ok franny isn't here so I've done it. Cos I'm like that

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

am taking the kids swimming soon, then to the HE group which always invovles strenous activity somehow...then I think we will have a picnicy supper on our condemned allotment

Can I join in for a few weeks?

So far have had bowl of stewed fruit - does that count? Probably about 1.5 apples and a plums worth. Have walked the boys to dagis, about 40 mins worth.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 02/10/2006 08:31

welcome, welcome!

Your fruit is better than my marmalde it was yummy though...lemon and lavender...

OP posts:
MadameMorticiaMills · 02/10/2006 08:38

But surely that's sort of fruit? Maybe a quarter portion

The trees around here are groaning under the weight of ripe fruit. It seems shameful to leave it all to waste. Mind, the local wildlife are having a feast! So why should they get all the good stuff?

Can you eat too many portions of fruit a day? (without being silly of course)

Papillon · 02/10/2006 10:38

hello MMM, think the stewed fruit is fairly equal to fresh - perhaps compare it with canned. We of the yummy fruit tribe also say that we must remember our GREENS in the portions each day.

have rocking headache and oseopath a week away now to be exact! it makes me sick to eat so not alot of food going in, but good food at least.

peegeeweegeewoo · 02/10/2006 10:39

Is it possible to join this club, or would it be best to start a new one... (as there is no way I can go from virtually no fruit/veg to 10 a day, but need motivation...

HuwEdwards · 02/10/2006 10:44

What about a tin of French Onion soup - absolutely swimming in onions - does that count at all?

Papillon · 02/10/2006 11:00

Hallo you are all welcome What sort of motivation would you like pee?

1 onion is 1 portion - 1 portion is the size of your hand. Make sure you eat your veggies as well as your fruit.

I have just done some Yoga and have walked with buggy for 40 mins this morning. I have to go think of a Halloween name now!

VelvetMoonFrog · 02/10/2006 14:10

Hello. You've lured another one in. I've noticed these threads before and have now plucked up the courage to join you
Tally for today so far -
1 Grapefruit
1 Plum
1 Kiwifruit
1 Pear
Huge bowlful of homemade soup made with 1 tin tomatoes,1 rasher lean bacon, onions, leeks, courgette, celery, turnip, cabbage, borlotti beans, broad beans, carrots and a liberal splash of chilli sauce. It was yummy and I've got enough left for tomorrows lunch.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 02/10/2006 17:29

ooops..the title was supposed to say FRUIT AND VEG...was typing fast against waking up baby clock...

Apples, applesand more apples here - they are unbelievably juicy straight from the tree

fullmoonfiend · 02/10/2006 18:09

hello all and greetings to newcomers
I always struggle to get enough F and V on a preschool day. (I leave for work too early to cope with eating and then there is no time to eat anything until I finish at 1.30pm. Then I grab lunch and rush around doing town chores til school pick up. Am planning big salad for dinner though...
And will do better tomorrow at the office job (if I can keep away from the from constant supply of cakes on offer )

Don't gnash your teeth at them, hug them
(Are you seriousabout the placentas? Or should that be placentii?)

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 02/10/2006 18:32

yes I think you are right it should be placentii. That does sound better.

(this little revelation does seem to weird people out. I do apologise. I thought that was what you did with placentas. I have a friend who ate hers a la mr fearnley whittingstall.)

OP posts:
TooTickyTheAppleMuncher · 02/10/2006 18:40

No, no, I think it's cool - I felt awful about mine being incinerated or whatever (exceptionally after the midwife complimented me on the extreme healthiness of my last one) but somehow didn't quite have the (mental) strength to ask to have it (dp would have been seriously freaked out!) And then the ritualistic burying with exhaustion, aches, saggity tum, bemused children, curious neighbours....

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 02/10/2006 18:48

i have a picture somewhere of ds and various others at dd's placental burying ceremony. it was actually very nice. My PIL excused themselves, however. -bonus

i have long ago given up worrying what the neighbours think . although it must be said that theres been quite a procession of different people moving in and out over the years...

OP posts:
FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 02/10/2006 18:49

i put it in my birth plan, btw

OP posts:
MadameMorticiaMills · 02/10/2006 20:46

O.K. so today I've had -
a bowl of stewed fruit
medley of cucumber, carrots and baby plum tomatoes
a pear and a plum
a few handfuls of mung beans
apple and a pomegranate (more effort than it was worth tbh)
spinach and sweet potato
another bowl of stewed fruit
This is in conjunction with other food, though not much more!

No proper excercise, just a 40 minute walk this morning.

Pann · 03/10/2006 00:16

Hi all, esp. the newies!

Muesli and dried fruit, a MASSIVE Sainsbury's salad @ £2.99 (have worked a way to have the plastic bowl simply groan under the weight), plus peaches X 2 and a couple of bananas...smewhere about 6? But no exercise. Gyming it tomoorow with kick boxing friend/challenger...boy I do fight dirty..

VelvetMoonFrog · 03/10/2006 06:52

Fillyjonk - good on you re; placental burial (thumbs up emoticon), though don't think I could actually go as far as eating it, despite all the supposed benefits [nauseous emoticon]
Well, kept up the good work with an avocado,a satsuma then lamb pasta bake w/ cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage..... so intent on 'doing'the veggies and fruit I forgot to do my 10 mins exercise though Did spend all day running around though.

Papillon · 03/10/2006 07:45

Morning All

As we have neither apple tree nor pear, we buried the placenta in our Swiss heimort - Home place where we are registered. Found a nice bit of forest with abit of a view on a hill

Had a hearty spinach pie last night for dinner. VelvetMoonFrog your soup sounds very portion full and delicious.

Here is a nice broccoli soup with Pasta I discovered the other day

Italian Broccoli Soup with Pasta

I used dinkel tagliatelle broken up for the pasta.

tracyk · 03/10/2006 12:48

Hi - Can I join in please.
I have had museli with raw apple and almonds added, a kitkat and a seed bread with tuna and avocado.

Can I ask how much you all spend on fruit and veg a week and how often do you buy for optimum freshness. I usually buy stack on a Friday - but all eaten by Monday!

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 03/10/2006 13:33

hey tracy

i have say i spend a lot on fruit / veg. but tbh when I am economising i don't really do so on fresh food and ingredients.

I get most of mine from a veg box-Riverford-which for me comes on a Wednesday, then I top up locally during the week.

VelvetMoonFrog · 03/10/2006 18:57

Gaah. Was doing so well... grapefruit, satsuma, avocado, another big bowl of my soup, 2 plums.....but have just had fish and chips for supper ( I did have 2 pickled onions with it, does that count ). Mitigating circumstances.. I was on a mad 60 mile round trip to the dentist with dd and dh and we had to get something we could eat in the car on the way home as dh has had to dash straight out again to a meeting to try to save dd's school from closure.

As for exercise I'm off to do sit ups/jogging on the spot while I listen to The Archers

Hi Tracy, do spend quite a bit on fruit but most of our veg has come from the garden this year although there's not much left now, purple sprouting broccoli, cabbages, carrots, parsnips, potatoes, but that's about it.
