Where to arrange a circumcision

dawnharvey68 · 25/02/2007 21:49

If we have a boy, we plan on having him circumcised. But it's proving exceedingly difficult finding someone to do it where we live.
My husband was born in the USA where pretty much all boys are circumcised routinely before they leave the hospital and it seems strange here that it is so difficult to arrange such a simple thing.
I'd be interested to hear if others found it as difficult.
It seems quite a common problem in the UK, finding someone who will perform a newborn circumcision, so I a support group for those trying to sort it out:
health.groups.yahoo.com/group/babycircuk/
All I have been able to find so far is that if you are in the south of England/London area, you are particularly well served:
Luton: www.circumcision-agency.com/
London: www.circumcisions.co.uk/
London: www.theportlandhospital.com/
London: www.samedaydoctor.co.uk/links.aspx
Reading: www.circumcision-uk.com/
UK Mohels: www.lubavitchuk.com/services/religious/mohellist.shtml
www.mohel-circumcision.co.uk/
www.londoncircumcision.co.uk/
plus probably others that would appear on a search.
Does anyone know of anyone else that will perform them?

Thankfully, levels of genital mutilation, oops, I meant circumcision, are dropping in North America.

I'm from there myself.

I'm glad to see this barbaric practice declining.

hercules1 · 25/02/2007 21:51

That's because it's generally frowned upon and seen as pretty barbaric here.

fireflyfairy2 · 25/02/2007 21:51

We don't like mutilating our children in the name of faith.

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 21:52

C'mon, MNetters, you know how popular a topic this is here .

Nikki76 · 25/02/2007 21:53

Hi

I'm Muslim and we had DS circumscised by a Muslim doctor in Bimingham - he was excellent but we had a hard time finding him - had to go on recommendations. We rang private healthcare companies but they don't do it until the child is a lot older, which is sooo much more painful so didn't persue that option.

Have you had your DS circum yet or still looking for a good doctor?

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 21:54

I'm making a big assumption that the OP is doing this for cosmetic reasons, Nikki.

dawnharvey68 · 25/02/2007 21:58

No, still a few weeks to go, not due until end of March.
There seems to be very limited options that I know of in Scotland.
I have numbers for a mohel in Glasgow, and for Jewish and Islamic centres in the city next to me, so I will call and find out.
Hopefully I can find someone nearby to do it.
Knowing it is difficult to arrange here, I just wanted to get it sorted in good time.

I don't suppost anyone has actually read in the newspapers that circumscision is acutally being seen as a good way to reduce the spread of HIV in Africa and its generally a cleaner way of doing things?

I have not started this up as a topic and I've kept my opinions to myself unless people (usually other Muslims) have asked about it and I really don't appreciate comments about people mutilating their children in the name of faith because that is such an unfair and unjust comment to make - are you insinuating that I've mutilated my son whom I love very much??!!! Have you actually read anything about why its done? Maybe you should do that and then come back and if you still have any questions, I'll answer them

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 22:02

Another good way to stop HIV transmission is to limit the number of partners you have and use condoms.

'its generally a cleaner way of doing things? '

I accept this is part of some peoples' faith, a very instrinsic part.

But Nikki, would you do this to your child if it were NOT a part of your faith, for purely cosmetic reasons?

fireflyfairy2 · 25/02/2007 22:02

It reduces the spread of HIV in africa...

So does protected sex.

fireflyfairy2 · 25/02/2007 22:03

Ah expat got there before me.

Tatties · 25/02/2007 22:04

Condoms would reduce the spread of HIV in Africa

Tatties · 25/02/2007 22:04

You both got there before me!

Skyler · 25/02/2007 22:05

To the OP - What are your reasons??

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 22:05

Cosmetic surgery for babies.

Yep, that could be a reason why it's not so popular here.

Nikki76 · 25/02/2007 22:09

No, I wouldn't do it for purely cosmetic reasons.

I hate getting into rows like this, howevever, I am sure you can see why I got mad as I didn't like the comment about mutilating children in the name of faith - really upset me

I had a lot of grief over my family about it and it made it soooo hard for me. However, I read all about it before agreeing to do it and DS was all numbed so didn't feel any pain from it and was well medicated afterwards.

fireflyfairy2 · 25/02/2007 22:12

I never meant to upset you so please accept my apologies.

But there are lots of ways to reduce the spread of disease rather than hurting an innocent child. Medical reasons are different IMO.

Anyway, I won't post on this topic again as I disagree with circumcision for non medical reasons & I don't want to upset you anymore.

SenoraPostrophe · 25/02/2007 22:12

why did you do it then Nikki?

you don't really buy the aids/cleaner argument do you?

and don't just say because of faith, because I bet there are bits of muslim teaching you don't adhere to.

just wondering.

Nikki76 · 25/02/2007 22:13

Agree to disagree then

I saw that report, Oops. They said the baby's death was unconnected with the circumcision but it seems very strange to me that the poor child had a heart attack just 15minutes later.

Apparently, even some Jewish groups are now shunning circumsion, which I'm pleased to hear as my ds is married to a Jewish girl.

Nikki76 · 25/02/2007 22:36

Senora

It was because of faith though - as well as the Koran, Muslims follow the Sunnah - the sayings of the Prophet Mohammed. You cannot follow one and not the other, and cicumscision is required as part of the Sunnah. Our religion also requires we don't drink or eat pork and the reasons for this are not 100% clear cut i.e if you eat this x,y z will happen but that is why it is a faith. I accept the word of a greater being out there than myself and have chosen to bring my child up in this faith, this word. I know its really hard for some people to understand. Yes, there are parts I don't follow but thats the same in any religion - loads of people are 'Christian' who celebrate Xmas and Easter but don't follow anything else the religion prescribes....

Try www.islam.net to find out more info about reasons behind it if you want to...
