As discussed, a new thread for people who want a bit of a boost to their health. The suggested rules are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEG EVERY DAY

(if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion)

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY

(can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more)

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being.

Sign up below and if we enjoy it I will start a new thread each Monday. Post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Useful info here about what constitutes a portion of fruit or vegetables.

I've had muesli, and that's it. More later no doubt. I'm making "cold squash salad", only I use it as a dip.

Bit of a rubbish day planned, in-laws, packing, general stress.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 12:13

And yes, 23 is a bit young. I suspect he doesn't know what Carry On is, either.

FrannyandZooey · 12/08/2006 13:07

He can learn, NQC

Overrun, I would think 10 minutes of something intensive woul easily make your muscles ache the next day if you are not used to it.

I have walked to a book sale (about 10 mins) and walked back carrying two bags of books. It's crap really, but there you go.

I am going to count taking twins to soft play for a party, as I was there for an hour and half and literally run ragged. Chasing them, climbing, trampoling. All this with sore legs, argh!!
Now going to have lunch and am aiming for 3 - 4 pieces of fruit.
It's going to be hard to get to ten as I am out tonight at a Jazz festival and not sure what sort of thing will be on offer at buffet.
Ate virtually the whole try of cucumber and carrot sticks at this childrens party that I took the twins to, predictably the kids bypassed them in favour of crisps and cocktail sausages.
So I will add 2 portions to my tally now and thats gets me to five.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 14:18

Yes, 10 minutes of intense exercise might do in your calves.

I am sluggish today, and might not exercise. Will see. House is full of inlaws. Oh, I'll do pilates later, at the least.

Overrun · 12/08/2006 14:34

NVQ, do you ever do any video/dvd exercise programmes. I would be interested in any recommendations. I had a Jane Fonda one years ago, but I wouldn't want anything like that, mind you aerobics has gone out of fashion now

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 14:38

For aerobic exercise (as in, get the heart and lungs going) I'd recommend TaeBo. I don't use it so much now, too hooked on running, but I used to do them a lot, when DS1 was asleep.

For flexibility etc, I like Lynn Robinson's Pilates stuff.

(Ahem, and it's NQC, not NVQ!)

lislou · 12/08/2006 15:21

i had three kids in five years and my body told the tale!i was never fat but untoned ,wobbly and mis-shaped.i had no waist.i started doing a dvd called PUMP IT UP.it was the fist one with the eric pridz women in.looking at them i just kept thinking i can have a bod like that!!!it has great music.if u put it on through your hifi dead loud it makes u really want to get fit.i did it 3 -5 times a week for one hour each time and after about the first two weeks i had begun to notice my energy levels improve. ifelt WELL!i slept well too.then after about 4 weeks it really started to work.i changed shape.got fab legs and no more wobbly knees.great calves and ankles and my arms and boobs all toned up .my waist shrunk by 5 inches too.have a go at it.the first one though not the one that came after.i havent done it for a while now but my bod hasnt changed.its worth a go.my kids used to just sit and watch me do it and sometimes joined in.it is quite a high impact one but i did it and had never excerised before so u can too.try ebay for it.good luck!

Overrun · 12/08/2006 15:50

sorry nqc! I haven't heard of Taebo before, wil have a look on Amazon tomorrow. the woman from that video sounds too unobtainable for me

Panboy · 12/08/2006 16:28

Back early from Birmingham..it was my friend's 'civil ceremony' (the spare rib and meatballs variety) - dd unwell - AND it was unseemly to be stuffing myself with good things whilst she is pale and wilting....will attack the fruit bowl on the sly..

Frances - I wasn't race and ethnically monitored when I registered, so am reluctant to be so now!! Yes, you are being nosey.....

Will get the Breakfast Club out tonight, for when dd is in bed, as I am sure she will be early...I may be young'ish but I am fairly well culturally- referenced for your epoch (60's/70's/80's?)

Shocked at this assessment of my daily diet, thank you F.

lislou sounds very nice.

catch you later.

Panboy · 12/08/2006 17:02

dd asleep, though with a slight temp.(102?) and an achy stomach....see how she goes....

truly abysmal totting up intake for the week so far.....no more than 15?!!?

have joined a swishy gym last week, and have a personal trainer session on Monday morning, so hopefully some effective self ar*e-kicking shall be delivered...impressed with rest of exercises being done here, with one or two notable exceptions..but they know who they are, don't they?

is anyone else keeping a weekly tally, or is that just so anal?

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 17:07

I am not keeping a weekly tally. Only barely managing a daily one. (Today, muesli (1), squash puree stuff (2), blueberries (3), total of 6 so far. Might not manage much more.)

About to go for a run, though. Nothing like in-laws in the house to spur me on. I'm not counting running up and down stairs finding clothes for DH to pack, as exercise.

FrannyandZooey · 12/08/2006 18:16

LOL @ "frances"

OP posts:
Panboy · 12/08/2006 18:46

is it too formal, or just wrong???

just managed a banana..whoopie!

Booked in for my very first yoga session on Sunday..does this count??

FrannyandZooey · 12/08/2006 18:48

my name isn't really Franny, you know

but I like Frances much better than "Fran"

OP posts:
Panboy · 12/08/2006 18:54

if it's 'fess time, then is it my turn???

I'm not really 23.....but you probably suspected that anyway, as you are so perceptive, right??

and I like Frances as well...

Panboy · 12/08/2006 19:17

And does tinned fruit still count??

Charlee · 12/08/2006 20:04

FrannyandZooey · 12/08/2006 20:05

Charlee it rained all day here and I was thinking of you

Glad you had a good time and please sleep well

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 20:18

Hmm, so much for not running, went for about an hour, had very long run. Must work out how many km that route is. Feel good for having done it, anyway.

Had salad + pizza for tea, only couldn't eat pizza (chicken on it). Lots of salad, though, so probably 3 servings? At 9 then.

Booking in for yoga doesn't count as exercise. Actual yoga does.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 20:19

I suspect panboy is actually just Pan?

Tinned fruit counts, by the way.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 20:19

Oh, and we have booked a different accommodation for Toronto, an apartment, near a park. So that's sorted, at least.

FrannyandZooey · 12/08/2006 20:25

Oh good. Are you going on Monday? I hope it works out in the end and you have a good trip.

I wanted to ask you, will cycling make my legs muscly and broad or just skinnier? I have bought a helmet today and would have tried going out with ds on the back, but it has pissed it down non-stop.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 12/08/2006 21:09

Still leaving on Monday.

Cycling will give you big quads, assuming you're doing it properly. So your legs will bulge out a bit above the knee, on the inner bit, iyswim. It's the Vastus Medialis on this drawing .
