Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

OP posts:
sarflondon · 07/04/2007 11:01

Gizmo when you say eat all you can - how many easter eggs would that be? Should I start today?

Pidge Just done 12 miles round bleeding Hilly Fields so aching calves. Hooray last long run until the marathon. Have a great holiday

Jopg did you have a good race at Paddock Wood?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 11/04/2007 16:39

I've hurt my knee - it came on during my last run. I've had it before and the physio said it was an inflamed bursar. Can anyone remind me of any exercises or anything I can do to help it.

Wuxiapian · 12/04/2007 14:06

Hi, guys.

I posted on the Chat thread, but not had much of a response.

I'm just wondering what the best clothes are to run in. I really don't want to wear my cottons because I sweat so much and I'd be running about dripping wet. My worst nightmare!

So, what type of material is best or which places should I be looking in?

Hoping someone can help.
Thanks in advance

sarflondon · 12/04/2007 18:39

Hi Wuxiaplan - anything made from technical material drifit or similar. Aldi are just about to have some running clothes in stock.

SKSP - Sorry have had fine collection of running injuries but not that one yet?Have you checked the runners world bulletin boards?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 12/04/2007 18:52

Just found runenrs world earlier today, got some advice and ordered a strap. Turns out it may be an ilio tibia band strap problem, or something
thanks

Wuxiapian · 14/04/2007 07:53

I'm into my second day of running.
Just wanted to know, how do you keep the blisters at bay/treat them?

Thanks anyone who can respond

Pidge · 14/04/2007 21:26

Hi all - back from a week in sunny, sunny Pembrokeshire. Marvellous for taking the mind off the marathon! I only ran twice - a half hour potter along the beach, and a 50 minute slog up and down the seafront road. But did a bit of walking, so hopefully that was suitable taper activity. I definitely feel a bit more refreshed in general, but both my little runs felt very very hard, so am hoping I have a bit more zip on my 8 miler tomorrow.

How are gizmo and sarflondon?

JopG - are you out there - hope Paddock Wood went well.

StripeyKnickers - IT band strain is really common in runners. Get yourself to a physio and get recommended some good strengthening exercises and stretches.

Wuxiapian - amazingly I've only got one tiny, painless blister even after marathon training. Maybe I have tough old feet! But personally I'm putting it down to my very expensive (I think) £8 running socks. I don't like the double layer ones - it's hard not to get them wrinkled. But I have some thick ones with a kind of fluffy towel like texture on the inside.

sarflondon · 15/04/2007 11:13

Welcome back Pidge. Pembrokeshire sounds lovely.

I am really tapering now although don't feel as if I have done enough training to warrant it. I have had a really tight achilles which has eased up after a great sports massage on Friday. The masseur said that I need to do as little running as possible so I abandoned my plan for a 10 miler yesterday and will just do 2 very short 20 or 30 mins runs before the race. Professional advice to sit around - fantastic. Worth the £.

Pidge do make sure you are drinking lots of water from now on. I started guzzling at least 2 litres a day from Friday to avoid having that glugging feeling when I line up on Sunday. DO you know what the weather forecast is? I have some friends doing Paris today who must be baking. They look as if they will be sub 4 according to the on line tracking. Wonder where we will all be this time next Sunday? Definitly not heading for a sub 4 or possibly 5 in my case.. So excited. Are you?

How are all you other runners getting on?

Wuxiapian · 15/04/2007 15:20

Thanks for the reply, sarflondon. I'll have to do some shopping.

Really hoping I can keep it up. I started thursday, did 25 mins. Yesterday did 45 mins and today did 30 mins then a 5 minute rest then another 20 mins.

Do you think that's too much or is it good to run every day? I want to get fit and lose a few pounds.

Thanks again

sarflondon · 15/04/2007 16:21

Wuxia - I am no expert - I plod around. You are doing really well and building up your distance very quickly. I would think about building in rest days and increasing your distances more gradually - maybe adding 5 mins per run until you get to an hour and making each 3 or 4th run 5 mins shorter to consolidate. A lot depends on your age. If you are over 40 you should be making sure that you have 2 or 3 rest days per week. Running is fantastic for toning and fitness. Don't expect the scales to jump dramatically as you will be replacing fat with muscle which weighs more. I have gone down 2 sizes in my latest training ( my race shorts for the marathon are size 10 hooray ) but the scales have barely shifted.

Wuxiapian · 15/04/2007 16:45

You plod around? Bloody hell fire. You're running a marathon! One can only dream...

How long've you been in training and when's the big day?

I'm 29, by the way. Used to do a lot of gym training, cardio and resistance. Got fed up with it, though, and felt like a change so thought I'd try running. I'm aiming to run 3/4 times a week.

My only concern is that I'll lose what muscle I have now and turn all flabby.
If I continue to run, will my overall shape be a better one?

Any response is greatly appreciated

sarflondon · 15/04/2007 17:31

HI wuxiaplan - doing london next Sunday but hoping it wont be as bl*y hot as it is today. Training takes 18 weeks imho if you have some base level of fitness.

Ime running does give you a good overall shape, works wonders for waist and even upper body, arms and shoulders. Marathon training does seem to give you slim but very solid thighs so beware. Hill running is great for your bum. Maybe combining your running with specific weights sessions or pushups would deal with the parts running doesn;t seem to target like triceps. I will be the one with the bingo wings next Sunday.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 15/04/2007 17:44

Got some exercises for my knee and also spent £75 on some new Nike trainers which should help correct my pover pronation. They have good arch support and when I went out for a gentle jog today they seem really good.

Wuxiapian · 15/04/2007 21:56

Next sunday? Wow. You must be in tip top condition, then... and you can give me bingo wings over a flabby, shapeless, saggy arse any day!

So, Sarflondon, discounting your marathon training, how long've you been running and how old are you?

My knees have been really hurting since this morning's run. Could it be that I'm doing too much too soon or is it to be expected as I'm new to it?

TIA

Pidge · 16/04/2007 14:09

wuxiapian - my knees used to hurt when going downstairs in my first 6 months of running - I always took it as a sign I'd done a bit too much too soon. It's vital not to increase your distance too quickly - adding 5-10 minutes max to your longest run each week, and stepping back the distance a bit every 3-4 weeks, plus building in rest days until you're used to the regime. Running is great - but high impact, so your body may take a while to adapt.

I've always been pretty slight - 5'4" and 50kg - and running hasn't really changed my weight, but it has changed my shape. A friend actually commented on my bum the other day!!! And I have just bought two size 8 skirts, where previously I was more like a 10 or even sometimes a 12.

I'm 36 and have been running for about 18 months, since my second daughter was 6 months old.

Also heading for the marathon on Sunday. Getting pretty terrified actually! Sarflondon - have glass of water in hand, and am already on 1.2 litres for today. Plus had my last glass of wine for a week last night - a major sacrifice from me!

lapsedrunner · 17/04/2007 06:58

Yup, I can confirm that running won't change your weight, but you will feel a lot better for it. There is not hope of me ever buying a size 8 skirt like Pidge .

Pidge - most impressed at your wine abstinence. To be honest I know it goes against what the books say but I've always found a glass of wine on the night before a race useful for calming nerves (or excitement ) and helping me sleep!

Pidge · 17/04/2007 12:19

lapsedrunner - I was actually feeling a bit feeble, as some people I know gave up booze weeks ago! Definitely could do with some help sleeping though - currently am super excited and really struggling to drop off in the evening.

Are you running at all this week. I had been planning half an hour tonight and half an hour tomorrow, then rest on Thursday and Friday (though I cycle to work on Thurs) a 20 minute jog on Saturday.

Does that sound too much? It's what is on my schedule, but other people seem to be doing even less.

sarflondon · 17/04/2007 13:20

Wuxiaplan I am 42 and have been running for 4 years. This is my second attempt at running and it has stuck this time. Tried a few years ago and went to very alpha male running club with commonwealth medallists at it which put me off for a few years. If your knees are hurting you may have been doing too much too soon as Pidge says. Or it could be your shoes? Have you had a proper fitting.

Pidge it is entirely up to you but that does sound like a lot in your last week. I am doing one 20 min and one 30 min run but I always have last minute panics about tripping or hurting myself in training so am happy to limit runs. You need to do what you feel comfortable with. Everyone probably has last minute pangs about having done too much/too little in the final week. On a day;s leave tomorrow so I will picking up my number at the expo. Excited about lining up at the start and crossing the finish and trying not to think about the bits in between.

Gizmo how are you?

Pidge · 17/04/2007 21:43

sarflondon - in fact I've just scaled back my plans considerably. I did 20 minutes with my club tonight, have decided not to run at all tomorrow or Thursday or Friday, and probably not on Saturday, though my schedule has a 20 minute leg stretch. I can't avoid cycling 35 mins each way to work for the next two days, so I figure that will be activity enough.

I'm now in a panic because I can't find my marathon magazine, but I have my registration letter and know I'm at the red start, so presumably I just need to work out how to get there!?

sarflondon · 18/04/2007 07:10

Pidge - they will probably have more info on the start at the expo. When are you planning to pick up your number. It will be mobbed saturday so best do before then if you can.

Pidge · 18/04/2007 08:35

Planning to go in Friday 10am to the expo. I also need to pick up some carbo gels there as I've been disorganised and run out!

Where's gizmo!?

lapsedrunner · 18/04/2007 10:20

ooh, all this talk about going to the FLM Expo makes me very nostalgic . I did my last "long" run this morning before my 1/2M on 29 Apr.

hatwoman · 18/04/2007 22:59

Hi everyone. I've been very lax since Kingston - but will get my sorry arse out tomorrow. anyway I just popped by to say GOOD LUCK to PIDGE and SARFLONDON and any other FLM-ers. I'm kind of jealous. very excited for you - all your hard work coming to a head. really good luck. enjoy it!!!

Wuxiapian · 19/04/2007 09:35

Hi, guys.

I just want to know how you all stay so mtivated. I've been running around my local park with my MP3 player, but already it's starting to get a little tedious. I know I could probably use a running partner, but I run at 6AM and the only other runnners are usually in pairs and miserable-looking buggers!

Do you think 30 mins 4 times a week is enough?

Pidge, been for 5 runs now and my knees aren't hurting anymore. I only have blistered and battered feet to contend with now!

You gals ready for sunday, then?

hatwoman · 19/04/2007 11:28

wuxiapan - are you training for something specific? it's a very good way of keeping you motivated. even if you're not you can still do yourself a schedule - for 6 weeks or so - slowly increasing the distances perhaps. you can use this site (don't be put off by the fact the home page is US, just head east) to measure your runs accuratley. I work out my pace for every run and its very satisfying to see yourself get faster. I print out a schedule and put it on the fridge - then note down where I went for each run, my time and my pace.
