Healthy habits - Walktober

AliceInHinterland · 06/10/2016 12:12

I'm planning to add in one new healthy habit a month. I will try to make it a positive habit - something to do rather than not do. I will have a basic goal and if anyone wants to join me they can tailor it. I don't have any serious issues to address, but I do want to lose a few pounds and gain a bit of energy.
For October my base habit is walking.
I plan to walk for 30 minutes continuously each day for the rest of October. I'll check back in each day for accountability.
Anyone up for it?

Ooh this thread is for me! What a great idea to add in one healthy habit a month Alice .

I bought a Fitbiy 3 weeks ago & since then I've managed 10,000 steps per day, some days I've gone that little bit extra to 5 miles (about 12k steps)

My job involves being on my feet & walking around so on work days, no problem. On non work days/weekend the poor little dog is wearing herself out with my extra walkies.Smile

I've also joined a local dog walking group & we meet once a fortnight, sure makes the walking seem better.

T0ldmywrath · 11/10/2016 20:28

I am overweight & use My Fitness Pal sporadically. Perhaps I'll do it properly for November.

SauvignonPlonker · 11/10/2016 22:00

Managed 8K steps today, mostly done by walking to/from school. Tomorrow will be another low score, but Thursday & Friday will be better.

I'm near you Francis in Edinburgh - the weather has just turned the last few days.

AliceInHinterland · 11/10/2016 22:46

Francis hopefully the good weather is making its way North for you. I have heard walking is as effective as antidepressants for mild to moderate depression so let's hope that's true. I switch between mild depression and moderate anxiety and I think it helps both.
Bin I get that strange inertia where I find it so hard to get started and out of the house - then I wonder what the big deal was. I've decided to have a sort of default walk so I don't spend ages procrastinating too.

T0ld welcome! I think a few of us would like to shed a few pounds - I will aim for a food habit next month but I want to keep it positive and not too radical (fighting perfectionism) personally. We'll go for the same thing though, a general goal with something specific for each of us so hopefully it will be something that will work for everyone.
Anyway sounds like you're doing brilliantly.

Thanks for checking in Sauvignon sounds like you can still hit your 5/7 target.
Anyone else to check in, or wants to join us, there are still 20 days of October left, more than enough to form a good habit.

I love to walk and talk, I think there's something about being side by side that takes the pressure off and makes conversation flow.
15k is fantastic, I was feeling active at 11k.
Off to get some sleep now and hopefully all hot our targets tomorrow.

T0ldmywrath · 12/10/2016 12:46

Thanks for making me welcome Alice - I think a few stone is needed to be lost in my case though! How I wish it was a few pounds.

AliceInHinterland · 12/10/2016 13:00

We all start where we are T0ld - I'm not especially overweight but am genetically at risk of metabolic disorder and years of office jobs have taken their toll on me. I figure as long as I'm making progress that's all I can ask of myself. I also don't want to approach this like I'm trying to fix myself, just doing nice things for myself that make me feel better and invest in my future.
45 mins today to the library and back - also good because it stops me indulging in my habit of buying books!

Chunkamatic · 12/10/2016 13:06

Hi, can I join in too?
Although I feel like I'm always on the go, my activity and fitness levels are probably shocking. I'm also noticing my shape changing and weight is staying round my middle a lot more.

I have also just made an appointment to see the GP about my anxiety. I feel constantly overwhelmed and some days it's is crippling. I know that getting out and being active will help, but I suppose it's a fear of another failure that holds me back.

Anyway, just up from a night duty. Going to grab a coffee and get dressed and get myself out!

AliceInHinterland · 12/10/2016 13:52

Hi Chunkamatic yes please join us! What will your target be? Anxiety is a bitch, walking really helps me to be less insular I guess because I can get out in the world but no pressure. I can smile at a few people if I want, but they're nice low risk social interactions.

After a good 5 day run in danger of slowing down , only about 2000 steps so far today .
Thanks for the prompt Alice . I am going to do a bit of time management to make sure I walk to my friend's house this afternoon and don't just jump in the car!

Good work so far Francis.
You're right Bin so much of the time I choose the car because I haven't left enough time to walk - hope you manage it!

T0ldmywrath · 13/10/2016 19:50

I'm on target for my 10,000 steps (just pressed the fitbit & I'm on 9,838 & 13 flights of stairs!)Currently slobbing in front of the log burner with a cuppa tea & watching Great British Menu. Grin

AliceInHinterland · 14/10/2016 13:09

Well done T0ld your evening sounds lovely! I've done 2x 15 this morning and I think that's it for me today other than chasing children.

Managed 8K today & 11K yesterday, have managed to walk for 1hr both days. Daily average 8K, I was managing 10K+ over the summer, so it's less than usual. Hopefully I'll manage daily walks this week, as it's school holidays & the DC will partly be in childcare.

Alice have you thought about what your healthy habit will be for November?

AliceInHinterland · 14/10/2016 21:40

Hi Sauvignon great job! I think it's natural to have to make a bit more of an effort to get high numbers during autumn and winter.
I think I will try to stack on another habit (keep the walking) - probably to do with diet, and something positive rather than giving up anything. I was thinking perhaps prepare 2x veg for snacking on every day, since this can be done the night before or a few days in advance. I'm open to ideas though!

OP posts:
AliceInHinterland · 14/10/2016 21:41

I don't think that will be as high impact as walking though, so might need to think bigger!

OP posts:
T0ldmywrath · 14/10/2016 22:23

I've got an exercise back that hasn't had much use (except as a clothes airer) I might add that in for November. Just 5 minutes per day to start with (Bradley Wiggins eat our heart out)

10,000 steps done today.

T0ldmywrath · 14/10/2016 22:23

?back- I think bike is more like it lol.
