I had a fit last night

My DP was woken up last night by me "having a fit" - me eyes were open and vacant, I was completely unresponsive and shaking violently.

I hope this isn't epilepsy etc. Thankfully I already have a GP appointment booked for this afternoon.

Sorry to hear you've had a fit. How did your GP visit go? I had a fit in February, totally out of the blue, nothing before or since. They kept me in hospital for a night, did lots of tests and investigations - CT scan, MRI, EEG etc (some of those later on as an outpatient) and am now on a low dose epilepsy medication as a precaution. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to drive until I've been seizure free for a year. Roll on February!

I feel like my legs and arms have been accosted by a baseball bat, they are so sore. Neck is stiff too.

Apparently the fit lasted around five mins, so my DP didn't think to call an ambulance.

GP was concerned, if non-plussed, offered no referral, no medication, no evaluation. Simply - see if I have another.

Am quite concerned and scared. Have told OH to ring either NHS Direct or 999 if I have a second.

Very, very scared.

How old are you? Im shocked that
A. your Dp didnt call for medical help - at least 111
B. your GP didnt know what to do!

Tbh you should have a head CT.

I had a fit about four weeks ago, I was in the middle of a supermarket.

They called an ambulance, I was taken to hospital I had an ecg and blood tests and all sorts.

Ive got to see a neurologist soon.

I'd see a different dr, and you are going to be sore for the next couple of days.

Also no driving either.

my husband had a fit - complete one off, he was away from home at the time, was taken to hospital.
lots of advice around epilepsy and discharged same day.
Our GP referred him onto neuro unit - he had a brain tumour - wouldn't have known unless he had had that fit.

Removed quickly and 10 yrs on its a dim memory thankfully.
Get checked out.

Hopebyoure doing ok today op. Your gp is wrong not to refer you on for further management. If you Google "first seizure guidelines nice" you can look at the guidelines for the management of a first seizure. You should be referred to a specialist to have investigations to see what's going on. Please go back and see another gp and insist on follow up.

I'd also say if you have another seizure i'd tell your dh to call an ambulance. You don't have any diagnosis so not inappropriate to seek help immediately. He should also time it to see how long it last and if he can do it safely and you're happy for him to, him videoing it might be helpful to show the Drs to help.

OP sorry yes I agree with PP. DM's partner had a one-off fit and was taken to A&E and they found a brain tumour

That fit saved his life.

I don't want to scare you but it needs further investigation IMO

Good grief, how scary. Please get a referral for a first seizure clinic. You need a scan. I'm really surprised your GP didn't refer you (I am one) as this is standard guidelines.

I'm 38, the stories of brain tumours are scary, but from reading neurologists and neurosurgeons biographies I'm aware this is one way they manifest.

Truth be told, I'm inclined not to wait for a potential second seizure and go up to A&E, or would this be inappropriate?

I think going to A&E is appropriate

I 'd o b ack to the GP and ask to be referred to neurology .
If you go to A&E now while you're showing no symptoms they can't really do anything .

I do sympathise ,I'm having tests myself for similar . Do you remember anything of your seizure ?

I would just go up to a&e if you are sitting frightened.

I went up the other week for headaches and vision issues and was kept in for 3 nights. Had head MRI scan whilst in there and got results. Thankfully all was normal.

In some ways the GP is right, anyone is capable of having a seizure at any time and it never happen again. However it should be checked out as it could be a sign that something else is wrong.
You should definitely see another GP or 999 if it happens again.
It would also affect your ability to drive, so that needs investigating.
I speak only as someone who works with people with epilepsy but I'm not a HCP.

Anyone can have a seizure and it may be nothing BUT it could be something. Not only am I a GP but my husband had a seizure in 1999 and was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Sadly he is no longer here. Not that an earlier diagnosis would have made any difference but you need to find out

I'm also a GP. I very rarely disagree with what posters have been told by their own doctors, as there may be context we don't know.

On this occasion, though, I'm going to say straight out that your GP is wrong. You need a referral to a first fit clinic, as a PP says. It is true that anyone can have a fit and there is a good chance that there will not be any underlying problem, but you need conditions like epilepsy ruled out. And you must not drive till you have been investigated - it is against the law and your insurance won't cover you - sorry.

Don't go to A+E.

Scary as this is, it's not an accident and not an emergency.

You should be referred routinely to a first seizure clinic as PP have said.

You may have a one off seizure and never again, your may go on to develop epilepsy, or there may be another cause to this - either way do NOT DRIVE until you are investigated. Your insurance will not be valid if you were involved in an accident after you have had a seizure.

Please be persistent and don't let yourself be sent away. I had a seizure last July and woke up in intensive care to be told I had a brain tumour. I was 28. Most people that get diagnosed with BT's are diagnosed through being admitted to A&E following a seizure.

It's most probably not a BT but you need an MRI or CT to rule it out. In hindsight, I was having mini-night seizures in the run up to my big one and ended up having what's called a status epilepticus the night I got admitted. If my OH hadn't woken up while I was fitting, I would have died in my bed. though he did go and get himself a glass of water to assess the situation before calling 999 but I'll blame that on him being half asleep

OP this is a link to the NICE guidance that all adults with a suspected seizure should see a specialist within 2 weeks. Quote this to your GP.

As well as not driving until you have seen a specialist, please don't do anything else that would be dangerous if you suddenly had a fit. So don't have a bath if you are alone in the house and keep the door open even if DH is home. And don't go charging up ladders etc.

Had a second seizure at 7.30. OH rang 111 who wanted to send an ambulance, so I'm at A&E - told by triage I've done the right thing coming - so waiting to be assessed, told CT and bloods mandatory, other tests possible.

Will update when I know more...

I remember nothing of the seizures, have had 3-4 episodes whilst here.

Musicaltheatremum- triage nurse said conditions like epilepsy and brain tumours needs ruling out. I am so sorry for your loss.
