For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Good morning 10 /10 ers. I hope you are all feeling well this Monday morning. I was wondering if people still want to continue with this as I would not like people to be thinking "ooh lord, a new thread, I suppose I had better post" each week. Let me know if it is still useful to you (or if not, if there is something else that would be...)

I am currently eating a really sour satsuma and scrunching my face up in a scary way. If you have seen how twisty my face is in real life anyway you will know how alarming this must be.

Other than that I have done something slightly daft to my back and my knee yesterday at the gym, I think by trying to beat my own time doing 1500 m on the rowing machine. They are only twinging so I am hoping all will be well again tomorrow... How are you all?

Not too bad this weekend - I went for a 4 yes 4 !! minute run yesterday. I hope to slowly increase this time - though I feel quite sore today. I did do another 7 minutes on the x trainer and some situps too.
Museli for bfast this morning - but no fruit with me for lunch! Missed the fruit market on Friday and will have tomake do with scabby smarket stuff!
I found my local (usually v. expensive) garden centre/local produce place has freezers full of frozen berries from the summer. Compared to the fresh stuff in smarkets now - they are v. cheap. Got a huge bag for £4. I SHALL be more organised next year and freeze loads when its cheap.

Morning all

I still think this is good Franny. I don't always feel compelled to list what I've had f&v-wise, but that's not the point is it? Apart from the fact that listing it often makes you realise how much (or how little!) you are eating. But I like the exchange of ideas for recipes, tips and new things to try. And it's nice to know that if you're on a bit of a downer there's always empathy, motivation and encouragement on here.

I was out in the garden again this weekend, trying to get it tidied up before the really cold weather comes. I feel all achey so I must have been having quite a workout! Then I made a nice stewy thing with onions, garlic, lentils, chestnut mushrooms, courgette and tomato, which we had with brown rice. Tasted very wholesome and earthy. And ds couldn't get enough of it, which really warmed my heart

Overrun · 23/10/2006 12:07

I alwasy like checking in Franny, its nice to have a consistent thread that you always know is there.
My fruit and veg consumption has certainly gone up with all this, so thats good
Exercise has fallen by the way side atm.

It was my dts 2nd birthday this weekend, so most of what I ate was sugary, but thats part of the fun Now I can have a really virtuous week

foulmoonfiend · 23/10/2006 12:28

Even though I haven't been on here for while, there are such lovely epople on these threads that I do like to pop in and 'see' you all, even while hanging my head in shame at my slippages....
As soon as I have finished this leftover birthday chocolate cake (ds's birthday on sat) I shall be attempting to clean up my act again

FrannyandZooey · 23/10/2006 12:43

Ah well this all sounds very encouraging. I like the camaraderie too

I have not exactly been a paragon of vegetable eating over the weekend. Something to do with a giant sized Toblerone that mysteriously came my way. I just don't seem to be able to get enough calories in by healthy means after having been at the gym. I know I discussed this before and people advised nuts, but I am so not a nut fan. Maybe if I try different sorts? I only really like the salty kind which I think are pretty bad for you.

OP posts:
tracyk · 23/10/2006 13:21

F&Z - have you tried toasted nuts and seeds? They seem to 'salty' up. or buy M&S salty ones - and wash some of the salt off - they are really tasty without the salt.
or what about avacados?
or just add chopped nuts/seeds to meals/muffins etc? I like to add them to breadcrumb type toppings.

FrannyandZooey · 23/10/2006 13:28

Those are all good ideas....I think it is partly psychological, I mean I could just have a whopping peanut butter sandwich or something, but I feel so ravenous and it feels like nothing will make the feeling go away, except vast amounts of calories. Chocolate works quite nicely in that respect

OP posts:
Papillon · 23/10/2006 14:29

How about scroggin Franny (trail mix) or whatever you call it in the UK to help you through the day.... you could mix some chocolate in that or some Yogurt raisins, licorice its endless really. I used to have it the living room, but it would be scroggin scramble with an 11month old!

As for coming to this thread... as Overrun said - nice having a consistent thread and as FMF said, with nice people. I have afew "homes" here on MN and it makes the place worthwhile in my humble opnion. I do know where you are coming from Franny (well at least I think I am) it has become quieter round here.

Pann seems to have run away but I just read this and could not resist pasting it here in case does read it, and or we can just cackle over it

"Pan started behaving really oddly after his op (6 weeks ago) - he started 'stealing' the children's toys and running to the end of the garden with him, up to 6 times a day. And then he started pooing on the lawn again (having successfully gone in his designated place for months)"

We have all had colds here so I am sucking back garlic, ginger, lemon and honey drinks.

Papillon · 23/10/2006 14:34

I should mention I found that piece about Pan on another MN thread

NotQuiteCockney · 23/10/2006 14:47

Hmm, I am not totally anti-salt. You do need some, and if you don't have a lot of processed food in your diet (particularly with that pizza place banning you!), then maybe you do need a bit of salt, particularly with the workouts?

You can get really nice seed mixes that come in little tubs, and aren't very salty, I forget the name of them, though ... our local health food store has 'em.

I made a giant bowl of salad and ate most of it myself, for the playdate today, so that's loads of veg I think (one carrot, one raw beetroot, two handsful of lettuce, big chunk of cucumber, big tomato).

NotQuiteCockney · 23/10/2006 14:48

I am now frightened about where Pan's "designated place" is. Maybe he's pooing on the lawn because he's in a hurry to go, thanks to the extra F&V?

tracyk · 23/10/2006 16:38

F&Z - I meant for you to ADD nuts/seeds/avacado's to your existing diet - so even if its choccie - add some nuts too.
Do you mean you need more calories to fill you up - or more calories for energy?

Papillon · 23/10/2006 19:03

You know when Pann said he was digging his garden all the time.

Yup

WelshBoris · 24/10/2006 10:05

this thread is dipping a bit?

get back on the avacados kids you know it makes sense

FrannyandZooey · 24/10/2006 12:06

I am shocked to hear about Pan's behaviour in the garden! Hope we can house train him a bit if he decides to come back...

Hope everyone else is behaving themselves, at least. I like all your ideas to fill me up and am going to try dried fruit / seeds / nuts after the gym tonight. Am having veg stew for dinner so should be easy to get 10 but I have got a bit slack about counting. Have had apple, grapes, melon, raisins and soya milk so far today: 5.

OP posts:
tracyk · 24/10/2006 16:57

Have had tuna and onion sarnies and an apple- have a long way to go before bed!

FrannyandZooey · 24/10/2006 20:14

I have had more fruit and been to the gym. I wish someone knew why my throat is funny after doing hard exercise. Does anyone here know?

OP posts:
Tatties · 24/10/2006 20:27

I always get a sore throat if I get out of breath running or whatever - no idea why. Is that what you mean?

FrannyandZooey · 24/10/2006 20:29

Yes, I think so. Can I avoid it? It is bothering me.

OP posts:
Tatties · 24/10/2006 20:38

Thinking about it, it's more in my chest I think...I don't know how how you can avoid it though. Here, have some of my lovely soothing parsnip, carrot, spinach and lentil soup, make you feel better

FrannyandZooey · 24/10/2006 21:36

Tatties it was a SUPERB POST, well done all round

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 24/10/2006 21:39

I have eaten three large oranges, two tangerines, three apples and a banana today, so you have to let me in

I also had two huge bowls of chilli (containing peppers, onions, carrots, black beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, cowpeas) with cheese on top and loads of bread and butter....mmm.....I could eat it all over again actually

Franny, my throat always burns like hell and tastes of blood after hard exercise (not that I do much hard exercise these days), I think it's because I used to be a smoker

FrannyandZooey · 24/10/2006 21:41

Urk

I did get the blood thing today but thought I must have imagined it

Eek

As I think you know I used to be a very heavy smoker

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 24/10/2006 21:49

Oh , if I did know that it had slipped my mind. I definitely get this every time I do exercise hard enough to make me sweat/heart race etc. I don't know if anything can be done about it... might ask my GP. Or google it.
