Welcome to thread 8 (again - see below) of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

With apologies for confusion in thread numbers - an earlier thread was called part 7 but it was actually the 6th thread.

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Waiting that's great you are improving. I don't think you are doing too much at all. I've read on the RCOG website by 3 weeks you should be walking 30 mins a day?! I went for 5-10 min walk around the block today and that was plenty I'm sore and achy now.

I've been having a really tight chest for the past two days especially when I walk around, I'm slightly worried it's a clot and they say to go straight back if you have chest pain but I don't want to look like a hypercondricat. I think I'm going to see if it improves by Monday or call if it gets worse. What would you do?

Ridingthegravytrain · 05/12/2015 17:03

Gotta you can get the consultant to get the gp to write a prescription for the pessary that is what mine is going to do then it's much cheaper! They should be able to put it in for you if you're not happy doing it

gottagetthroughthis · 05/12/2015 23:20

Gravytrain thanks for the tip but I thought when I went to see her she would have even put me on a shorter waiting list for getting the pessary fitted imagine when she said £65!!!
When I went to see my GP she said if you get the pessary in we can fit it for you here when it needs changing but when I went and asked her she didn't have a clue and said I don't even know which one consultant has put in. Confused I am not impressed with her she told me to persist with the not being able to poo thing and at times I was in agony all bloated and bunged up.Blush
the only other person that I trust is my physio - she knows what she is talking about and she has a rectocele also so she knows what I am talking about too.
I have to go back to this consultant after xmas will ask if she can give it to me on a script and then take it to my physio and ask her to help me - it really did work I felt really confident with it and relief so it defo worth a try. hope you get the right one for you too keep trying xxxx

hotbaths If you are still having chest pain and tightness I would go and get it checked out, if it is nothing you will have peace of mind. But you don't want to do nothing and it be a clot because it is so dangerous. Please don't worry about what they might think, your health is what is important! Xo

waiting4relief · 06/12/2015 12:41

hotbaths this may sound like a strange question but since we had the same op your the best person to ask. The area between my vagina and anus is sore but I have noticed the last 2 or 3 days it is also hard to the touch, externally of course. I am saw there a nagging constant pain but I'm not sure if its a healing pain a stich pain or a oh no kinda pain. also on a more important note how is your chest feeling today?

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 06/12/2015 14:24

Waiting - thanks it's not too bad going to see if it improves tomorrow.

Yes I have hard lump too I already had scarring from childbirth and it just feels like there's more too where my perineum was restitched this time. Don't forget there will be internal stitches underneath where they repaired the back wall and all the scar tissue is probably forming now to heal over.

Are you peeing ok now? I'm much better but still an effort to go and get it all out. X

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 06/12/2015 15:07

Yes sorry it hurts too, all that area is tender, I would think it's totally normal.

waiting4relief · 06/12/2015 15:15

hotbath thankyou for your response I thought it was probably normal but it was at the back of my mind so I am glad I asked. I still think I am not emptying my bladder properly and I sometimes only pee 60mls even though I feel the need to go. Glad its getting a bit easier for you xo

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 06/12/2015 15:29

Have you had a period yet Waiting? Mine is really late, I felt like it was coming but never did??

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 06/12/2015 15:30

I think the pee thing will get better and better over time, especially as you think how bad it was e.g. Impossible after surgery!

waiting4relief · 07/12/2015 02:46

I had the mirena fitted which can stop your periods or make you spot continually, but saying that I don't get my periods due to breastfeeding except strange enough I got it once a week before the surgery. I am still bleeding from the stiches though, has yours stopped? I have a gp appointment this afternoon to check if my urine infection is back, Question I really want to take my gp a bunch of flowers is that ok (appropriate) for taking my phone app and wouldn't charge me just a little thank you don't know if that is appropriate doc patient behaviour?

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 07/12/2015 07:52

I think that's lovely but definitely don't feel obliged to, I'm sure your GP wouldn't expect it.

I was meant to have the Mirena fitted in surgery but got too scared because of some of the stuff I've heard about it.

No I stopped bleeding about day 10 luckily.

Fingers crossed your infection is gone x

waiting4relief · 07/12/2015 09:15

I didn't get the flowers for two reasons they had none at the local service station and I would of been running late if I went to another shop. Anyway she said it looks like I don't have a infection on the dipstick test but there was blood in my urine which she said she's not surprised since I am still bleeding a little. she had a look down there and said she can see my hematoma (anterior one) and its bleeding so my bladder will need more time to settle it is probably over active and sensitive due to this. she put me on stronger pain relief and longer lasting, hopefully I can lose the icepacks soon LOL
What was it that scared you about the mirena?

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 07/12/2015 09:50

That's great no more infection, I wonder if there is much risk of getting another one once the catheters are gone? I'm about to have a bath and paranoid there might be germs so I've cleaned it. Not sure if I should be doing that?

Those haematomas are buggers, it will feel so much better when it's gone and you're no longer bleeding. I was so glad to be able to sleep with no pads and get some fresh air to it!

I've read lots of horror stories on here about the Mirena and I didn't think it was a good idea to potentially add any other issues into the mix when I was recovering. Although I'm sure it would have been good to have it put in whilst asleep. I'm not really sure what to do about contraception. We've used withdrawal for years but that was when it would have been ok to get pregnant. Now it's obviously not and I don't want any more. My husband was booked for vasectomy but cancelled twice so I guess he's not up for it... And I don't like hormonal stuff and get migraines and condoms give me thrush, so no idea!

waiting4relief · 07/12/2015 12:06

Hotbaths We were also using the withdrawal method but like you I was not as against the idea of getting pregnant. I have not had any side effects that I am aware of from the mirena to be honest if I hadn't seen it on a ultrasound I would of thought they forgot to put it in. That was fine cleaning the bath just rinse it well to make sure no cleaners are left and my piece of advice is add lots of salt and don't soak for longer than 10mins, the salt really helps sooth and protect against infection and if you soak to long it will start to dissolve the stiches. xo enjoy your bath

Ridingthegravytrain · 07/12/2015 20:47

Glad you're both feeling better. It will soon be a distant (horrific!) memory!

Gotta I've just seen my urogyn. Pessary been sized up from 50mm to 62mm so fingers crossed. He said the poo thing is due to the pressure from where the back of the ring sits on the bowel and there is nothing we can do (except remove it to poo) but we aren't going mad!

waiting4relief · 08/12/2015 07:45

hotbaths I had just finished telling my SIL & MIL that I am feeling so much better then this evening I got a wave of pain the best way to describe it was like a heartbeat in the ass (agony)Blush It has just started to subside I have no idea why or how that pain started has anybody had this kind of pain I was groaning in absolute agony...

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 08/12/2015 09:45

Waiting yes I have had loads of weird shooting pains, your heartbeat in the ass is description is awesome. I've no idea what they are but am guessing it's stitches tightening?

I'm glad you are feeling better. I am much better except I swapped Movicol for something else last night and have been on the loo since 5 am! I think I'm a stone lighter!

I had a tiny feel in the bath, OMG I think I've practically been sewn shut, there will be no need for contraception! I really hope it's swelling...

Gravytrain- sorry if you've already posted this but are you going to have a repair or stick with the pessary? Just wondering if the last repair has put you off doing it again?!

waiting4relief · 08/12/2015 13:49

hotbaths You can sing ''Like a virgin'' when your fully recovered LOL.
I was wondering when you had your repair anterior and posterior did they tell you if they were doing the repair all the way up your vagina or half way, because they explained to me they only did the repair as far up as they needed because they believe the recovery will be easier !!! and the chance of being to tight will be less.. I have read that some people had to begin gentle stretching exercise's with small finger size cucumber's (not joking)Blush to get ready to fit there husband but that was months into their recovery, but at this stage your over tightness is more than likely swelling as it is almost 3 weeks, for sure its still swollen. You are so brave I haven't felt in there yet I have had a doctor do it at least 6 times but I'm not brave enough yet Grin

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 08/12/2015 17:00

Oh bloody hell, I'm really not up for getting to grips with small cucumber fingers!! I wonder if they are green?!

No they never said how far up they went, but if yours was only half way I dread to think what full way up would have been like!

waiting4relief · 09/12/2015 07:31

They are green, because the doctor sent her to the supermarket and told her to buy small actual cucumber's Shock I think he had some other kind of device as well but then suggested cucumber's.

Ridingthegravytrain · 09/12/2015 09:16

addicted so long as the pessary works and I'm comfortable with it I'm going to put off surgery until my kids are both at school. In about 3 years. As I can't face doing it again with young kids who need me so much. And the pain is too fresh in my mind to even contemplate it for a long time!!

waiting4relief · 09/12/2015 12:39

hotbaths it is burning down there and last night I only slept for an hour, whilst asleep I dreamt I was in hospital and they where putting disinfectant or something of the like on me down there, when I woke up I realized I must of dreamed what I was feeling because god it burns. Have you lost anything that resembles a stich as I think a tiny bit of stiches was on my toilet paper it was not even half a centimetre long but maybe that's why I'm in such pain? I thought it would be way to early to see stiched come away....

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 09/12/2015 16:10

Waiting - yes I lost a bit of stitch in the bath the first week!
I'm not sure what the burning would be, could you have thrush or an infection? If it carries on I would check with them. x

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 09/12/2015 16:11

Riding - I hope the pessary works for you then. X
