Hi
I'd be glad of any advice or personal experiences here. I am around 4 stone overweight, so definitely obese. Most of it is on my stomach though, which now looks like I'm 11 months pregnant with triplets. I'm in my 50s so this is not a possibility. It's very painful and I am short of breath when I walk etc.

I've put on a lot of weight in a short period - 10lbs in 2 months.

Six months ago I was bodyboarding in the sea, walking every day and doing an exercise class every week. Now it's a struggle to do anything.

I'm having bloods done on Friday but any ideas / comments? Am I just unlucky to pile it all on in one place?

Good luck tomorrow Twitterqueen.

Nospringflower · 09/03/2017 22:16

Hope all goes well with the tests tomorrow.

Wallywobbles · 09/03/2017 22:29

How about logging what you are really eating with MyFitnessPal and then you might have an idea if you are really overeating or something else is going on. 3500 calories over is a pound in weight I think.

Wallywobbles · 09/03/2017 22:29

Sorry didn't read far enough. Good luck.

Iamastonished · 09/03/2017 22:32

Oh no. I hope it is easily resolved Flowers

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 09/03/2017 22:34

I was going to suggest you get checked around the pelvic area as I believe ovarian cancer can present like this.

I see though that the hospital are on it for you. I hope it all goes ok OP.

lisalisa · 09/03/2017 22:40

Well I'm coming in to say it isn't normal not being able to walk far or exercise at that weight. I am your height and weigh 15 stone and it's round my middle too and I still do Zumba and walk a lot. Get to your gp x

lisalisa · 09/03/2017 22:41

Just read whole thread . Oh Twitter I hope you're ok . Try not to worry too much x

mnbvcxzl · 09/03/2017 22:45

Thoughts with you. It did sound odd from the start, hope you get the treatment you need ASAP.

TheFurryMenace · 10/03/2017 07:27

What a shock for you OP, hope you have support around you. My mum had a very distended tummy despite being rake thin. Dr told her it was just part of growing older (she was late 40s/early 50s), she was however diagnosed with a stomach ulcer a few months later. The tummy got worse, she was so down about it I encouraged her to go back to GP as it did indeed look odd (she looked pregnant). She was rushed to hospital, turned out to be a massive ovarian cyst (benign), 8lb! This had been the cause of her breathlessness, and 'ulcer' as pushing up against her stomach!

I hope you have someone with you, it must be very frightening. Let us know how you get on. Take care Flowers

TMIFriday · 10/03/2017 13:44

How are you doing OP?

Purplebluebird · 10/03/2017 17:30

My mum also had an ovarian cyst actually, she did look quite pregnant actually. I hope you will be ok.

RuncibleSp00n · 10/03/2017 18:13

A friend of mine had something very similar. She'd always been apple-shaped and overweight, so when her tummy grew very large she didn't think it odd. Eventually she felt unwell and they discovered a huge (basketball-sized) ovarian cyst and litres of fluid in her abdomen. Once it was all whipped-out she made a full and quick recovery.

I really hope this is what your situation turns out like, OP. You must feel very worried but hopefully all will be sorted soon Flowers

Finally on a ward and about 7 litres lighter than I was this am. No news on the beast (aka 'mass') because I haven't had a scan yet. Drain still in - I guess it will be overnight now. All a bit stressy and weird. I don't feel ill therefore I cannot be ill. Except I might be.

Glad your getting treated Twitter, hope you get some sleep tonight. Scan tomorrow? Hope it goes ok.

KindDogsTail · 10/03/2017 22:13

As others have said, the first thing would be to get very thoroughly checked for everything mentioned.

Stress can cause weight gain too, I think not just by making you hungrier but in and of itself. So if you have been very upset by the loss of your dog (for which I am so sorry Flowers), perhaps that has caused more stress for you. Do you think you need any counselling for bereavement, or for other issues this great loss has brought up?

Once everything else has been ruled out, you might like to read The Blood Sugar Diet by Michael Mosely which talks about the effects of certain foods on weight specifically around the middle. Though he suggests an extreme reduction of calories for one of the three options, the other options promote a more gradual approach.

The important part to take in though is the sort of food eaten: basically starchy carbohydrates and sugar in all its forms are replaced with fibrous and leafy vegetables, some alternative less starchy grains and lower sugar fruits eaten together with protein and adequate healthy fats.
This is generally called the Mediterranean diet.

It makes a dramatic difference, and though difficult at first, after getting used to eating that way, this densely nutritious food is so much more satisfying that the old way of eating looses its appeal. Oddly the fewer calories seem like a lot more than the same calories of other food would.

It can be used to stop pre-diabetes and diabetes.

PollyBanana · 10/03/2017 22:18

Kind dogs - maybe read the thread?

BigGreenOlives · 10/03/2017 22:20

@Kinddogstail Read the OP's updates

@TwitterQueen So pleased that you are being looked after. 7l = 7kg so you're over a stone lighter than you were 2 days ago. I hope you sleep well tonight.
