump - she took swabs and has started me on antibiotics.

what the heck could it be? its not a blocked hair follicle or anything on the outside.
anyone had similar?

Sounds like a Bartholin's cyst.

Myusernamewhichisthis · 31/07/2017 17:43

god i could just cry. the pain!!! had a salt bath. i feel like im sat on a red hot poker. a sharp pointy red hot poker. im also sure its getting larger.

anyone out there had one of these things can tell me how long this will take to go?

Kleptronic · 02/08/2017 10:11

Aw I feel for you. No clue how long it will last, sorry. Hazarding a guess, at least a week for the antibiotics to shrink it - if it bursts, instant relief, but I'm not sure that's a good thing, or the nurse would have lanced it? It being in a gland I expect it's best to let the antibios work and keep the structure intact.

Hope someone who's had one can give you more information.

ShesABloodyLoon · 02/08/2017 10:42

Bartholins cyst.
Mine got about as big as an egg and eventually popped by itself. I went straight home and just squeezed all the stuff out. It had got so chaffed and painful at one point I was going to lance it myself anyway!

It's still there 5 years later but about the size of a marble (though feels bigger being down there) it's completely painless now and if I really wanted it home I could have it lanced.

Ask your GP for a referral to get it lanced. If it returns they can operate to (I think) seal the bit making the liquid that gets trapped inside.

ShesABloodyLoon · 02/08/2017 10:45

Mine took a few weeks to pop unfortunately. And our GP's practice didn't have the option for lancing but referred me to the local hospital. Heat does encourage it to pop so keep up with the hot baths if you can stomach it.

ShesABloodyLoon · 02/08/2017 10:47

Make sure you wear super soft pantyliners or pads all the time for when it does hopefully burst. You don't want to be wadding tissue paper down there in an emergency if you're not close to home. Mine leaked out very slowly but I assume they wouldn't all be the same.

Myusernamewhichisthis · 04/08/2017 16:42

does it have to burst or will it just shrink over time anyway?

its now around the size of a walnut id say and VERY painful still. i rang gp practice today to get results of swabs - no infection present.

theyve told me to complete the course of antibiotics anway (??) and go on monday if no better.

driving is quite literally a pain in the arse. its quite debilitating. im sitting on heat pads.

will this thing need popping do we think or will it just shrink? will i ever be able to have sex again (at mo i cant imagine it!!)

ShesABloodyLoon · 04/08/2017 19:55

I couldn't say whether they shrink or not. Sorry.
Mine just grew and grew over weeks until it started emptying itself. If it's really bad, could you ask insist your GP to lance it? It's very simple (if your surgery does that. Unfortunately ours doesn't)

Politicspanda · 04/08/2017 19:59

I was given antibiotics for mine on Tuesday. By Friday I 'walked' back into the GP and demanded a hospital referral to be lanced. They admitted me and it burst while waiting for the operation. Biggest. Relief. Ever.

Ask to be referred. Beg.

Myusernamewhichisthis · 04/08/2017 20:59

righto.

is lancing it something i could do with a sterile needle myself do you think or is it a bit more than like popping a zit....
this is one that isnt going in sporners corner.

Go to A&E. My friend had a Bartholomew cyst. She was admitted to hospital for a minor surgical procedure under ga via A&E. Has the NHS really deteriorated to the point where things like this aren't resolved. A. Going back 20 years.

Myusernamewhichisthis · 04/08/2017 21:12

not going to a&e on a friday night round here....

and my period is due tomorrow.

OP posts:
Politicspanda · 04/08/2017 21:14

Don't do it yourself, ideally. It will hurt like fuck and even a sterile needle is asking for infection at home.

SleightOfHand · 04/08/2017 21:17

Could you try drawing it out with as hot as you can stand wet flannel.

OhTheRoses · 04/08/2017 22:07

Paracetamol, Nurofen, bag of peas and go tomorrow at about 5.30am. Between the drunks and the normal folk.

itsmetree · 04/08/2017 22:14

I've had two. The first one I was operated on with General Anesthetic. The second I had antibiotics and after 2 days it burst on its own whilst I was asleep and dopedup on painkillers

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 04/08/2017 22:45

Mine burst before I could get a GP appointment - it was the size of a walnut too. The smell when it popped was actually unholy ... truly, truly grim. But by goodness the sweet relief 😛

Myusernamewhichisthis · 05/08/2017 02:46

this is showing NO sgns of popping.

its just there. im going to draw a smiley face on it and christen it soon if it doesnt fuck off!!
im in AGONY with the thing.

cant get to a&e so will try gp monday and see if they can refer me for official popping
i feel so stoupd....im going to be off work due to a cyst. im buggered if im telling them where it is.....

OP posts:
BankWadger · 05/08/2017 04:18

I had one burst by itself and a another shrunk to nothing with antibiotics. Took 3 or 4 days I guess.

Politicspanda · 05/08/2017 08:13

Mine was more painful than childbirth. Horrible thing. I ended up with a few days off work as the antibiotics really knocked me sideways. I got another one a few weeks later and got it lanced at a GUM clinic as soon as it started getting uncomfortable.

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 05/08/2017 08:44

Mine went a really dark colour and the seemed to 'indent' before it popped ... I couldn't squeeze it as it was too painful

Myusernamewhichisthis · 06/08/2017 12:05

my plan is gp tomorrow and beg for referral. its still there. same as before. cant sit, driving is proving problematic.

OP posts:
NipInTheAir · 06/08/2017 12:15

What will you do if GP sends you to A&E? If you get referred Won't you be referred to the same hospital in which A&E is situated.

I really don't understand how you can't get to A&E but can get to a hospital referral.

Myusernamewhichisthis · 06/08/2017 15:30

had differing advice nip - some said go to gp and get referral.

so should i just go to a&e and bypass gp? i havent said i cant get there.
