Experiences of parents with unvaccinated babies/ children

Hi there,

I'm a first time mum who lives in Kent and my DS will be coming up for 8 weeks. After quite a bit of research (and prayer might I add) my husband and I are leaning towards not giving our son any of his vaccinations at all or at least as early as 8 weeks.

I'm interested to specifically hear from parents who have older babies and children that are unvaccinated. What have your experiences been of not vaccinating your child? What has their general health been like? Have you have to isolate them at all/ be careful where you went? Do any attend nursery or school? Do nurserys even take unvaccinated children (excuse my ignorance lol)? Have they been more susceptible to illnesses or caught anything major? If you feel able to share, what were your reasons for not vaccinating?

If anyone is able to share their views on any or all of these questions - would be interested in hearing from you.

Many thanks

I know a child that was not vaccinated for measles. He got measles, aged 5. He was in hospital for weeks, and lost his hearing completely in one ear and partially in the other. Since then, he regularly gets nasty ear infections. He has has a bone attached hearing aid - ie he had to have someone screw a bit of metal in to his skull with a peg that sticks through the skin - and he has to maintain that prosthetic every day. This is my dad.

I know a child that was not vaccinated against meningitis. He got meningitis, aged 3. He was very, very poorly. He recovered. He had major developmental setbacks and had to relearn to walk, speak etc. He still has a noticeable lisp 30 years later.

I knew a child whose mother contracted rubella whilst pregnant. That child is dead.

Op, you won't get much support for deciding not to vaccinate your child on here.

If you are on Facebook, Jackie fletcher has a group called JABS. You will find the people there supportive and informative.

SuperBeagle · 03/06/2017 09:05

I wouldn't allow my child to be around a child I knew wasn't vaccinated, put it that way.

therootoftheroot · 03/06/2017 09:06

my eldest child had a reaction to his first vaccines at weeks.
We were referred to an immunologist who did blood tests and worked out why he was reacting(it was all to do with maternally derived anti bodies)
His vaccine schedule was adjusted and he spent four years going through the process. He is now a teenager and huge and healthy and strapping and had all his teenage boosters with no problem at all.

My youngest child went through the same process and he too is now a strapping healthy teenager.
I wouldn't have left them unvaccinated because diseases like measles can kill.

ElectricDreamers · 03/06/2017 09:07

Might have already been posted but Roald Dahls daughter died of measles before the measles vaccine came out in 68

I'm surprised God didn't tell you that you were being an idiotic, irresponsible and dangerous parent.

Then again He was probably thinking he was going to have his work cut out for him protecting your children and other from your stupidity.

lovemybabies3 · 03/06/2017 09:12

why wouldnt you get your baby vaccinated? its not nice seeing them cry having it done or being abit poorly afterwards (slight temp and groggy) but thats nothing compared to what they would be like if they caught any of the illnesses they were being vaccinated for!

QueenofEsgaroth · 03/06/2017 09:21

Slow news day OP? Just lit the blue touch paper of a stupidity bomb then fucked off for a cup of coffee so you can cut and paste your article submission later? Easy money!

bruffin · 03/06/2017 09:26

not to mention the dramatic decrease in childhood disease happened when vaccination was first introduced at the same time as improved sanitation.
What years would that be?
Measles had the biggest epidemics in the 60s since records started just before the vaccine was introduced late 60s, do you really think sanitation got that much better then.

BrexitSucks · 03/06/2017 09:31

There was an MNer who was a strong anti-vaxxer (Spidermama). So this is the information she felt fine to share on MN on what it's like to have non-vaccinated children.

Her children got measles, were involved in a measles outbreak in their town.
The whole family got publicly villified.
Journos camped on their doorstep.
Feeble voices cried out in the dark for water at all hours.
The kids had high fever and didn't get much out of bed.
How they kept the curtains closed & house dark to cut the risk of damage to sight.
And tiptoed around the house for days.

Gee it sounded so fun. I couldn't wait to sign up for that experience. (sarcasm alert).

The first article that Salty linked to got retracted by Frontiers (not a fussy journal that would retract much) & then turned up in JofTSci. It's open access so easy to find.

The results are indeed astounding. Not that I believe them, for reasons given in the links.

Grin So long as you don't expect your information to come with any pesky facts or evidence.

CowParsleyNettle · 03/06/2017 09:44

Penicillin has saved more lives in a hundred years than prayer did in ten thousand.

Oh no, no one should take it because I had a reaction to it. Penicillin is BAD. I have anecdotal evidence to back it up [links to BS research proving point and not proving any actual science]

CowParsleyNettle · 03/06/2017 09:46

@SaltyMyDear your bullshit is a bigger risk to children than vaccines.

tapdancingmum · 03/06/2017 09:48

DD1 was born in 96 and was due her MMR around the time that Andrew Wakefield was spouting his rubbish. No internet as such in those days so all you had was him and the papers on one side and the dr's on the other. I must admit that I listened to the journalists and didn't have the MMR. She had everything else at the right time. Along comes DD2 and again we didn't have her done for MMR. Within a couple of years the truth had come out and I felt a nit for believing it. Luckily for my children all the other parents had not believed it and had had their children immunised and my two hadn't caught measles, mumps or rubella so couldn't pass it round. When I had come to my senses and asked for it to be done they had to wait until they were in Y7.

I can understand people with children as old as mine wavering over the MMR but I don't get parents not wanting to do it now.

longcat · 03/06/2017 09:53

OP my DC are now 18 and 15. When my eldest was a baby I knew a mum whose child was several vaccine damaged. Like you I read lots of info from both sides of the debate and made an informed choice not to vaccinate my children. I got a few follow up calls from the HV but no major pressure, except when registering with a new GP practice as one of the partners tried to tell me they didn't accept non vaccinated children. PALS soon put him right on the legalities of that position.

Nursery/school no problems. As for health issues, my DS had asthma when he was younger (runs in our family) but grew out of it by the time he was 6. DD has ASD but is physically very healthy.

Now they are older they can decide for themselves whether they want to have any vaccinations and I will support them with whatever they decide.

JassyRadlett · 03/06/2017 09:54

Brexit, even the Journal of Translational Science retracted the article. Quite some hung when a 'study' is judged to be less reliable than conspiracy theories papers abut chemtrails.

CraicMammy · 03/06/2017 09:54

I can tell you about my Dad, he wasn't vaccinated for measles, he caught it, it blinded him.

JassyRadlett · 03/06/2017 09:54

Some hung? Something!

Cakescakescakes · 03/06/2017 09:55

There is also no way I could be friends with an anti vaxxer either so be prepared to lose the respect of friends and family over it.

WappersReturns · 03/06/2017 09:56

If their definition of informative is mutual back slapping and appreciation of each others idiocy eh Grin

BrexitSucks · 03/06/2017 09:58

Thanks for that info, Jassy.

thelastdayinmay · 03/06/2017 09:58

Mrs Fletcher's son was severely damaged by vaccines Jassy

She's a kind, sensible and loving woman. Really, she is. I know her. I'm proud to know her.

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 03/06/2017 10:02

Ok so you don't have to vaccinate your kids, that's your right. But if you choose to be so selfish leave your child unvaccinated please keep them away from anyone who is immuno-compromised, going through chemo, cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, has a chronic illness that leaves them vulnerable to infection. Because it's their right not to be put at risk by people so ridiculously gullible they choose not to vaccinate their kids. HTH.

Oh and my boys have autism, apparently so does DD (waiting for formal assessment), and it's got absolutely hee haw to do with vaccinations and everything to do with that's who they are. I'd much rather have kids with autism than kids in the ground because I chose not to protect them from potentially fatal yet easily avoidable diseases.

BrexitSucks · 03/06/2017 10:03

Pro Jackie Fletcher MN thread here.

FuzzyPillow · 03/06/2017 10:04

My DC isn't vaccinated on the advice of his Immunologist.

Having already had a life threatening infection which resulted in Multi System Organ Failure, Encephalitis, being put on the Emergency Organ Transplant Register at 7 days old, being told DC would probably die before getting the transplant but that actually it might be a good thing because if he lived he would be quadriplegic and a 'vegetable'.......

I would say, if you don't want ^ that experience then FUCKING VACCINATE YOUR CHILD!
