Welcome to thread 8 (again - see below) of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

With apologies for confusion in thread numbers - an earlier thread was called part 7 but it was actually the 6th thread.

Here are the previous threads:

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Ouch, that's so strange I wouldn't imagine you would get new bruising? Having said that I am still completely swollen inside, have shooting pains down my bum checks and my perineum is so sore I can just about pat it with toilet paper so no idea what is normal by this stage.
It's a long process isn't it. I couldn't imagine having sex in two weeks time which is when then say you can start?
Are you taking arnica? No idea if it actually works?

waiting4relief · 16/12/2015 13:45

No I am not taking arnica, but ibuprofen and voltaren for the bruising and other pain medicine for the pain, still needing pain relief daily. Ice packs are still needed most of the time I probably only have a couple of hours without ice in a 24hr period. I seem so preoccupied with healing x

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 17/12/2015 11:41

That is a lot of ice packs. I'm not surprised it's taking a while to heal given all the haematomas you had.

waiting4relief · 18/12/2015 01:56

I have an appointment with my gp today just to check how everything is healing before they take there Christmas break, I will ask about the arnica.
How is everyone planning to do Christmas this year?
hotbaths sex oh my god I am sooooo not ready to plan that one out, my hubby gave me a little look (you know) he knows my position so he was only trying to be cute I suppose, but it freaked me out! I think you are supposed to be given the thumbs up from your doc at your post op check before you do any hanky panky LOL.

waiting4relief · 19/12/2015 05:09

I went to my gp app she explained I can expect to take up to 3mnths for the haematomas to resolve. She believes the surgeon is hoping my body will resolve them on there own, as if he removed them I would feel immediate relief but it would cause a scar on top of a scar that could possibly cause a lifetime of pain issues. She offered me stronger pain relief but I declined and said I will try and manage on what I am on. She said she is surprised I have had so many problems with this surgery, so am I ......but if it has corrected the prolaspe it will be worth this short term pain for long term relief x

waiting4relief · 20/12/2015 02:30

hotbaths Is your bladder working normally yet?

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 20/12/2015 08:40

Morning Waiting - how are you doing?

My bladder is better but it's still a bit temperamental it doesn't really work straight away if I've been sleeping and sometimes it stops flowing and then starts again?? How about you?

My stitches are really itchy today it's so uncomfortable and I don't think there's anything that will relieve it?

Blimey 3 months for you haematomas to resolve is a long time? Do you work? I'm meant to go back early Jan once I've had post op check. I can't wait to get back but can't imagine being fit enough yet, went for a walk up a hill yesterday and really struggled to get to the top was in pain and aching like an old lady! x

waiting4relief · 20/12/2015 12:47

Yes me too (stiches have been unbearably itchy)
Bladder has started acting weird today I want to go constantly but I am only weeing a tiny bit each time it cant be a bladder infection as I am already on antibi's and I am noticing when I stand up I wee a little more without control.... last night I had to gently hold toilet paper against myself to be able to wee..... I don't know what to do I have to see the surgeon on Thursday so I am hoping it settles by then or I can put up with it until then. Its so frustrating not knowing whats going on.
No I don't work I am a stay at home mum and care for my husband .
Are you all ready for Christmas I am hoping to have a good day (less pain) on the big day x

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 20/12/2015 14:33

Waiting it does sound like an infection and it could be even though you are on anti bis. I was on them when I left hospital and then developed an infection before I had finished the course and they told me to stop them and gave me something much stronger. I wouldn't leave it until Thursday if it doesn't improve or gets worse.

That's good you haven't got a deadline to get back to work, not that I imagine it's easy at home, it's frustrating not being able to do stuff. Is your husband unwell?

We are at my mums for Christmas which will be quite relaxing I hope! Have you got everyone with you? x

gottagetthroughthis · 20/12/2015 16:18

addicted & waiting I know you both have had a few probs but have been reading your posts and am thinking of you both at this holiday time and do hope that you don't have to do too much housework/cooking etc. addicted you say you are due back to work in January but see how you go first (depending on how many hours you do too). Also great that you are at your mums what a relief that must be for you atm!! Lovely!
Waiting I think Addicted may be right about wee infection - don't leave It too long.
Gravy what's happening with your pessary? I got mine removed and have to go back and see consultant end Jan early Feb so hope she can sort it out for me because apart from the poo issue Xmas Blush it was really comfortable and hardly noticable. Xmas Grin
I think at my age (55) it would be better for me with pessary and see what happens after that (here's hoping that it works for years!)

gottagetthroughthis · 20/12/2015 16:21

In fact here's hoping that it works at all! Hmm

waiting4relief · 21/12/2015 02:26

Thank you every one for your advice I am freaking out I hope someone know's if this is ok I have just found a piece of flesh attached to a stich on my pad it is smaller then a 5 cent piece but it is flesh is this normal? might have to go in for the bladder anyway but I hope someone has had this and can calm me down, I am totally freaking out xx

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 21/12/2015 11:27

Waiting I had the exact same thing a big piece of white tissue came out, I wasn't even sure a stitch was attached. I have some many odd things going on I haven't even bothered worrying about it. Don't panic but if you do ask the doc let me know what he says! X

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 21/12/2015 11:30

I did ask my best friend and she said I had same thing with my first dc and sent her a picture of it but I can't even remember that! I think it must be tissue that's come away as the stitch has.

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 21/12/2015 11:41

Gotta - thanks for your kind message. I work 4 days but commute and it's quite a bit of walking and stairs etc I'm sure by time back I will have healed way more??

I hope you aren't too uncomfortable over Christmas and they get you sorted in the new year. X

waiting4relief · 21/12/2015 12:31

Everyone you were all correct doctor checked and said the hole I could see is just the stich coming away and the little bit of flesh that came away was fine with a stich attached. You were all correct regarding the bladder infection also, he has sent a test of my urine to see if I need different or stronger antibis will hopefully find out thurs. Thankyou every one for your responses I really was scared for a moment there (thought I was falling apart in bits) LOL

Addictedtohotbaths1 · 21/12/2015 13:10

Oh great panic over! Hope the infection improves or you get the right anti-bis so you can feel better for Christmas x

gottagetthroughthis · 24/12/2015 22:23

Hope everyone isn't feeling too bad - Happy xmas everyone xxx have a lovely day x FlowersChocolateWine

MerdeAlor · 28/12/2015 19:20

Mind if I join in?
I've had a vaginal prolapse since delivering my DS 12 years ago. Now I also have a bladder prolapse and the beginning of a rectocele.
I live in France so have seen a french gynae. He has referred me for a whole host of unpleasant tests, including an active bowel and bladder exam. Looks like I'll be having a surgical repair in spring.
It's complicated by me having complex health needs but I'm keen to get the repair done anyway.
I've been reading through the thread and it's been so useful. It is tricky getting all the info from the surgeon with my less than perfect french.

gottagetthroughthis · 28/12/2015 22:55

Merde welcome Wine - although I haven't had the surgery! Yes this thread is fabulous - there was a French girl on here not that long ago frenchfrogbutt

From what people tell me (I'm in Belfast) France has the best health care in the world! I love this thread it keeps me upbeat and does help on the sore and downbeat days just to know that I'm not the only one. Smile

Gravy how are you getting n with the pessary?

OP posts:
Addictedtohotbaths1 · 29/12/2015 12:02

Merde - Bienvenue!

Sorry you have to join this club. But yes this thread is really helpful. Also there is a prolapse thread which is very active on the Patient website and I would reccomend, especially for people's experiences of surgery.

What repairs are you having?

MerdeAlor · 29/12/2015 20:14

French healthcare is well funded but often based on out dated ideas. Definitely not the best in the world. My DS has autism and France has very little understanding of that.

Not entirely sure what surgery I'm having. I think it's a mesh to reattach the muscles and lift up the uterus and bowel, then a second sugery to insert a band to lift the bladder. All to be confirmed once I've had all the tests.
I feel pretty ignorant at this stage, so need to learn a lot more in the next month so I can have any questions answered at the next gynae appointment.
