I had a fit last night

Ihadafit · 23/11/2016 11:24

Just need some hand-holding and impressions.

My DP was woken up last night by me "having a fit" - me eyes were open and vacant, I was completely unresponsive and shaking violently.

I hope this isn't epilepsy etc. Thankfully I already have a GP appointment booked for this afternoon.

Really, really, scared...

So sorry its happened again but glad you're in the right place. Hope you get some rest and some answers soon.

DYRK1a · 24/11/2016 02:54

Well done to your DH for calling an ambulance but he needs to call 999 rather than 111.
5 minutes is normally were we we would give rescue meds with my son, so that seizure is long enough.

You are now in the best place for investigations. Best of luck and keep in touch OP.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 24/11/2016 03:17

Please discuss first aid with your dh, he needs to understand when to call 999 or 111 or just to wait, esp if you have kids. Why he didn't call in the first place is beyond shocking. Good luck.

PitilessYank · 24/11/2016 03:19

Good luck to you, so glad that you are getting the care you need tonight,.

Ihadafit · 24/11/2016 03:58

Been seen. Doctor I saw has referred me as an urgent case to the Seizure Clinic. I had a 15 minute fit in the waiting area making it six seizures in five hours.

I should get a phone call Thurs or Fri for them to see me. Doc did say if I continue having seizures and I haven't been seen by the clinic to not hesitate in going back.

Really, really scared. He ruled nothing out. Confused

can only offer a hand to hold :( x

Le1890 · 24/11/2016 04:37

Are you still having a scan or wait until the clinic?x

Ihadafit · 24/11/2016 05:44

Sent home. Any investigations will be done by the seizure clinic.

Not very happy to be honest. Had six seizures in the department including a 15 minute one that he even saw part of - and didn't assist!

Feels like I can look forward to more seizures at home until the appointment. No guarantees then if everything is done as an outpatient.

devondream · 24/11/2016 06:01

So sorry to hear this. Please do not hesitate to return to A and E if you have more.

I have 3 people in my close circle who have had benign brain turnouts. All several years ago and all are doing really well. Stay strong.

devondream · 24/11/2016 06:02

Turnouts? stupid autocorrect. I meant tumour.

Shannaratiger · 24/11/2016 06:25

I developed epilepsy at 26. Now 44 just about controlled with Lamotrigine. It will take a while to get sorted but you'Lloyd get there. Good luck.Flowers

Klaptout · 24/11/2016 06:42

I understand the fear and the waiting for further investigations always feels like a long time.
Good that you've been seen and your DH knows to ring 999 if it should happen again.
Minds have a habit of thinking of the worst outcome, I know a few people that delvelop seizures as an adult, where no tumour activity found. Most of those people's seizures started during puberty.
When they do the tests they rule out the worst stuff first, then work from there.
My DH never had a seizure, he had tests due to headaches his confused state and his balance was bad, he did have a brain tumour.
So I think it's good that you're not showing any other symptoms.
I hope you get the tests quickly and that the results reassure you.

PacificDogwod · 24/11/2016 06:55

Aw crap, sorry to hear you had more seizures.

I can only begin to imagine how scary all this must be for you.

A+E are not best placed to investigate this, First Seizure Clinic is a much more qualified proposition and will arrange the most appropriate investigations for you, much as the wait must be horrible.
Make sure you eat regularly, keep hydrated and sleep enough, avoid alcohol just now - the opposite of all these may make you more likely to fit.

Thinking of you Thanks

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 24/11/2016 07:04

Nothing more to add than another virtual hand to hold. Thinking of you Flowers

missyB1 · 24/11/2016 07:21

I really hope you get that scan today OP. It would be a mistake to automatically assume this is epilepsy. All sorts of brain issues can cause fits, I'm not saying that to scare you it's just that the sooner a diagnosis is made the sooner treatment can start. If you don't hear anything today ring up.

Donthate · 24/11/2016 07:26

Hope you are ok OP. When are you being seen?

PosiePootlePerkins · 24/11/2016 07:49

Hi, sending Flowers, sorry to hear about this. My DH does have a brain tumour which causes seizures, his tumour is benign and slow growing and he lives a normal life apart from not being able to drive, he is on the right meds to control blood pressure and seizures. Just wanted to offer a positive story and let you know that although it is very very scary, it doesn't have to mean the worst. You will most likely be having a range of scans now including MRI. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

SpaceDinosaur · 24/11/2016 07:55

Seizures are potentially very very serious particularly if you don't have anything diagnosed.

Please ensure that your DH dials an ambulance every single time you have a fit. Or you dial an ambulance when you come out of one. Even if the responder chooses not to send anyone you need a medical professional to make that decision. 0 - multiple fits literally overnight is "worrying" if the number keeps ramping up they will endeavour to see you faster.

GlitteryFluff · 24/11/2016 07:56

Oh op how scary.
Definitely go back / get DH to call if you have more.
Hoping all goes well for you Flowers

christinarossetti · 24/11/2016 09:35

How long are you likely to have to wait for the seizure clinic apt?

If you have another fit today, call an ambulance or ensure those around you know to. As you don't yet know what you're dealing with (hopefully, nothing too scary), you have to err on the side of caution.

Ihadafit · 24/11/2016 12:52

I can't thank everyone enough for your responses at a time when I'm really, really scared.

I think A&E sent me home because they aren't well equipped to deal with seizures and the seizure clinic are. He said it's a priority referral and I will get a phone call today or tomorrow.

Not sure if I had another fit while sleeping, will have to ask OH when they get in.

The amount of seizures is quite worrying...

Thanks for all the responses, you're all really helping with this.

Thinking of you.

cestlavielife · 24/11/2016 14:10

seizures are common things for a and e to deal with i.e. treat while they happening -the clinic would be to talk about trying to find the cause of them and maybe preventive meds...

also a and e can send you directly for a ct scan in the ER.

they would have followed their protocol but you should go back or call 999 if you have another seizure and are concerned

so do (your dh) call 999 if you have another one you may need some intervention

Should I call an ambulance if someone has a seizure that lasts for more than 5 minutes?

Yes, you should call an ambulance for all types of seizure if:

You know it is the person’s first seizure or
The seizure continues for more than 5 minutes (unless this is usual for the person) or
One tonic-clonic seizure follows another without the person regaining consciousness between seizures or
The person is injured during the seizure or
You believe the person needs urgent medical attention

How are seizures that last for more than 5 minutes treated?

They are usually treated with emergency medicines.

Ihadafit · 24/11/2016 23:26

Another fit this evening lasting over five minutes.

Have felt like rubbish all day, have severe worsening upper right abdo pain too.

Have rung 111, waiting for a doctor to ring back...

MyKingdomForBrie · 24/11/2016 23:34

Oh ihad how ridiculous that you weren't seen at the clinic today. I would be insisting on remaining in hospital until you are taken directly to the clinic. So very scary, fingers crossed for you and just focus on the number of benign or manageable reasons for this - my dh has epilepsy and lives a totally normal life on meds.
