Healthy habits - Walktober

AliceInHinterland · 06/10/2016 12:12

I'm planning to add in one new healthy habit a month. I will try to make it a positive habit - something to do rather than not do. I will have a basic goal and if anyone wants to join me they can tailor it. I don't have any serious issues to address, but I do want to lose a few pounds and gain a bit of energy.
For October my base habit is walking.
I plan to walk for 30 minutes continuously each day for the rest of October. I'll check back in each day for accountability.
Anyone up for it?

I'm on nearly 15k today which must be a record for a while! It involved a trek to the shops and carrying back the heaviest bag ever, so might count as weights as well Wink.
I don't think I'd have done it if I wasn't making a concerted effort to walk so I do feel like this habit building is working! Beautiful sunny day here too so I may even have clocked up some vitamin D.
T0ld tell me more about that cake! I have an M&S dine in for £10 deal with my name on it.

Another good day, nearly 12k steps, but more treats too! Next month will definitely have to be food related...

Things are better here: 6K steps yesterday, despite it being a working day. And 8K today - the school walk & back is a brisk 40 mins, so I feel much better after that.

I'd like to do a diet thing next month too, Alice. I'd like to reduce my snacking. Get a few lbs off.

Can't believe it's November next week!

AliceInHinterland · 27/10/2016 21:17

That's great Sauvignon - how do you manage to keep it brisk with kids in tow?!
I'm going to aim for seven fruit & veg a day in the hope that I'll feel fuller and snack less.

My DS is 7, so can walk at a reasonable pace. DD is 3.5 & will still go in the buggy, so I can walk faster once I've dropped him off.

I'm dreading the next year or so, when she won't go in the buggy, but won't be able to manage the 2 mile trip on foot. Walking is my only exercise at the moment, and I don't get any child-free time during the week, so I'm keen to keep that going as much as possible.

AliceInHinterland · 27/10/2016 21:56

I can see why you're dreading it, you get used to one thing that works for you then they go and change the rules on you! I find a buggy invaluable too.

Keep up the good work Alice and sauvignon.
Blimey 15k steps is great.

My cake was date and banana loaf and I ate 3 slices yesterday!! Only had one small slice today.

11,500 steps today. Parked a very long way from the hospital.

AliceInHinterland · 28/10/2016 19:21

I've done my 30 minutes, although my step counter only says 7k. I'm sure that walking with the pram shortchanged me! A beautiful day again today and I know the fresh air and exercise is good for the baby too.

Cake sounds gorgeous by the way.

I managed 10k steps today. I had to walk round my house while listening to a radio play to get the total up. The dog looked at me like -what are you doing now? I didn't fancy going out in the dark. In on my own so no one to laugh at me.

SauvignonPlonker · 28/10/2016 22:32

I'm not one for waking on my own on the dark either, and with the clock change this weekend, there will be less opportunity.

7K steps today, despite not doing the school walk. Made up of shorter walks rather than my usual 40 mins. But way better than a working day (2.5K!!!)

AliceInHinterland · 29/10/2016 19:06

I'm only on about 4K today! It always seems the same at weekends, lots of rushing around getting in and out the car but no decent stretches. I think it's great that you didn't let the dark stop you T0ld!

Less than 6K steps today, despite being out for 4 hours. The joys of toddler pace & stop-start, faffing, etc.

T0ldmywrath · 29/10/2016 21:27

Hard going on the weekend but I have done 10k steps again. Beautiful afternoon here and so mild.

Sauvignon you must feel exhausted being out four hours.

AliceInHinterland · 29/10/2016 23:04

T0ld you are unstoppable!
Sauvignon I'm sure the benefits of being out and about will be there even if they don't directly translate into steps.
Enjoy the extra hour tonight!

Francis take it easy out there. Glad you're on the mend.

AliceInHinterland · 30/10/2016 18:02

Hi Francis welcome back, that sounds awful! I'm going to do walking + 7 fruit & veg a day next month so you could stick with us for just the walking if you like?
I've been useless today, the less said the better!

T0ldmywrath · 30/10/2016 19:00

I'm determined to do 10k steps for October and I've managed apart from one day when I was unwell. Done today so just tomorrow to complete. I'm not sure about Nov challenge. I will keep up the steps but perhaps join you on 5 fruit and vegetables per day. Alice not sure I can match your 7 portions!

AliceInHinterland · 31/10/2016 20:17

Finished on a high 14k, so pleased and I think it's been a great challenge. Amazing that you've only missed one T0ld.
I'm going for the high fruit and veg count to try to crowd out junk, 1x breakfast, 2x lunch, 2x dinner, 2x snacks - should be achievable!

T0ldmywrath · 31/10/2016 21:51

BlimeyAlice 14,000 steps is brilliant. The sun has been out in force today and I managed just a bit over 11k steps. Roll on November!

SauvignonPlonker · 31/10/2016 21:59

Well done you guys! Over 10K steps! I'm at 6K steps, as it's a working day, then straight out for trick & treating. Now it's dark & rainy. But it's school pickup tomorrow & I think I can squeeze in a walk at lunchtime on Wednesday at work, so hopefully will get more steps. Average 6K this last week.

Hi my marching army, come on over to the new thread here:
November

OP posts:
AliceInHinterland · 01/11/2016 18:55

Francis I'm sorry you're not feeling great, but I'm glad you're feeling up to racking up the steps.
Sauvignon that's great for a work day, maybe you need a two-tier goal.
I think T0ld wins the thread medal for only missing one day! Fantastic.
