Healthy habits - Walktober

AliceInHinterland · 06/10/2016 12:12

I'm planning to add in one new healthy habit a month. I will try to make it a positive habit - something to do rather than not do. I will have a basic goal and if anyone wants to join me they can tailor it. I don't have any serious issues to address, but I do want to lose a few pounds and gain a bit of energy.
For October my base habit is walking.
I plan to walk for 30 minutes continuously each day for the rest of October. I'll check back in each day for accountability.
Anyone up for it?

Well done T0ld I've managed 10k too! You could try that high-intensity thing on your exercise bike, isn't that meant to take about 5 mins?
I will try to add in some more exercise ones later (probably a bit of yoga and weights) but my diet does need some serious attention too - very beige. I might aim for 7 a day instead.

I've not managed a walk today - I often find that at the weekends when everyone is about. It's harder to make time for myself - but I'm going to try harder tomorrow!

A paltry 3.5K steps today BlushIt's been pouring with rain so took the kids to the cinema. Oh dear. Will try to get out tomorrow.

AliceInHinterland · 16/10/2016 09:35

Oh Francis that's beautiful! I'm sure creativity is as good for the soul as walking.
I'm gearing myself to go out while it's dry, and get it done early.

Francis you have been busy making your home look lovely.

I managed 10,900 steps yesterday. Not sure about today as it's tipping down. But I have a few bits I need to do today that will involve some walking, I'll have to see!

AliceInHinterland · 16/10/2016 12:24

T0ld well done you are making up for the rest of us!

I've done 45 mins at a toddler's pace - not far but in the countryside which I think has it's own benefits.

Alice I was walking at toddler pace too! Managed nearly 9K steps today, weekly average is about 7K & I've only got to the target of 10K one day.
Have eaten loads this weekend, mostly healthy but need to get some weight off. Urgh.

T0ldmywrath · 16/10/2016 21:37

I managed 10,500 today. A very untypical Sunday so I'm pleased with that. I am very overweight but feeling a tad more fit with all the walking. Small steps & all that.

Wow to getting loads of steps at toddler pace!

AliceInHinterland · 17/10/2016 18:31

Well I got out for 50 mins but was diverted to the beach by a toddler who only wanted to throw stones in to the sea! I tried to pace about a bit but calling it a walk would be a stretch. I've done some yoga today though so all in all I'm feeling okay about it.
Sounds like you both had a very non-lazy Sunday Sauvignon and T0ld. The more overweight you are the more calories you are burning walking!

1/2 hour done, beautiful evening, bumped into a friend, accidentally bought cookies on the way home... ooops!

SauvignonPlonker · 18/10/2016 19:31

Well, I've managed well the last couple of days - got to 10K steps. Today the step count has been low as I'm stuck round the house, toilet training DD.

I did go out on my bike for an hour though. My God, it almost killed me! I haven't cycled for over 4 years (since having DD) & haven't quite got the hang of the gears. My cheeks were pink & my legs will be sore tomorrow. Feel scarily unfit.

T0ldmywrath · 18/10/2016 21:23

Alice I was unwell yesterday, so only managed 8,000. Back on form today & on 11,500. You have the right idea- chat with a friend & cookies.

Sauvignon I bet your bum is sore tomorrow! Well done-did you cycle on the flat? I remember cycling for miles all day when I was in my teens, can't even manage a few minutes now. Sad

AliceInHinterland · 18/10/2016 22:57

T0ld 8,000 when you are unwell is fab, I only target 7.5k normally! I hope you're feeling a lot better. We are all sniffles in this house too.
Sauvignon that's great - I really lack confidence on a bike but I really want my kids not to inherit that so I need to bite the bullet at some point! Double points for toilet training, also something I'm in denial about - he's only 2.3 so I'm hoping we can postpone a while yet.
Maybe we can make getting back on our bikes regularly a goal at some point!

SauvignonPlonker · 18/10/2016 23:08

told my bum is sore already!

Alice I'm not hugely confident on my bike either. I dread having to give signals & take 1 arm off the handles to do so. I keep to quiet roads/paths only.

We're doing searching for Pokemon Go with DS tomorrow - hopefully that will get a few steps in!!!

T0ldmywrath · 19/10/2016 15:41

I'm in my fifties so when I was a teen the roads were much quieter. I went everywhere on my bike and thought nothing of it. I haven't cycled for about 5 years!

I met 10,000 target by 1 pm today as walked to and from work. I'm currently snuggling with my dog on the sofa. Smile

SauvignonPlonker · 19/10/2016 16:44

No bike today, and my bum isn't as sore as i thought it would be.

Did a short walk to the shops & back ( 3500 steps), then went on a Pokémon hunt with DS - who held the phone (which has the step-counter on it).

We were out for about an hour, and I checked my steps when we got back in. It didn't count them!!! Aargh! Must have been because he was holding the phone, rather than it being in my pocket.

Pah!!

AliceInHinterland · 19/10/2016 20:00

T0ld that's great work, nice to be done so early, I do think that's the way to go.
Sauvignon do you know how many steps you normally cover in an hour? Can you treat yourself to a FitBit?
I haven't managed it today, I feel quite disappointed - I genuinely feel like it was making a difference. I will try to do 1/2 hour yoga instead, and tomorrow is another day!

OP posts:
T0ldmywrath · 19/10/2016 21:25

I think my Fitbit is the best thing ever Alice & Sauvignon. It really encourages me to meet my daily target of 10,000 steps. I've only had it one month.

SauvignonPlonker · 19/10/2016 22:20

I actually won a fit-but last year, but sold it on to fund Christmas. Am not allowed to wear jewellery at work; and I don't like things round my wrists neurotic.

DD seems to be doing well with the toilet training, so it's going to be another day stuck indoors tomorrow,

T0ldmywrath · 20/10/2016 07:48

Toilet training is not easy -well it wasn't for mine. But in my day we did it earlier - children were expected to be dry in the day at about age 2, dry at night by age 3. Children weren't allowed at playschool unless toilet trained (unless they had additional needs of course)

Good luck Sauvignon.

AliceInHinterland · 20/10/2016 17:54

I've done my 30 minutes including showers and rainbows, glad to get back into it Smile
You can give me all of your tips once you're done Sauvignon.

OP posts:
T0ldmywrath · 20/10/2016 20:00

Alice what are showers and rainbows please?

Met my 10,000 step goal today.
