Who else is stuck at home with poorly kids? This flu/chesty bug going round is just horrid!

Apparently, ds's class only had 22 on Friday because of it (normally 30). Poor ds was hit with it on Sunday night - horribly high temperature, nasty chesty cough, shivering, aches and pains - really nasty. Poor boy is still not better (he looks v pale) which is very unlike him.

Of course, yours truly has a version (though I'm ok) which meant last night I was sweating so much, I thought I'd spilt my water all over me!

Luckily, the asthmatic ones have avoided it so far though dd has told everyone we have bird flu .

So who else is stuck with it?

DS3 has had it since the weekend before last. He was off all last week. Sent him back on Monday because he seemed better, but got a call just after lunch asking me to go and get him. Poor thing was as white as a sheet and coughing madly again.

Kept him off yesterday and today he's complaining that his left eye is hurting, so it's off to the docs shortly.

Will probably keep him off for the rest of the week to give his system a chance to recover - especially as there is snow threatened for tomorrow!

PrincessPeaHead · 07/02/2007 09:55

Right. Out of me dh and 4 kids
DH fine. But he had pneumococcal jab and flu jab so is now SUPERMAN
ME - spend much of last week in and out of bed with horrid cough, aches and pains, colossal migraine on fri (2nd ever in my life) then sinusitus on the weekend and am now on antibs but still hacking up crap from my lungs. Am Bored Of It.
DD1. Had intermittent fever and earache and off school for 2 days but seems to have recovered so probably virus
DS1. Has horrid cough, feels horrible, no fever, doc diagnosed chest infection, on antibs and off school
DS2 Ditto to DS1, but is even more wiped out by it than DS1, big sad eyes, pale skin.
DD2, Really high fever on Sun night, nose CONSTANTLY streaming thickish yuck, no cough, took her to doc who pronounced a virus. But has now started coughing so if she gets worse I'll ask for her to go onto antibs too.

There. Did you really want to know that? I'm also desperately trying to prepare for my first job interview since 1989 and it just Isn't Happening. Aurgh

foxinsocks · 07/02/2007 09:58

Oh pph - was this the job interview that you'd had to swot for as well? gawd, you poor poor thing. I suppose there's no chance you could move it?

I am bored of it too - hate being sick and HATE being trapped indoors with poorly children!

Not a happy household chez peahead then.

I know what you mean by the "big sad eyes" though PPH -theres a big watery pair looking at me now .

It just makes you wish you could wave a magic wand and make them better. In fact I said this to DS the other day and he said " X (his sister) got a wand, I get it" -if only it were that simple.

sauce · 07/02/2007 10:02

poor you, pph! I wish I could give you a hand as I think I'm immune now.

Budababe · 07/02/2007 10:07

It really is a nasty does isn't it? And it's in Budapest too! Not hit us but some friends' DC's have it so am sure they will share!

DS had a nasty flu about 2 years ago and was very wishy-washy afterwards and I asked a pharmacy for a recommendation to boost him up again. They recommended Vivioptal which is a liquid vitamin supplement. It did help and I keep him on it in term time now and (touch wood) he doesn't seem to get anything really badly.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/02/2007 14:48

I really don't want my children to get it. Ds3 has had a cough for 5 weeks now and dd for 3 weeks, and ds3's cough became a chest infection at one point and he had ABs, but neither of them seemed anything like as bad as I am. Dd hasn't even had any time off school.

The funny thing about my illness is that although I have the shakes and shivers and aching and sweating, whenever I have measured my temperature, it has not been high. When I am shaking and can't get warm, my temperature is 36 point something, and when I take the pills and have a sweat, my temperature is bang on 37 - normal. It is really weird, as though I have hypothermia rather than a fever.

I do feel loads better today than yesterday though. I am out of bed now for instance! But about to go back. I know dh will have to go back to work tomorrow but I can't work out whether to try to do things today to build up my strength or whether to spend as much time as possible in bed.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/02/2007 14:50

Oh and I woke up today with a mouth ulcer which is agony. What should I do about that anyone? eg what is a good food to eat?

ledodgy · 07/02/2007 14:53

My two have chicken pox and this is the third week i've been stuck in with them i've not been well either but am feeling much better now. Was looking forward to going to slimming world tonight and then have a couple of drinks back at friend's house but just spoke to dp and he doesn't feel well and has an hour and a half drive home so can't look after children a she will be too ill/knackered. Looks like i'll be stuck in.

foxinsocks · 07/02/2007 15:58

mine started with those mouth ulcers DG. I wish I hadn't said I was feeling better because I went back to sleep this afternoon and woke up with a really high temp and shivers again ggrrrr.

You can get stuff from the chemist for the ulcers but foodwise - avoid the tomato based sauces and up anything with zinc and vitB in (so peas for the zinc, not sure what vitB is in) - I'm taking Floradix (the iron based herbal tonic thing) and I think that's helping.

hmmmm dd has started with a vage loose and untroubling phlegmy cough and seems very tired
Is this the start one wonders?

PrincessPeaHead · 07/02/2007 16:04

well I was called to pick up dd1 from school at 12.30 today so she is feeling horrid with sore ears again!
Have told the school that half term starts now for us - I think we will just hunker down and try and recover.

well remembered foxy - yup, am trying to cram but it is impossible during the day with everyone here, and for the last 2 nights we have had no power (substation problem) and it is impossible to do anything by candlelight! I'm DOOMED

dumbledoresgirl - many commiserations, mouth ulcers are SO horrible.

carlsberg · 07/02/2007 16:20

ds1 13 has just come home from school achy and hot. He says he feels like he has a hammer in his head. He is never ill and hasn't been to the Drs or had a day off school ill in years so it is really unusual to see him like this.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/02/2007 19:24

Yes I discovered tomatoes were a bad idea when I had tomato soup for lunch. Would ice cream be any good, just from the soothing point of view?

Back to bed. Just getting up makes me come over light headed. And I have horrible pains in my chest when I cough. And dh is definitely going to work tomorrow - I am going to be a wreck.

foxinsocks · 07/02/2007 20:10

oh DG - I have those stabbing pains in my chest when I cough (in fact, it feels like someone is sitting on my chest when I breathe ggrrr). Much sympathies. Are you taking nurofen/lemsip - they really do help.

Yes, ice cream, milkshakes - also avoid anything that goes into pieces in your mouth (like toast where a little bit can get stuck by the ulcer iyswim). Normal mixed veg soup or chicken soup is Ok too.

Are any of yours at home with you DG? Can you lie down on the couch and watch videos with any little ones?

pph - what a disaster! Where are you with substations that cut out in the night??!!

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 07/02/2007 20:16

I am taking paracetamol and ibuprofen although the paracetamol seems to be doing enough by itself right now. Yesterday was awful - such aching and pricking pains in my head that I had to take everything I could just to kid myself I was doing all I could.

Now the pain and aching has more or less gone but I am so whoozy.

Yes, I have one little one still at home. My three older children go to school by themselves anyway so if I only had them, it would just be a case of seeing them off in the morning and then doing them some tea in the evening. But with my youngest, I have to take him to playgroup, fetch him again at lunchtime, be there for him all afternoon, etc. It is making me break out in a sweat just thinking about it.

But apparently it might snow. Hmmm I wonder how much there would have to be for dh to not be able to get to work tomorrow?

nulnulcat · 07/02/2007 20:22

dd has cold and chest infection and on top of that she got a really nasty bout of chicken pox. dp has a cold (my term) triple pneumonia with complications (guess who's term!) and no need to tell you who is the worst patient!

DumbledoresGirl · 08/02/2007 08:13

Help help! Dh has left for work and I am in charge. I really do not feel up to this. Still sweating, aches and horrid pin prick pains in my legs and head. I can't remember ever feeling so bad since being a mother.

JARM · 08/02/2007 08:15

Ive got it too. Had it since sunday night.

The girls have just come down with temps, snotty noses and hacking coughs.

DH seems to be the only one escaping it at the moment...... thank the lord he is off work.

Olbas oil in abundance here.

foxinsocks · 08/02/2007 10:26

oh no, lots of people with it!

I had a dreadful night (virtually no sleep at all) but weirdly, feel a bit better now I'm up this morning. I've starting coughing up lots of phlegm so hopefully, my chest will start to get better now and I think my temp is finally starting to fall (touch wood) - was very hot in the night.

Dd said she felt ill last night but both seemed OK this morning though I was worried about them getting soaked and freezing in the snow this morning (not that I would normally worry but ds has only just recovered and has that nasty thick green snot pouring out of his nose!).

OP posts:
footinslug · 08/02/2007 13:22

dd sent home from school - she's got those big black rings around her eyes and looks drawn and pale so I imagine she'll be off till next week.

Couldn't see ds in the playground when I went to pick her up (I imagine he had flung himself in a pile of snow somewhere!) so at least that means he is probably on the mend!

DumbledoresGirl · 08/02/2007 17:05

Oh oh footinslug! Tough luck on your dd.

foxinsocks · 09/02/2007 10:11

so how are my fluey chums?

dd is in full flu mode (shivers, 41C temp, horrid cough)

ds is just very snotty (that lovely luminous green snot) with a mild temp but HOPEFULLY on the mend

I, finally, had a good night's sleep and I'm a bit stuffy but my voice has returned and I feel a bit better (although feel a bit like a caged lion at the moment!)
