For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and more detailed information here

Jackaroo, I presume they do, as dried fruits count, but they are probably not the best way of getting your portions. I just allow it to count for 1 portion. I usually have museli or porridge, with fruit on it if I can

Greensleeves · 07/03/2007 16:34

Yes, raw oats as in the porridge oats we make the dss porridge with, served uncooked

Overrun · 07/03/2007 17:10

ARgh, I was being very dense, I know what you mean now, I sometimes have them uncooked with grape nuts on top, very tasty.
I have not really eaten much today, just some mushrooms and tomatoes with my sausages this lunchtime.
Will try and make up some lost ground with my dinner. Dh out tonight working to make up the lost time yesterday, so will struggle on

alittlebitshy · 07/03/2007 17:24

feeling ever so slightly better today which makes me realise how rough i was feeling yesterday
deaf in one ear though which is not fun).

had some cuc/toms in my sarnie - i reckon that is one portion together?
then:
pear
banana
2 satsumas

now am having a smoothie (innocent superfoods one dontchaknow) - which says it is 2 portions, and it is v v v mega high in vit c which my body clearly nees today.

don't think yoghurt covered raisins will count and i certainly doubt the fruit bearinf merits of the tube of fruit pastilles i have sitting here for later (at work, my token evening of work a week)

will try for some more fruit when i get home, but today is clearly a veggie lacking day - i don't "do" a proper meal on my work night so....

FrannyandZooey · 07/03/2007 18:09

Jackaroo welcome

You will find portions sizes of everything in the first post on this thread, and it does include dried fruit (I think you'd maybe have to eat a lot of blueberry cereal to make one portion though Overrun? )

Another vegetable lover, eh? I am getting quite ashamed of myself next to all you greens eating types...

Overrun · 07/03/2007 19:47

filthymindedvixen · 07/03/2007 20:00

fillyjonk - can't you construct a new ceiling with knitting, recycled paper and organic spit in a sort of daub and wattle stylee, thereby freeing up cash for fab fruit trees and years of happy, self-grown fruit consumption smugness?

Snort, come on, no choice really is there?

Overrun · 07/03/2007 20:01

Sorry to hear about your ceiling Filly. I can ask around and see if I know any one who can recommend some one

FrannyandZooey · 07/03/2007 20:02

Filly fix your ceiling

Fillyjonk · 08/03/2007 07:38

oh if you could that would be great or

part of the reason this has got soooo bad is that we have been trying to find a deent builder for a while. oh and we are irrespnsible eegits

Overrun · 08/03/2007 08:44

Morning, I will ask around Filly, but will have to thread your other thread properly first to see what the problem is.
So far I have had museli and a banana and a apple.
Mum is having the boys this morning, so I might go for a swim, but the problem as ever is, that there is shopping that needs doing etc etc

Jackaroo · 08/03/2007 10:53

Ah yes, thanks for that, those links are very useful!

Morning Overrun - I finally managed 2 satsumas and 4 portions of veggies yesterday, but still not good! I did lots of walking though..........

Filly, nice to meet you, and very sorry about your ceiling - sounds scary!

Overrun · 08/03/2007 13:19

I have now had 3 satsumas and a salad for lunch. But my god, I bought one of those salads that you pick and mix from Morrisons, and it was the most disgusting thing. It had this really metallic chemically taste to it. YUK YUK

Fillyjonk · 08/03/2007 18:29

o/r you know about chlorine + salad, yes? that prewashed salad is washed in chlorine to kill bugs?

Overrun · 08/03/2007 19:04

God, that explains it then, it really was disgusting. I think it was all the processed dresssings in the coleslaw and pasta salad bits that tasted really yukky as well. Never again.
I have snacked on a big raw carrot and 2 more clementines this afternoon, and plan to have some more veg with my liver dish which I am cooking tonight. Its an Italian dish, which has been recommended by another mumsnetter, so fingers crossed.

Overrun · 08/03/2007 19:05

Filly, can you direct me to your ceiling thread, I tried to search for it with no success

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2007 10:51

Filly I am also concerned about your ceiling

OP posts:
Overrun · 10/03/2007 00:04

Hello, a late post before I go to bed.
During the afternoon I had some more clementines. But they vary so much, the sweet ones are deliscious, but you have to grit your teeth through the tart ones
For dinner, had my favourite beetroot dish (with Anchovies and garlic), also leeks with a caper and shallot dressing. Another winner from the Riverford recipe collection. I can't rate that place enough. I also had a green sald too.
So not too bad on the portion front. Oh yes, and pineapple. ds1 tried some too although he then decided that he didn't like it
Where is every one?

Skribble · 10/03/2007 00:11

Can I ask all you fruit and veggers where do you find it works out best to buy all your fruit and veg?

I always assumed the supermarket was cheapest but probably not, should I try the veg stall at the local market, or does will he just have loads of out of season stuff shipped from all over the world too? Or should I make more of an effort to find a ood greengrocer, they are a bit thin on the ground here.

The other day I saw brambles from mexico FGS!

Fillyjonk · 10/03/2007 07:45

i have had enough of riverford, really, their veg doesn't last. farmers market instead I think (prices are similar). am toying with a smallish box perhaps though and topping up at the market on sunday.

Fillyjonk · 10/03/2007 07:47

skribble if you're not fussed on organic (I wasn't pre kids)-fruit/veg stall at the regular market is usually much cheaper and I think more likely to be local?

Overrun · 10/03/2007 12:45

Filly, thats interesting, I can't sing Riverfords praises highly enough. I find their veg lasts well, and we have a large box too. Mind you, fresh veg isn't supposed to last that well is it?
Anyway, i have had museli and a banana so far. But am just about to sit down and eat a carrot and jeruselem artichoke soup (so a good few portions there in a big bowl, I should have thought0
I use a farmers shop and my box Scribble, as like you we don't have many good green grocers around any more

FrannyandZooey · 10/03/2007 17:16

Sorry I have not been around much, I have been feeling uninspired (and slightly coldy)
