Welcome to thread 8 (again - see below) of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

With apologies for confusion in thread numbers - an earlier thread was called part 7 but it was actually the 6th thread.

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

When I saw my gp on Monday she said it all looked good no signs of infection but I have had the icepack off for about 5mins and that burning feeling returns, I will keep an eye on it if it continues I'll go to the hospital and get it checked as the last thing I would want is an infection left untreated x

Ridingthegravytrain · 10/12/2015 13:24

Thanks addicted, me too!

The burning could be from the skin starting to heal and pull around the stitches. I had that. It sort of shrinks and hardens as it scars. Then you have to soften all the scar tissue after internally with your thumb. Such fun! Your Physio will show you how Grin

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 10/12/2015 17:10

Ugh Riding that doesn't sound pleasant. How long did it take for your swelling to go down? I don't feel swollen but there is literally no space down there so I guess it must be swelling?!

Wairing yes I wouldn't leave it long, just in case. Hopefully it's just the stitches pulling x

Ridingthegravytrain · 10/12/2015 17:23

IT took weeks or the swelling. I still had the bulgy feeling at 4 weeks post op due to swelling. All settled after 12
Weeks id say

And yes I could barely fit a finger, but it stretches pretty quickly once they've done the post op check and you use it again iykwim!

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 10/12/2015 17:43

Oh thank goodness that's reassuring, thank you!

gottagetthroughthis · 10/12/2015 23:13

does anyone know of anything healthy I could take that would make me go tot he toilet comfortably - getting used to the prune juice and it's not working atm 9that happens every now and then). Haven't had the op but get very achy and a bit sore down below if I don't go. any advice would be greatly appreciated. Blush

gotta magnesia 5.pellegrino It works really well

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 11/12/2015 05:55

Well hello, interesting thread. I have had a rectocele for 16 yrs, since my childbirth. Only finally got it diagnosed two years ago.

Couldn't work out how I would cope with weeks post op as a single parent so I've just carried on as before.

I try to digest as little food as possible, so only need to open my bowels about once a week. I've always had to at least splint, didn't realise that there were non surgical options. Wonder what the pessary things mentioned do, and what they could do for me?

Anyone else struggle to get a diagnosis for so long? I think I was just ignored as I have an eating disorder and depression, not really helped by attempts to avoid BM...

waiting4relief · 11/12/2015 15:35

It is an infection, I went to hospital because after my shower I noticed a smell and felt nauseous though I had no temperature I thought the smell was enough of a warning after the burning pain I have been experiencing the last couple of days. I have been put back on 2 kind's of antibiotics and he did a bladder ultrasound after I went to the toilet and sadly I am still retaining over 100mls after emptying my bladder. Have a appointment on Christmas eve as he wants me on antibiotics until I have finished healing so regular appointments from now on x

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 11/12/2015 16:44

Oh no you poor thing. Good job you checked. Maybe you should get some probiotics for your tummy and to prevent thrush if you are having loads of anti bis?

What did he say about the bladder, what can they do about it? I'm pretty sure mine isn't working properly yet.

Hope it gets better quickly x

gottagetthroughthis · 11/12/2015 22:17

waiting would love to try it but where would I buy it do you know?

OP posts:
waiting4relief · 12/12/2015 00:53

coffee it took me 3 gyno's to find out I had a prolapse, I think its who you see and how you explain your symptoms, a pessery can help in less problematic prolapse's or help you untill you get surgery. I am so sorry you have had to suffer so long before you knew what you were suffering from x

waiting4relief · 13/12/2015 02:39

gotta I live in Australia and I buy the magnesia from the chemist. Honestly it usually works in 8 hours and you normally don't feel crampy like other bowel movers can make you feel, If you have ever taken Ural for your bladder then this is the same kind of fizzy drink for your bowels. You put 3 teaspoons in a glass add water and drink it has a subtle lemon flavour, but without fail it works I take it before I go to bed if I haven't been to the toilet that day that way I know I wont run into any problems Smile

waiting4relief · 13/12/2015 02:49

hotbaths He said we might have to do something about the water works later on, don't know what he means by that as I think he hopes it will correct itself over time (relearn to fully empty). I have taken your advice and have got some probiotic'sSmile I knew when I went to my GP on Monday something was starting but there was no signs externally at that point for my GP to know so it took until fri for the smell to start so my advice for everyone is listen to your body and instincts as you know your body better then anyone and will usually always be right.Smile hotbaths what's your bladder doing at this point, can you sit to wee yet?

Ridingthegravytrain · 13/12/2015 07:37

gotta if you're in the uk buy milk of magnesia and take a laxative dose (directions on the back) works like a charm. I take it at night and it works by the morning

gottagetthroughthis · 13/12/2015 17:38

Coffee know what you mean I am nearly afraid to eat!! I am absolutely brilliant until I need a poo. Blush I have thought t myself don't eat more than is necessary but then I am 55 now you are younger!!

Waiting & Gravy have tried the milk of magnesia but 9 tsp are quite a lot although I still use now and again.

OP posts:
waiting4relief · 14/12/2015 02:41

I am sure the doctor said magnesia 5.pellegrino is milk of magnesia jut concentrated, hence the need to take only 3 teaspoons to work as a laxative and only one teaspoon to aid with reflux. I truly recommend as I am terrified of needing to go and it having any kind of bulk as the hematoma at the posterior does not like me moving my bowels at all, it causes me agony. When I first started on it I hadn't gone to the toilet for 5 days after taking it I had relief the next day, I took it everyday for over a week and it worked, I now only take it if I haven't gone that day Grin I hope after you find magnesia of some kind you will both be able to have a nice Christmas meal without worrying at all Smile

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 14/12/2015 07:50

Waiting how are you? Have the anti-bis kicked in?
I'm doing well, we have been super busy with birthdays so I've probably been doing to much and can really feel it. Sometimes it feels like that dreaded lump is back?!
Are you more active yet? X

waiting4relief · 14/12/2015 14:39

hotbaths I am not as active as I thought I would be by this stage, had a hard day yesterday for some reason after moving my bowels the posterior hematoma played up for the rest of the day. Some god news though the anti-bi's have kicked in and today has been a lot better I even did the dishesGrin Try to rest after a busy day as it will help keep the swelling down. How's your pain at this stage, are you still on something for the pain? x

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 14/12/2015 21:15

Waiting that's great the anti bis are working and you have managed to do the dishes! Don't do too much or they will assume you can do everything very quickly!

I've only been taking paracetamol when I'm in pain. I went to the osteopath today (I've had tailbone pain since giving birth with my first dc and was hoping prolapse surgery might help it) Last week I felt my whole tailbone move as a poo moved its way though it was very weird and really painful. The osteopath said my tailbone is now moving all over the place I suspect it's dislocated and she said I should see the consultant this week. I've no idea what the consultant will say but will try and sort it out tomorrow. After the appointment we went for a walk and the pain in my vag and bum got worse and worse until I was walking down the steet crying my eyes out!

Having kids has totally fucked my body, I know in the grand scheme of things I've got healthy happy kids and I'm not dying but sometimes I feel really hacked of and I can't imagine what my body's going to be like if I live to my 70's!

Sorry for the negative rant I will be more positive tomorrow! x

waiting4relief · 15/12/2015 01:04

HOTBATHS I completely understand how you feel. I thought ignorantly that I was the only one who's body just got totally wrecked during child birth (that was a while ago) But nobody normally talks about all the problems that can arise from bringing beautiful children in the world. My very 1st child stretched my stomach overnight (really) and I have so much saggy skin that is all crinkled hanging of me, she also ripped my clitoris right off (tore through the front, not the back like other people) over 50 stiches was needed, that was the 1st of 6 living children 1little boy didn't make it past 20wks and I delivered him normally also. I didn't tell my MIL about this op till last week (she's had 8 kids) she told me she has suffered with a prolapse since the 2nd child????? Never said anything to me about it all these years, she was not like us though as kegels helped improve her condition (uterine prolapse) My god I used to state to everyone , my body is stuffed it was not built for childbirth look at MIL she has had 8 kids and is fine!!!! Hotbaths its okay to feel a little low or angry about our situation, it doesn't seem right that our bodies are suffering so much for something that you would think should come naturally after all we were built for this process so why can so much go wrong.....Flowers I'm thinking of you and hope your feeling better today x

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 15/12/2015 06:39

Waiting I'm sorry about your little son that must have been a really difficult time for you all.

Your poor mother in law putting up with it for all those years, I guess there is a bit more education and encouragement to be open now but it's still very much not talked about. I know that as soon as my dd is old enough in going to teach her about pelvic floor exercises, I don't know why we aren't taught that in school, it's so important.

I have that really awful saggy stomach skin too, I mean really awful like people who have lost 30 stone. Your poor clitoris did they manage to put it back in good working order?

X

waiting4relief · 15/12/2015 10:26

Clitoris working yes LOL will be out of action for a while thoughBlush
I'm the same my girls keep telling me TMI but I wish I knew all I did back then to prevent or at least preserve my pelvic floor.
Our bodies sure do get a beating x

Ridingthegravytrain · 15/12/2015 10:57

I worry about the state I'll be in when I'm older too! I'm only in my 30s. It's Rubbish. If I could do it over is now jump at the Caesarian they offered. I didn't want it due to the recovery time. Oh the irony

gotta how are you getting on with your pessary? I had to swap the larger one as I was getting abdominal pain and rectal pain. So need an in between size! So frustrating

waiting4relief · 16/12/2015 07:13

I cant believe it I am still seeing red and blue bruises down there! about a week ago it was looking yellow and gray so naturally I thought that was the later stages of clearing up but these bruises were so sore last night I had a look and they are red and blue/purple, don't know if they are new or have always been there??? these are on the outside on the labia so they are not even the hematoma's that the doctor is concerned with. Some days the healing process seems longer than you expectedSmile where's the ice pack LOL
