Where to arrange a circumcision

dawnharvey68 · 25/02/2007 21:49

If we have a boy, we plan on having him circumcised. But it's proving exceedingly difficult finding someone to do it where we live.
My husband was born in the USA where pretty much all boys are circumcised routinely before they leave the hospital and it seems strange here that it is so difficult to arrange such a simple thing.
I'd be interested to hear if others found it as difficult.
It seems quite a common problem in the UK, finding someone who will perform a newborn circumcision, so I a support group for those trying to sort it out:
health.groups.yahoo.com/group/babycircuk/
All I have been able to find so far is that if you are in the south of England/London area, you are particularly well served:
Luton: www.circumcision-agency.com/
London: www.circumcisions.co.uk/
London: www.theportlandhospital.com/
London: www.samedaydoctor.co.uk/links.aspx
Reading: www.circumcision-uk.com/
UK Mohels: www.lubavitchuk.com/services/religious/mohellist.shtml
www.mohel-circumcision.co.uk/
www.londoncircumcision.co.uk/
plus probably others that would appear on a search.
Does anyone know of anyone else that will perform them?

Faith

AllBuggiedOut · 25/02/2007 23:38

I think one of the reasons the debate was opened by your op, dh68, was that you referred to circumcision as "such a simple thing" which, it clearly is not!

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 23:39

Yes, this is such a strange place. Imagine newborn genital mutilation for cosmetic reasons not being simple to sort out. What a backwards place!

Those crazy Scots! They just don't know what's good for their willies.

SaucyMoo · 25/02/2007 23:39

Lol, do people really have their sons circumcised just because their dads are?

We did it cos of faith, it wasnt even an issue, and like someone else said, i had no idea it was so controversial...didnt really think twice about it.

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 23:41

Yes, Saucy, they really and truly do.

In the US, this is one of the most common reasons.

Reasons of faith I see as a different matter entirely.

But just because Dad is?

Sorry, but I think anyone who performs it for cosmetic reasons is completely unethical.

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 23:42

on a newborn, that is.

Agree expat. I think it shouldn't be available for cosmetic reasons. And I expect in a few years it won't be. In my previous life I advised doctors about ethical and legal issues in medicine, and it was apparent that there was a lot more questining of how to justify the removal of healthy tissue for no health benefit (and arguable significant harm)!

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 23:45

It's becoming less and less common, oops, and levels have dropped below 50%. Let's hope that trend continues.

I mean, yeah, circumcision is going so going to help you avoid STD transmission when you're going around screwing people bareback.

Duh.

dawnharvey68 · 25/02/2007 23:47

I do not intend to defend my reasons here, but they are for health and hygiene, not cosmetic.
Yes, I thought I would publicise the places I had found so far in case they help other mums.
In terms of surgery, yes it IS one of the simplest procedures, whether or not you agree with it.
I find the vitriol and lack of respect here upsetting and disappointing. I intend to breastfeed, but wouldn't dream of hijacking a bottle feeding thread and telling everyone there what horrible mothers they are for doing something I wouldn't choose to do, whatever their reasons.

OP posts:
AllBuggiedOut · 25/02/2007 23:49

No, but you might say something you thought the mother was bottle feeding because of misinformation.

SaucyMoo · 25/02/2007 23:49

You do realise that there are over 1 billion muslims in the world and millions of jews, and im sure majority do get their sons circumcised and always will, so hardly a dying practice

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 23:51

The difference is that bottle feeding isn't mutilating a healthy part of a baby's body.

Health and hygeine = cosmetic.

Sorry, but this is a public forum. When you throw advertisements out there for private clinics to perform genital mutilation on non-consenting infants, you can't expect people just sit back and applaud.

fireflyfairy2 · 25/02/2007 23:51

If you didn't intend to defend your reasons here, then why come on & start a thread on the subject?

Anyway, I left this thread ages ago

dawnharvey68 · 25/02/2007 23:51

No, but you might say something you thought the mother was bottle feeding because of misinformation.

No I wouldn't. I would respect their decision and not try to make them feel bad.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 23:52

I don't think anyone's disputing that, Saucy. Faith based grounds are just that.

Cosmetic reasons are another.

fireflyfairy2 · 25/02/2007 23:52

Also, must I add. It is common in some cultures to mutilate a babies ears, get them peirced when they are days old... you will always find people who disagree with it... circumcision is the same.

SherlockLGJ · 25/02/2007 23:53

Anyone got the number for Johnnie ?

dawnharvey68 · 25/02/2007 23:54

If you didn't intend to defend your reasons here, then why come on & start a thread on the subject?

I didn't start a thread to DEBATE the option. You and others chose to do that.

I chose to start a RESOURCE thread for those WHO HAD ALREADY DECIDED TO DO IT.

Unfortunately others piled in to slag off anyone who has made the decision.

No, actually, you started a thread to advertise clinics to carry out circumcision.

Do you own one of these perhaps? Manage one? Get commission for advertising them?

Anyway, the problem will be solved if you have a baby girl

Dawn dont worry luv, its true, people will always disagree with a lot of things, specially on forums. Im sure the info you gave will be useful for anybody who needs it.

expatinscotland · 25/02/2007 23:56

FF2, you are here to respect and support genital mutilation for cosmetic reasons because the OP wants you to.

Okay ?
