Hello

OP posts:
Pann · 26/11/2006 21:38

Gosh. I've only been away for a bath! But reading ALL of this really kicks in the NEED to never light another cigarette ever again.

Sorry if this sounds a bit pompous and preachy, but here goes....SEA

Therapy. - you may well consider you would benefit from therapy in some way, and we could all may be benefit from it. BUT..you definitely DON'T need it to stop smoking. IT's merely a habit you've created, and so can "uncreate". Therapy not needed.

Do you WANT to stop smoking? Yes. Why?

You don't want to be packed in with a load of old men who have given up giving up.

You don't want to smell of stale nicotine.

You don't want to hand over alot of your hard-earned cash to tobacco companies, to put petrol in the tanks of their executive's Jaguars.

You don't want to be lacking in energy, coughing, sliding off for a crafty fag etc

You don't want disturbed sleep.

You don't want s**t piling up in your lungs.

You don't want to have the control over your life given over to a nasty poisonous substance that you have to battle EVERY DAY.

You don't want that shit feeling that comes with being a smoker-who-wants-to-quit.

OK?

Need. Do you need to stop smoking? Yes. Why?

You don't need to die early.

You don't need to get older earlier.

You don't need to suffer emphasema, heart disease, Coronary Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, stroke, a variety of cancers, pluresy..no need to go on.

You don't need to end up bumming fags of your now-13 yo at some time in the future. And you will.

Need. Want. Not opposites at all, are they? Luckily, you both NEED AND WANT to stop smoking. The wants are things that you attempt to 'manage' every day. The needs are things which you can't manage. eg you can 'manage' a smelly dress by hanging it out. You can't 'negotiate' with lung cancer.

And what's good, is that you don't have to DO anything!! Absolutely nothing! So, from the time you put out your last cigarette, which you will, your life will become enriched, without the need for you to do anything!!

For me, and I do suspect for you, a real problem is changing your thinking about cigarettes, and the vocabulary you employ when thinking about cigarettes........

Pann · 26/11/2006 21:40

Woops!!

Thanks MB for the stick. I will use on myself wisely.

southeastastra · 26/11/2006 21:49

thanks this thread have given me a major kick up the ass

Pann · 26/11/2006 21:54

Hurray. The stuff here tonight is startling. I ave not smoked for 6 days and 50 mins, but there is no going back. Ever.

SEA - are you in a position to make a plan?? Stuff like "how to stop" tips aren't worth the paper they are written on if your mind isn't on the job, and in the right place. IT sounds like it may be?

southeastastra · 26/11/2006 22:01

i'm getting there, this thread has shocked me into things

shebnem · 26/11/2006 22:07

pann,
are you using any nicotine patches, such stuff?

Pann · 26/11/2006 22:27

Hello.

No, no patches or anything. I see them things as just smoking in a different way. Still putting nicotine in my body, but great if it works for others....."By any means necessary"

are you puffing and thinking about stopping doing it?

MegJoshMum · 26/11/2006 22:51

hi
I gave up being a 15 / 20 a day smoker on Tuesday last week. I have now been a non smoker for 5 days. THe kids have made me a sticker chart and I am dead chuffed.
Debbie

shebnem · 26/11/2006 22:54

hello pann
my friend is trying to quit and i told her the same about patches, that they will put nicotine to her body and in my opinion no real help. so why are they adviced in some surgeries to people who want to quit?

Pann · 26/11/2006 22:55

Go girl!! Well done you!!

Are you patching at all or just the cold turkey thing?

you must be very proud of yourself!!

can you post a bit on here? IT would help all of us if you do.

Pann · 26/11/2006 23:00

she!

probably because it does help some people??

you could get a bit suspicious and suggest that there is a whole 'giving up' industry that empoys people.....millions are spent on these interventions, but I don't seethe logic in them!!

it is very individual, isn't it? I do see it as still smoking, so I don't do it.

imaginaryfriend · 26/11/2006 23:30

I thought I would be sure to get addicted to the patches. Plus, even though this sounds crazy coming from an ex-20-a-day smoker, I didn't like putting something weird into my body. I'm awful at taking medicine even when I need it.

Pann · 26/11/2006 23:42

hi IF!! Are you well??

coming up to 1 week in......19 minutes!!

lou33 · 26/11/2006 23:49

ok i went out on friday and obviously smoked a lot because i was a bit pissed

and i woke up on saturday with a really tight chest from it, so i havent had one since friday night, but i really want one now

was easier over hte weekend with the kids and my oh here, but they are in bed and he has gone home

Pann · 26/11/2006 23:54

lou.

may I redirect you to charliecat's entry at 8.54pm tonight....

tight chest - another fag tightens the imaginary belt...

lou33 · 27/11/2006 00:05

i gave up for 12 yrs once so i know i can do it, but i dont know if i should go cold turkey or try and cut down a bit at a time

Pann · 27/11/2006 00:06

gosh 12 years!!

can you remember how you did it last time? it obviously worked!!

lou33 · 27/11/2006 00:13

the time i gave up for 12 yrs was when i found out i was pg with my oldest

im not going to get pg just to give up the fags!

time before that i picked a date and gave up for 2 yrs cold turkey

Pann · 27/11/2006 00:21

wow! impressive.

I did give up for 5 years..and then was at a concert, and was offered a cigarette, and thought, "yeah, just the one.."....16 years later.....

there is never just the one, is there???

lou33 · 27/11/2006 00:26

no but i am an odd smoker

day to day i smoke maybe 4 or 5, if i go out i smoke LOADS

but also if i know i cant have one, like on a long flight, it doesnt bother me

as soon as i know i can tho i want to lol

i want one now, am fighting the craving

maybe i will go and wrap the pressies for ds1 tomorrow, and see how i feelafter

when i gave up for 2 yrs the first time i remember doing it minutes at a time, i would say to myself i'll wait 5 mins and see how i feel, then maybe have one, then after 5 mins were up i'd add another 10 mins on

the craving would reach a peak then subside, and i smoked more then than i do now, so i am hoping i can use the same technique

Pann · 27/11/2006 00:31

yes alcohol and fags were inseparable for me.....

am still at the "conscious of taking it a day at a time" stage..had LOADS of efforts, esp. this year, but feeling I can do it. Reading stuff from MArtianBishop and CC's "Smokers Vow" tonight really put the kybosh on ever smoking again.

Pann · 27/11/2006 00:35

bed time. You will keep posting won't you?

night.

MegJoshMum · 27/11/2006 01:45

Yes, I have gone cold turkey. Didn't see ny point in giving up the habit and then giving up nicotine so decided to do it all in one go.
Not to bad so far. Will pst more tomorrow.
Debbie
