Apparently, ds's class only had 22 on Friday because of it (normally 30). Poor ds was hit with it on Sunday night - horribly high temperature, nasty chesty cough, shivering, aches and pains - really nasty. Poor boy is still not better (he looks v pale) which is very unlike him.

Of course, yours truly has a version (though I'm ok) which meant last night I was sweating so much, I thought I'd spilt my water all over me!

Luckily, the asthmatic ones have avoided it so far though dd has told everyone we have bird flu .

So who else is stuck with it?

I didn't get any antibs (phlegm was green) but I felt like my chest was starting to clear rather than getting worse iyswim and I'm not asthmatic. I'm still coughing but my chest is loose now rather than tight.

I imagine dd (if hers gets worse) may need antibs as she has asthma and has a tendency to have these things sit on her chest.

Actually, I'd be concerned if anyone with asthma got this thing because it hit my chest very hard and I don't normally get affected by coughs at all.

Have we wroked out exactly what this virus is yet? I mean, I don't want to sound like a pathetic man, but I would call what I had flu as I really could not do anything but lie in bed for 3-4 days. If it is the flu virus, I am fairly confident the asthmatics in my family (ds2 and dh) are safe as they had the flu jab.

HEIFER · 09/02/2007 14:02

Another one with DD with hacking cough and feeling poorly.

She has coughed for the last 4 nights now and just can't sleep for longer than 20 mins without waking up coughing..

She is knackered (as am I)...

Any suggestions to stop the coughing long enough for her to have some sleep?

She is alergic to Mediced but is taking mixture of nurafen/calpol/ticklylicks..

Any thing else I can try... anything drinks etc that will help?

furcoatandnoknickers · 09/02/2007 14:02

right - my go!! I had in-bed -not-moving flu for two days at the beginning of term!!!
Didnt get better, went to docs, 1st lot of Antibios, after week not any better 2nd lot, same, but stronger (and I never take them)still felt crap so went back (I never saw the doc so much- even when preg. Worried he might think I fancy him in stalkerish sort of way).
3rd lot - new type, spit swab and chest x-ray. Felt even worse again, shivering and fever.
Went back today NEARLY HALF TERM swab came back
IS chest infection, but culture they grew off spit is resistant to the THREE WEEKS OF ANTI-BIOTICS that I have been taking.

so outcome is have proper ones now. Have THRUSH and my period, somehow have piles (never had before) oh and as well as my three for half term I am looking after my 1yr old nephew whilst bro ans sil go skiing.

HOW WILL I COPE
AM FEELING SO MATYRE-ISH(SP)
Oh and dp just hapened t o mention I hadnt said sorry for something 2 fecking weeks ago....di dums
rant over

furcoatandnoknickers · 09/02/2007 14:08

Heifer - how old is she?
You need to raise her head up either with pillows or books under the top legs of bed/cot.

This if she is over - 12 or 24 months (due to honey) is fantastic.
1 tspn honey
1 tspn vinegar (pref wine vinegar)
lemon juice and hot/warm water

tis vee soothing and honey has antiseptic in it, vinegar cuts through phlegm
lemon also and vit c etc

Have friends who are not v.homeopathic/natural an even they swear by this

awsome · 09/02/2007 14:30

HEIFER · 09/02/2007 14:53

cheers for that furcoat. DD is 3 so sounds good.

Unfortunately just check cupboards and whilst have white wine vinegar and greek honey - no lemon and DD not really well enough to get to local shops with me...

will have to get DH to get a lemon on the way home!...

furcoatandnoknickers · 09/02/2007 16:11

you can use lemon barley/ribena etc!!

madmarchhare · 09/02/2007 22:21

DS has such a hacking cough he has thrown up all over himself, bedding, floor etc.. for three nights now. He's so upset by it he's in tears when he starts coughing because he knows whats coming. Its far worse at night or when he's been running around.

Just how long do you leave it before seeing GP (without being paranoid mother type)?

expatinscotland · 09/02/2007 22:23

Madmarch
See the GP. Dd1 was doing this and it was HELL. Robutussin was doing FA. The GP was able to prescribe something for her.

Have you tried some wet towels on the heater in there, bowels of water on the heater or a humidifier?

HEIFER · 09/02/2007 22:26

hi MadMarch Hare

DD (3) has had it for the past 4 night - and now weekend cant take her to the docs.. If she still has it on Monday I will take her just to make sure not chest infection etc.

She hasn't slept for longer than 30 mins for the past 4 nights!

We have her in her buggie at the moment, so she can sit up and sleep - then have to work out what to do with her when DH goes to bed...

she has been asleep for 10 mins without coughing so hoping she will sleep for a while (so what am I doing on here -I should be in bed)...

DD has been sick about twice a day so far - just pylemmy sick (not eaten) much and as you said it upsets her when she starts coughing as she knows it will go on for ages...

hope you lo gets better soon.

She wouldn't drink the orange/honey drink (didn't hae lemon( and only wants water!

Aloha · 09/02/2007 22:28

Dd has this I think. Awful racking cough and hot and limp. I am feeling cold and ill too now. Will take dd to gp if cough gets worse.

expatinscotland · 09/02/2007 22:28

HEIFER
Ring NHS 24 and get the baby an emergency appointment. They can arrange for you to see a GP.

She really should be checked out if she's a baby.

expatinscotland · 09/02/2007 22:29

DD1's went into chest infection.

I've got it now and it's still awful.

At least, I can dope myself up w/Sudafed and the like.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/02/2007 22:31

We've had a bit of this here.

Rhubarb · 09/02/2007 22:32

dh got it now.

Big wuss he is!

expatinscotland · 09/02/2007 22:33

It's bad, Rhu, but not THAT bad in adults.

All the cases of true influenza I've had have been far, far worse.

HEIFER · 10/02/2007 05:56

Expat - DD is 3 (which is why I am happy to wait until Monday)I would have taken her to the docs days ago if she was still a baby.

I had it the other week and have to say it was bad, after trying to carry on looking after DD for 3 days I finally begged DH to stay home for work so I could stay in bed (which he did for 1 day then went back to work, but I ended up in bed for 4 days!

Have to say it was the worst illness I have had for years...

DD doesn't seem to be that ill, just can't sleep due to the coughing, which is why I haven't taken her to the docs - but have to be honest and say I wish I did earlier in the week just to be sure....

BettySpaghetti · 10/02/2007 09:21

We finally turned a corner yesterday -after 4/5 days of antibiotics, Calpol and Nurofen DS finally didn't have a temp (it had been 40+) and is now eating and playing!

Hes still full of snot though so every 2 mins he comes over to me and points to his streaming nose witha sort of "eugh" grunt and I have to wipe it.

Furball · 10/02/2007 09:29

betty - just read apart from the lurgey, sorry to hear about your gran

BettySpaghetti · 10/02/2007 09:35

Thanks furball.

Yes, since our meet up I've not had the best of times. Lots of illness which means cabin fever of course (I am determined to go out today even if I have to wade through the remaining snow to get to Neros!).

My Gran dying was sort of sudden although in a way it was a blessing as she has deteriorated so badly with dementia that her quality of life was not good. She had also become physically very frail.

She was my last surviving grandparent. DD was sad that she doesn't have any GreatGrandparents left now .
