ok franny isn't here so I've done it. Cos I'm like that

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

I went to a body jam aerobics class tonight. I feel fantastic from it actually.

Not much fruit and veg today though

FrankenZooey · 05/10/2006 08:24

Cod you daft fish, you can eat what you want on this thread - we are not deprived of cheese on toast. Apple strudel would count towards the 10 a day anyway.

Yesterday was not my finest hour but today I am going to eat my full 10 and go to the gym. And finish off the Montezuma chocolates I got on holiday.

Papillon · 05/10/2006 09:27

Cod you are such a lurker I am beginning to think you are my favourite groupie

I am abit hungover today and busy with house guests.

Tatties it does sound like Fennel. If you need some ideas on how to cook it I have afew, nice finely sliced in a salad... The pointed lettuce maybe autumn lettuce which is abit sour... so just needs abit more dressing. Or could be chinese cabbage?

You read my mind Zooey, dont like the name either.

Tatties · 05/10/2006 09:51

Thanks Papillon, some ideas would be great

tracyk · 05/10/2006 11:15

I had a veggie omlette last night with peppers, peas and mushrooms. Plus snacking on dried apricots and cashew nuts in the afternoon. Then Tae Bo class.
This morning had museli with dried apricots and cashew nuts. Just munching on my feta and cress/spinach/rocket brown sandwiches which are sposed to be for lunch!
I got a subscription for my bday of Grow Your Own magazine. Very encouraging - looking forward to planning my fruit/veg patch for next year.
ps goats milk - not too bad - got the semi skimmed so not very creamy - only for in cereals anyway so don't really taste it. Will update once I have tried it in a smoothie.

Papillon · 05/10/2006 11:29

Tatties Here is a thread with some fennel ideas I found

www.mumsnet.com/Talk?rn=40811&topicid=1379&threadid=219908&redir=40811

TracyK have you tried Ricemilk? Very nice.

Tatties · 05/10/2006 11:43

Thanks for that Papillon. But I don't like aniseed so am not sure I will like it...Your salad idea sounds nice though, I will give it a go.

Tracyk, I have just been munching some cashew nuts too! They're addictive. I would love to have a vegetable patch, but am a complete novice at gardening. Do you reckon it's easy enough to do? Oh and agree with Papillon, ricemilk is a good alternative. I find it quite similar to skimmed milk.

FrankenZooey · 05/10/2006 12:46

I have eaten strawberries, grapes, russet apples, raisins and soya milk for breakfast. Oh and a satsuma. 6 so far.

Papillon perhaps you could be a Death's Head Hawk Moth for Halloween, but it still seems a little morbid for your persona.

Tatties I reckon your mystery veg could just be a pointed cabbage ; we are always getting them in our veg box and they are yummy. I can't bear fennel either (yet another thing I should have warned NQC I can't eat )

tracyk · 05/10/2006 13:24

Papillion and Tatties - I shall keep an eye open for ricemilk to try.
Grab a copy of Grow Your Own and it shows you step by step how to do it. Bit boring for the next month or so though as it seems only garlic, onions and potatoes grow in the winter. Tho they are talking about brocolli that will be ready in Jan time.
I will start small with some indoor herbs and maybe some broccoli.

beegee · 05/10/2006 20:25

I've been eating cashew nuts today...must be in the air...

1 banana
1 apple
some rocket and tomato salad
some raspberries...

5/10...could do better.

btw - i'm not keen on aniseed either but fennel tastes grrrreat rosted in the oven with olive oil - slice, drizzle oil and bake for about 3/4 hour. really good and easypeasy

Tatties · 05/10/2006 22:51

That's the one Franny!

Thanks for the fennel tip Beegee. I reckon dp will like it even if I don't!

Just made another carrot cake tonight - I seem to have an abundance of carrots atm! I made it with wholemeal flour, chopped dates and orange zest. It smells yummy and a slice is bound to count for a portion

tracyk · 06/10/2006 10:43

how do you make your carrot cake Tatties? Sounds yummy.
I bought some Granola from health food shop - sposed to v. low GI count. It tastes devine - so I'm not sure how good it is for me. Full of seeds and nuts - had it with soya yoghurt, little goats milk and chopped plum for bfast.
Out for dinner tonight and away for the weekend (my 40ieth!) - so not sure how I shall fare!

NotQuiteCockney · 06/10/2006 10:46

Pointed cabbage is lovely, shreds very well, makes a lovely stir fry or whatever.

I think I had my 10 yesterday, lots of veg at the co-op, and leftovers from the night before. Burgers for tea, which I didn't enjoy at all, fear I am really becoming vegetarian.

Big physio appointment this afternoon, lots of exercises. 40 minutes biking already, and will probably go running soon. Am missing running, haven't been for a week!

Overrun · 06/10/2006 11:45

Hello all, and all newcomers although I don't know if I still qualify as one of the old timers as I keep dropping in and out of this thread.
Still back on track today. I have had museli for breakfast and half a grapefruit, pasta with tomatoes, courgette, mushroom and garlic for lunch (we eat lunch early in this house, so as to get ds1 off to nursery on time). Then pear and a apple, plus half a banana. All this and it is not even midday yet.
Wavering on the exercise again though. Didn't go to yoga last night, was tempted to stay in by Autumn Watch

DrFrankenZooey · 06/10/2006 11:52

Good morning Overrun, I was wondering how you were!

I have a big fitness assessment tomorrow as it is 6 weeks ago that I joined the gym (well 7 actually but I was away last weekend). I am looking forward to it, but a bit disappointed, as I have been off colour for about 10 days and not able to do a full workout in that time. I think I could have achieved a bit more otherwise.

Tracy, Happy Birthday! When you come back shall we think of an exciting new name in honour of your 40th?

Tatties · 06/10/2006 14:13

Tracyk here is my carrot cake recipe:

6oz light muscovado sugar
6fl oz sunflower oil
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
5oz grated carrot (about 3 med. carrots)
4oz chopped dates/raisins/nuts - whatever you fancy!
grated zest of 1 large orange
6oz self-raising wholemeal flour
1tsp bicarb of soda
1.5 tsp mixed spice

  1. Lightly mix sugar, oil and eggs in large bowl. Then stir in the carrots, orange rind and dates/raisins/nuts.
  1. Preheat oven to 180'C/Gas 4/Fan 160'C and oil & line a 7inch square cake tin.
  1. Mix flour, soda and spice, then sift into the bowl. Lightly mix all the ingredients.
  1. Pour mixture into tin and bake for 40-45 mins, cool in tin 5mins, then turn out onto wire rack.

Easy peasy and tastes deeeelish! Hope you have a lovely birthday weekend

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 06/10/2006 19:51

am giggling at tatties using a pointed cabbage in fennel recieps

oh how the mighty have fallen

anyway, today, bllx all fruit or veg, really, 6 bananas, apricots, figs and raisins, tomato sauce with pasta...that really is it. Will have to eat some more fruit soon.

Did go to the gym for about 30 minutes, but interupted by dh with a childcare crisis....

I do confidently predict that i will eat quite a lot of the fruit of the cocoa tree tonight, and some oranges.

Tatties · 06/10/2006 20:43

When did I use a pointy cabbage thingy in a fennel recipe Filly? Are you suggesting I don't know which is which? Hmmmm Tonight I will be drinking some fruit juice of the grape vine and might join you in eating an orange

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 06/10/2006 20:47

let it not be said we don't know how to live, tatties.

OP posts:
Tatties · 06/10/2006 20:52

Damn right!

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 07/10/2006 08:37

oh my life is so wild and racy

and then I went to bed

Aargh have assessment at the gym this morning and am getting unwarrantedly nervous in pre-exam style, with added "what shall I wear?" angst as I fancy the bloke doing it

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 07/10/2006 09:02

have always had great difficulty finding nice gym wear

they seem to be shaped for 16 yo snake hipped size 8 (but really size 4) grrr g-women.

FrannyandZooey · 07/10/2006 13:11

Was it wrong to wear a padded bra to the gym?

He was very kind to me and admired my biceps as requested. I have put on a little weight which was a surprise (ok maybe not that much of a surprise after my stay in London, esp NQC's bread and butter pudding). And my resting heart rate has gone down to 64. Which I think is quite good?

Papillon · 07/10/2006 14:53

Resting heart rate very good all things considered Frannygymfloosy

Just been eating lovely big yellow plums. Not really been watching what I am eating and instead enjoying the soul food family has been offering me back to back. Fist my cousin, now my sister is coming from Egypt for two weeks which is great. We are probably going to be away together for a week in a Chalet, with cousin. Sister needs to build her strength up after tournament play in the heat and late nights up to no good
