Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

Pretty amazed that two weeks running would have an impact on your leg shape! But I guess runners will develop calf and thigh muscle over time. Can't say I've noticed that my running club colleagues have particularly bulky legs!!

I've developed a sore right foot, so a furthere reason for me not to run. Am going to take it easy this week and next before pottering out again.

Gizmo · 26/04/2007 16:41

I would have thought, Wuxiapian, that it's unlikely to add much weight to your legs unless you are doing a lot of explosive anaerobic stuff: sprinting, basically.

My (slightly shaky) understanding of fitness physiology is that you build up muscle bulk through repeated heavy effort (weights, sprinting etc) but long duration aerobic effort will tend to strengthen your muscles without bulking them up. Look at the difference between John Regis and Paula Radcliffe, for example.

Tatat - can't find mapmyroute, can you do a link?

Pidge · 26/04/2007 19:16

I adore Gmap Pedometer

There's also Map My Run

Totally addictive! Though I keep hinting to dp that I'd like a GPS then maybe I'll stop compulsively measuring routes!

lapsedrunner · 28/04/2007 09:02

OK tomorrow I shall try to dispell the myth of my MN name . I'm running the Vienna 1/2M, it's part of the full marathon so a big race start/atmosphere. My first 1/2M since 1997! I know that 10 years and nearly an extra stone in weight are going to tkae their toll!! Fingers crossed for the weather, it's due to be 26'C today but about 21'C tomorrow.

Pidge · 28/04/2007 19:12

Good luck lapsedrunner - fingers crossed for cooler weather and a really enjoyable run.

No running yet for me. I've done something to my foot /ankle and it's painful to walk on. Didn't feel it in the marathon or for two days afterwards, so maybe I just pulled something by walking funny when my legs were so stiff.

sarflondon · 28/04/2007 19:35

goodluck lapsedrunner try not to stop for coffee and cakes on the way round. enjoy your rest Pidge

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 28/04/2007 19:52

Good luck tomorrow lapsedrunner!

glitterfairy · 29/04/2007 08:17

Can I join please? I have only just started running seriously and did a 5k race three weeks ago. Have entered two 10ks one in June, one in September and a half marathon in October. I am just off on my Sunday run. Good luck lapsedrunner.

3sEnough · 29/04/2007 08:29

Well done lapsed runner! I have yet to take the plunge - it's been over 13 yrs since my last 1/2. Hi Glitterfairy! Wuxiapian - are you sure they're not just getting more toned - i.e. the muscle mass is showing as more defined? They shouldn't be getting 'massive', but my calves are definately bigger/more toned than pre-running - having said that, the tops of my legs are vastly better than before running....I suppose they just match more in size now!

paddingtonbear1 · 29/04/2007 17:37

Hi all, I've not been on this thread for ages! Congrats all you FLM runners! My FIL did it this year and said how hard it was in the heat. We had easier weather last year!
Quokate have put a message on your other thread. I used to live near Birkenhead for a while, when I worked in Liverpool!
I haven't run for ages - tend to cycle instead atm - but my gym have put up a notice about a running club, so I might try and get along to that. I bet I can only run 100 yards now!!

Pidge · 29/04/2007 21:26

How did you go lapsedrunner?

Welcome glitterfairy - where's your October half marathon?

Still no post FLM running for me - dodgy foot / ankle persisting so I'm limping a bit when walking. Hoping it's beginning to get a bit better and I can run by the end of the week. Instead of running we did a 30 minute bike ride each way to friends with the kids on the bike - quite a work out even though I only had the two year old on my bike!

glitterfairy · 29/04/2007 21:34

HI Pidge Lancaster. My running is all hilly in Lancashire. I did 5 miles today of up and down! I am still fairly slow but I shaved three minutes off my 5 miles in a week so am feeling ok about it.

I have lurked here for a while and thought I would come out of hiding.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 29/04/2007 22:16

Hi all - I dragged my poor anaemic body through 5 1/2 miles today. Needed a short walk in the middle but it was OK.

Welcome to all the newbies

Gizmo · 29/04/2007 22:32

Ah yes, the sun is coming out and it's good to get out and run . No honest, it is...

DS1, DS2 and I did the Sawston fun run today. DS1 actually ran this year (last year, at 4, he decided he was too small and only ran the last 50 meters to the finish line) and I was really proud of him - he ran the first third of a mile like a little trooper before I had to stop him to avoid him getting too knackered. A cunning short cut took out about half of the distance but he ran/walked/stopped for a little rest almost 2.5 miles, and was very keen to show me how fast he could sprint to the finish. Very proud of himself and hopefully that will go a little way to make up for the boring business of watching mummy and daddy run races.

Pidge, sorry to hear you're nursing some trouble: what's your next target? I'd have thought that cycling would keep a lot of your aerobic fitness even if you can't run for a while.

Hope Lapsedrunner had a good day, as well...c'mon, let us know what happened.

And welcome everyone else: perhaps we ought to start a new race/target list.

JoPG · 30/04/2007 13:28

M other thought was that we should perhaps start a new thread now taht the FLM has been completed. We are up to nearly 900 messages on this thread and it is getting a bit unwieldy.
All those in favour?

lapsedrunner · 30/04/2007 15:36

Well I think I'm going to maintain my MN name and formally go into retirement from 1/2 marathons. I shuffled round in 2.05 (didn't stop for sachertort ) but didn't enjoy the experience at all. I definitely started too fast, which someone of my seniority knows is not a good idea. DH ran too and finished in 1.46.

The positive was that I passed 11km in exactly 60mins which is a good boost for a 10km I'm doing on 3 Jun.

New thread sounds great, just let us know what it's called.
