charliecat · 27/11/2006 11:58

If patches work for you you then go with it.
I did patches and got very manic when it washed off in the bath etc.
Your doing well keep it up!

aliceband · 27/11/2006 12:12

aah, just had a puff on my puffer thingy... very nearly relented, again.

Pann · 27/11/2006 12:13

not seen Nota for ages.

charliecat · 27/11/2006 12:21

Have you read allen carr at all alice?
Might be a good idea.
3 weeks is a turning point, you think youve got far enought away from them to safely have Just One without getting hooked. its a lie. Dont!

Pann · 27/11/2006 12:25

Alice - and refer back to CC's post of the Smoker's Vow. 8.54pm(I think) last night.

aliceband · 27/11/2006 12:27

thanks folks, got to 4 weeks earlier in the year, could be a bad time..like you say..

charliecat · 27/11/2006 12:27

Notasheeps absence i feel is ok. IYKWIM. Just too busy to post I hope.
Your liking that smoking vow arent you?

Pann · 27/11/2006 12:31

yep.

Reading that again, and "listening" to MB's voice of experience at the hospital with dh booted out any consideration of puffing again.

I felt very strong this time after failing so spectacularly in summer, but this time it justain't goona happen......

thank you CC.

charliecat · 27/11/2006 12:36

Yep you have to come have something to shake you to your senses in a moment of madness.
My thing was, its not gonna help is it. Yes the gerbils dead. But having a fag is NOT going to bring it back to life. It just means I will be smoking as well...and the gerbils STILL dead.

hertsnessex · 27/11/2006 14:54

i just quit (help of hypno, 2nd session next sunday) havent smoked for 29hrs! its a record for me!

cx

charliecat · 27/11/2006 14:57

Yay What did they say at the hypno session?

Pann · 27/11/2006 15:01

hi herts! Brilliant for you!!!

did try hypno myself ages ago - no effect, I'm afriad.......

keep posting???

hertsnessex · 27/11/2006 15:06

i had hypn a few yrs ago, and it didnt help.

hypno was 10mins of 'anchoring' and some home work (like writing your own obituary etc.....)

then a full hypno session next week.

seems to have helped.

cx

p.s. the first 48hrs r meant to be the worst for withdrawal......are they??)

charliecat · 27/11/2006 15:08

Physically, yes, it hurts to begin with? I sobbed my heart out as the want for a fag was so much yet I knew I couldnt.
Writing out your own obituary Bit strong!
If it works though, go for it.
Now, you need to not entratin another fag for as long as you live...simple ay?
ha ha ha...yeah right, its a mental battle but it cAN BE DONE

Pann · 27/11/2006 15:10

Depends what your mind set is.

if you think you are giving up something precious, then I guess it can be bad.

if you think that you have stopped killing yourself and avoided an illness involving continuos agony, then the odd pang will be nothing.

Depends entirely on your choice of thinking style.

imaginaryfriend · 27/11/2006 15:32

Well done herts! Yes, first 3 days are the worst, I always find day 3 to be particularly bad then it does ease off.

I do wonder about these patches though. Poor aliceband is still suffering cravings which she wouldn't be so badly if she'd done the initial cold turkey would she?

I know, I know, whatever gets you there, it doesn't matter. But I'd be interested to know the 'relapse' rate for people using patches.

CC, do you remember fionagibb being totally hooked on those lozenges?

hertsnessex · 27/11/2006 16:15

thanks ladies!

i know im doing the right thing. its very hard though.

Blandmum · 27/11/2006 16:18

For anyone wavering.

Dh had an awful night, not because he was so ill, but because a man in the same ward spent the night having his lungs aspirated. He has spent the day moaning in discomfort (in spite if lots of morphine) and making animal yelping noises.

Please don't smoke. However good they are, they are no-where near worth it!

imaginaryfriend · 27/11/2006 16:29

mb, how horrible for your dh. Has he got to stay in much longer?

aliceband · 27/11/2006 17:46

yes, the why quit website seems anti patches, as it prolongs the agony, but cessation advisor suggested that first kick the habit, then the nicotine, or something...whatever works basically.
have to read this thread properly, have not read whole thing so apologies there if i have not been tactful

MegJoshMum · 27/11/2006 18:47

My story.

I started smoking at the age of 15 that is 18 yrs ago
I decided to give up as my 7 year old asked me too & I always promised that if either of the kids asked me to stop that I would. We had some duty free cigarettes in the house from holiday so I told Megan that I would finish those and then would TRY to give up.
I finished the duty free fags at 10pm on Tuesday 21st November ~ 6 days ago.
Not to bad so far a few wobbly moments but am determined. Megan has made me a sticker chart and if I fill it up she is going to buy me chocolate with her pocket money so how can I start again now.
Will keep posting

lou33 · 27/11/2006 19:05

still no fag since friday night

i have wanted one tho, but my kids said they will grass me up to my other half if i do LOL

Pann · 27/11/2006 19:19

Ah the ruthlessness of children!!

Well done, still, on not lighting one up!! Keep thoughts at bay, and visit whyquit.com, and re-read the Smoker's Vow (last night 8.54pm from charlie cat)

lou33 · 27/11/2006 19:23

lol i know!

i tried to bribe them too but it failed

i have 14 cigarettes in my car still from friday night

i feel i am doing ok, i mean i am getting cravings when i really want one, but if i occupy myself with something then it goes away

imaginaryfriend · 27/11/2006 21:01

Ooh, it's suddenly so busy on here with new quitters, even ones who didn't know they were going to like lou!

Lou you're in such a brilliant position to quit. And although smoking 4-5 a day doesn't seem much it's still enough to compromise your health. there's someone on whyquit who got cancer smoking 5-a-day for 15 years.

MJM, your kids have got the right idea. If you see it from their perspective you would see how nutty smoking must look. And how horrible it must smell. Plus they all learn at school now how dangerous it is and how could you watch your beloved mum killing herself and not try to stop her?

aliceband, if the patches are helping you keep off fags, go with it. But make sure you don't get dependant on the patches and find yourself reaching for the fags when you try to cut them down.
