I had a fit last night

Just need some hand-holding and impressions.

My DP was woken up last night by me "having a fit" - me eyes were open and vacant, I was completely unresponsive and shaking violently.

I hope this isn't epilepsy etc. Thankfully I already have a GP appointment booked for this afternoon.

Really, really, scared...

Yes I'm in the UK.

I've had bloods taken, my temperature is spiking up and down. They have done no EEG, no CT/MRI.

Going to push for a neurological ward.

My muscles are wrecking. I have ME too so the pain is excruciating at the moment.

how scary for you OP.

I cannot believe that they are trying to discharge you. Can you refuse being discharged? you obviously needs tests urgently but hone doesn't sound like s save place for you in the meantime.

Goodness you need at least a CT.
Don't go anywhere .
Ask to speak to PALS if they try to send you home.
How many episodes in three days ?

Ihadafit · 25/11/2016 13:01

Not been counting but easily over 10 episodes in three days.

You poor thing, sometimes you have to really fight to be heard and not get repeatedly fobbed off. As you're feeling so rubbish can your DH be your voice?

Ilovenannyplum · 25/11/2016 13:15

OP, I'm so sorry you're in such a bad way. Don't be fobbed off, I really hope you're on the mend soon, you're very brave Flowers

mumonashoestring · 25/11/2016 13:24

Jesus.

Is there any chance that they're using your ME as a sort of 'dustbin diagnosis' and that's why they're being lazy about investigating this change properly?

Ask to see the duty consultant. Ask what they're currently investigating, and why you haven't been referred on for a CT scan. Make damned sure they realise how many episodes you've had now and that this is a completely new neurological condition for you - remove the possibility that different registrars are treating your case in isolation and not considering you as a 'whole' patient.

Paleogal · 25/11/2016 14:13

I would push and push to be seen if I were you. Hope it all turns out well. Flowers

Maudlinmaud · 25/11/2016 14:20

She really shouldn't have to push though. This is awful care on behalf of your gp and hospital. I am amazed they discharged the op for her to have a seizure in the car park.
Shocking I have never heard the like of it.

spondoolicker · 25/11/2016 14:24

Good luck OP, just focus on the now.

Titsywoo · 25/11/2016 16:48

It's all very strange - I would personally ask to be sent to another hospital if it happens again.

Ihadafit · 25/11/2016 17:24

I've insisted on things. Have been seen by a neurological registrar whilst in A&E; I'm having a head CT today, an EEG tomorrow or Monday, and an MRI as either inpatient/outpatient.

I've had none of my regular painkillers today, the upper abdo pain is excruciating yet they are just saying it's muscular...

I'm resident on a neurological ward at least so pushing the issue has at least had some results.

Many thanks for all the posts.

mumonashoestring · 25/11/2016 17:36

Well done x You shouldn't have to, but I'm glad you did!

PetalMettle · 25/11/2016 17:47

Well done you. You're in the best place and hopefully they'll be able to work it out soon

Ihadafit · 25/11/2016 17:56

Have just been told the most common causes of seizures are Epilepsy, brain tumours and dissociative seizures.

WTF...

OP posts:
mumonashoestring · 25/11/2016 18:08

Helpful Hmm Most practitioners prefer not to go into too much detail til they have some diagnostic stuff (test results) to go on - wish that stopped them from giving people just enough info to scare them without it being really worth discussing them in detail...

EnlightenedOwl · 25/11/2016 18:11

I have epilepsy (controlled by meds hold down full time job) saying that so even if it is epilepsy you know its livable with - the hard bit is getting a medication regime going that works identifying any triggers and working with that.
Anyway, i would hold off as much as you can using a phone, computer anything screen related - for now. It may be totally irrelevant but my epilepsy is photo-sensitive so visual stimulation inc flickering lights, screens etc can trigger a seizure. It may not make any difference for you personally but might be something to think about whilst this is happening.

Maudlinmaud · 25/11/2016 18:12

The ct will hopefully rule out any mass in the head..

lougle · 25/11/2016 18:15

This must be very frightening.

Ihadafit · 25/11/2016 18:24

Very frightening.

I'm shitting bricks

OP posts:
PetalMettle · 25/11/2016 18:38

I have epilepsy - nothing shows up on scans, I don't have brain tumour etc. When I was diagnosed they said that if you had 2 unexplained seizures you were automatically diagnosed epileptic, so don't wort too much about the term.
Can I ask about your periods/hormones? My first fit was when my periods returned and after that they were always just before I came on. This can be quite common so I'm just wondering whether you might have changed hormonal contraception or anything?

EnlightenedOwl · 25/11/2016 18:45

Good point PetalMettle.

Ihadafit · 25/11/2016 19:14

Regular periods. Was sterilised 15 years ago.

OP posts:
eatyourveg · 25/11/2016 20:03

I had a spate of seizures in my mid 30s, no apparent reason, nothing abnormal on any of the tests/scans. They said it was epilepsy as it was a series of seizures so I just pop a pill (lamotrigine) every morning and have not had one since. That was 17 years ago now. I remember getting a mammoth headache after each one and having no memory of what I was doing immediately before conking out so be reassured any feelings of being disorientated or fuzzy brained are very common.

Its not always bad news - if its epilepsy , as others have said, with the right medication you can be as right as rain. The worse thing about it all was having to surrender my driving licence for a year.

Hope you get an answer soon.

PetalMettle · 25/11/2016 20:34

Ah ok, probably not hormonal then. Veg'S post should hopefully be reassuring. And yy to feeling woozy and disorientated. The last one I had I wasn't right for a fortnight
