Healthy habits - Walktober

AliceInHinterland · 06/10/2016 12:12

I'm planning to add in one new healthy habit a month. I will try to make it a positive habit - something to do rather than not do. I will have a basic goal and if anyone wants to join me they can tailor it. I don't have any serious issues to address, but I do want to lose a few pounds and gain a bit of energy.
For October my base habit is walking.
I plan to walk for 30 minutes continuously each day for the rest of October. I'll check back in each day for accountability.
Anyone up for it?

Well, I managed to get to 10K steps today; I walked with DS in the morning, chasing Pokémon for 2 hours, but mainly around the house after that with DD.

DD is doing really well with her toilet training; only 1 accident in 48hrs. She is 3.5 & way older than most kids at starting, but hasn't been ready till now (a few failed attempts involving piddling all over the house, with no control, or withholding). I'm of the view that when a child is ready, they'll get it in a weekend. My mum & MIL don't agree, of course, as we were all "out of nappies" by 2 - which just translates as being let loose on the garden with no pants on i.e. Not toilet trained.

Anyway, haven't worked out plans for tomorrow, hoping I can squeeze in some walks somewhere.

Well done both, you are doing amazingly! I'm on 8k and happy with that. There were literally rain showers and then rainbows on my evening walk, rather lovely really. I was posting with a baby trying to eat my phone and a toddler wrestling at my feet so was perhaps too brief to make much sense.
I'm definitely not potty training for a while, we talk about it all with him but I don't have the energy for a battle of wills on that front. Sounds like your DD is doing great, so that makes me feel better about waiting. I've also heard they're less likely to regress if you wait. So glad we're not under pressure to train them by 2 T0ld!

Half an hour done, about 8k so far. An unanticipated benefit is that I'm getting little errands done so also ticking off my to do list! How is everyone today?

Alice I thought showers and rainbows was some yoga poseGrin

I didn't realise about toilet training and waiting until they were ready. But with hindsight my daughter probably was as just before her2nd birthday she would remove her nappy and wee on her pot. I'd just had another baby and definitely did not want to be toilet training. She'd bring the pot to show me and end up spilling it. The baby wasn't even a week old so it might have been an attention thing. It was a pain that she'd not keep her nappy on. They all get there in the end.

AliceInHinterland · 21/10/2016 21:37

It sounds like a lovely yoga pose T0ld! I love yoga but never get round to it, it will definitely work its way into my goals in the next few months. It's also something I can do with the baby, although the toddler will just want to get involved, which is cute but not very zen.
So your two are grown up now? It's good to get perspective that some day I will look back and laugh about all the things like potty training that seem so important when everyone is asking about them!

I have 3 DC and all in their twenties. I can still recall the pain of toilet training though. It's probably because we were taught to introduce at too early an age.

Things like delirious with tiredness soon pass. Enjoy this wonderful time with young children.Smile

AliceInHinterland · 22/10/2016 19:50

I do try to enjoy it and remember that really these are precious moments.
Right I'm on 8k today which I'm happy with, I had about half an hour of wandering round a local small town, very pretty, buying steak and children's books - two of my favourite things!

OP posts:
T0ldmywrath · 22/10/2016 20:49

I managed 10k yesterday & on target for it today (about 300 steps short, but I'll do that pootling at home)

It's been a lovely Autumn day here today, hope it was for you when wandering around the town. I love buying books & if I have a book token, I spend ages browsing.

SauvignonPlonker · 22/10/2016 21:13

Oh dear, not doing so well on the stepping front - only 4.5K steps today & less yesterday. Took the kids swimming (no steps!) & still having to stick fairly close to the house for toilet training. Went out for a treat bribery with DD & had to take a portable toilet seat Shock

Going to risk the zoo tomorrow so there should be more steps. And hopefully no accidents.

AliceInHinterland · 23/10/2016 16:20

I've been for a lovely walk along the seafront, beautiful day down here, about an hour. The zoo sounds like great fun!

Once again the baby has come to the rescue again by insisting that we go for a walk for her nap, a bit of rocking apparently not being an acceptable substitute! 1/2 hour round the streets - a bit boring but invigorating, and hit my 7.5k target too.
How are the rest of you?

OP posts:
SauvignonPlonker · 24/10/2016 18:32

That's great, Alice - well done!

I'm doing shockingly badly! Only 2.5K today, been at work.

Last few days have been less than 5K

The schools are back tomorrow so I'll walk there & back tomorrow, which is 4K steps.

T0ldmywrath · 24/10/2016 20:36

I have no youngsters to cater to, but my poor dog has been on longer walks again.

I've done 10k Sat & Sun and 12k today. My dad is in hospital & I have to park quite a way from the ward, so that is always a few thousand steps.

T0ldmywrath · 24/10/2016 20:38

The only form of exercise I get is walking & standing/walking at work. I wear specs & don't like swimming (I'm not a very confident swimmer)

AliceInHinterland · 24/10/2016 21:43

Sauvignon sometimes it's a good start just to realise that you're not naturally getting your steps in and something's got to give. I remember working from home with a pedometer on and being totally shocked how little I moved (pre-children).
T0ld I bet your dog is loving it! My poor little one often gets left at home as I can't wrangle him and the double buggy. He also stops to sniff incessantly so it can be hard to get a pace up when walking him on a lead. Your step counts have been amazing.
I love swimming but it is too time consuming for me - I think I like it because it's the only PE I could do at school! Will you consider working in some yoga/weights with me later on?

OP posts:
AliceInHinterland · 24/10/2016 21:43

I'm sorry to hear about your dad too - is he doing okay?

T0ldmywrath · 24/10/2016 22:13

ThanksAlice we're just waiting for results. He's had lots go wrong health wise. Been in hospital for a few weeks and we hope for the best. But when you reach his age .mid eighties things start to deteriorate.

T0ldmywrath · 24/10/2016 22:15

Yoga, I've never considered that. So if you have any pointers for an old gimmer like me.. I'd be willing to try. I'm not strong so not sure about weights!

AliceInHinterland · 25/10/2016 10:11

I think yoga is better for you the worse you are at it, if you see what I mean, in the same way that walking makes the biggest difference if you're a bit unfit. I did very light weights when I was pregnant because I had gestational diabetes and it made a big difference to my blood sugar levels if I did them after a meal. It was interesting to see how much difference a little exercise makes.
I'm sorry about your dad, all that waiting around for results can really wear you down.

Got my walk in today, despite the pouring rain Smile we lifted out in buggy covers, waterproof coats, wellies and did a walk via the library and shops. Thank goodness we did, I think things would have got very fraught if we hadn't all got some fresh air!

OP posts:
T0ldmywrath · 25/10/2016 20:31

Thanks for your supportive messages Alice.
I hit my 10k again, it has been gorgeous here today, even warm in the sunshine this afternoon. Cold now & log burner on.

Sorry you've had the rain, we could do with some here don't rub it in too much

AliceInHinterland · 25/10/2016 21:52

I love those clear bright days - and an excuse to put the wood burner on at night! I don't really mind a bit of rain either though, like you say sometimes we need it. The baby is only five months so I'm mostly upstairs in the evenings, snuggled under the duvet.
I'm so impressed with your consistent 10k plus numbers. I really feel that even making just a bit more effort is making a difference for me, I hope you do too.

Good work everyone! I got back to my usual routine today & walked up for school pickup so am at 8.5K steps. I really enjoyed the walk.

Tomorrow is a work day so it won't be good, but Thursday & Friday should be ok. Onwards & upwards!

AliceInHinterland · 26/10/2016 10:18

Good to hear from you Sauvignon! Well done for getting back into it. It's a lovely day down here so just planning what I'm going to do today.

T0ldmywrath · 26/10/2016 18:40

On target today (about 50 steps to go) & I've enjoyed the Autumn day.

Well done Sauvignon, they say that walking lifts the mood & I definitely feel sunnier - this time of year is a right downer for me usually.

I've baked this evening to eat with a cup of tea when GBBO final is on. I had to test the cake just in case & it's fine, so that's good. Grin
