Healthy habits - Walktober

AliceInHinterland · 06/10/2016 12:12

I'm planning to add in one new healthy habit a month. I will try to make it a positive habit - something to do rather than not do. I will have a basic goal and if anyone wants to join me they can tailor it. I don't have any serious issues to address, but I do want to lose a few pounds and gain a bit of energy.
For October my base habit is walking.
I plan to walk for 30 minutes continuously each day for the rest of October. I'll check back in each day for accountability.
Anyone up for it?

Just back in from my 45min circuit, at nearly 8 K steps today.

It will all go to pot tomorrow as I'm working & have a lunchtime meeting so no chance of a walk.

AliceInHinterland · 09/10/2016 19:29

Ah no, can you take a few sneaky long circuits round the office? Only works if it is quite big I suppose!

Hi not checked on for a few days but did a round of the shops and a walk of the dog yesterday and today I walked to the shops and round then. My bill did all today's dog walking.

AliceInHinterland · 10/10/2016 09:33

That's good to get some in at the weekend talk since you said that was your key challenge.

May I join in too please? I'm attempting brisk walks which I hope will mean i'll be able to start running in a few months time, after my failed attempt at running using the NHS couch to 5K app

AliceInHinterland · 10/10/2016 15:11

Hi oats you are very welcome! I'm aiming to run at some point too, but having had two babies in two years I want to make sure I'm really ready first. How far did you get with C25K? When I've done it before it seemed to suddenly get really hard in the middle. Maybe in a couple of months we can buddy up on that!

AliceInHinterland · 10/10/2016 15:11

Ps what will your goal be this month?

OP posts:
Oatsinajar · 10/10/2016 15:18

Alice thanks for the welcome :) I only managed the first week Blush then my asthma returned and I stopped.

I think I'm aiming for a 10-15 min brisk walk to start with. I'd rather start small and keep it regular. I haven't been today yet.

Bin85 · 10/10/2016 15:26

Also interested in joining please
I have been trying to do 10,000 steps a day ( see thread in exercise) and find a quick 30-40 minute walk helps achieve this
I don't manage it every day so looking for any motivation I can get!

talksensetome · 10/10/2016 15:35

That's me done my target 50 mins got another 2x40 mins to come today too.

AliceInHinterland · 10/10/2016 17:26

Oats I totally agree that it's better to make a habit of something achievable. I am terrible for trying to change everything at once and it's never worked for me!
Bin great to have you on board, I rarely achieve 10k so good on you.
Talk you are putting us all to shame! Well done. I've done about 45 mins again at a leisurely pace but I was pleased to fit it in as it involved juggling a couple of parcels, a toddler and a baby and it was so tempting to drive.

Urgh! Only 4K'ish steps today; no chance at work & straight from there to pick up DC from nursery.

Tomorrow will be better.....

AliceInHinterland · 10/10/2016 22:34

Onwards and upwards Sauvignon some days are just too busy.

OP posts:
Bin85 · 10/10/2016 22:34

Thank you
It's 10 30 pm now and have only done 7,500 so far .Don't really fancy walking in the dark so will carry on clearing up kitchen and see what I can finish up with !!

AliceInHinterland · 10/10/2016 22:41

I hate walking in the dark. 7.5k is very respectable, for some reason I'm only on about 6.4k. Either my walk was much slower than I realised or the pram/sling combo messed with it somehow. I wandered round the supermarket aimlessly for ages earlier too which normally bumps it up.

Thank you Alice
You motivated me and I made 10,000 just!
Another day today and here we go again !
Need to walk to my haircut and to town rather than take car so time to stop spending so long on Facebook , Pinterest ,Mumsnet etc and get motivated !!

AliceInHinterland · 11/10/2016 12:58

Well done Bin that's seriously impressive at 10.30pm! I've done two lots of 15 minutes this morning and I think that will be it today, although I hope to be proven wrong.

Bin85 · 11/10/2016 15:34

Any thing is brilliant with 2 little ones Alice!

AliceInHinterland · 11/10/2016 17:13

It's a beautiful day down here so we've been out for another walk, the dog and the toddler were very pleased! A toddler paced hour, and approaching 10k steps. How is everyone getting on?

OP posts:
Bin85 · 11/10/2016 19:14

Well done !
Have had a good day 13,000+ and feel much less sluggish and better for it .
However the housework , laundry , admin work are all behind hand !!
Maybe I will have enough energy to
power through some tomorrow?!

Hello Francis that sounds great - where are you that the weather was horrid? We're on the south coast and it was almost summery! I love the headspace I get when I'm doing part my of the commute by walking.

OP posts:
AliceInHinterland · 11/10/2016 19:30

Bin I do think it's true that you can't do it all and if you're going to prioritise something, your health is a good place to start - especially as it does give you more energy. I'm definitely feeling better for it already, less snappy.

Sounds good Francis
When I'm pounding the streets I'm thinking of others doing the same and hopefully when I'm stuck in a chair in front of the TV you lot will inspire me to get moving.
