Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

OP posts:

Twink, that's really useful advice. I am looking forward to finding it less of an effort so that I can enjoy it.
I plan to build up to 10Km - I want to do the Blaydon Race next year, I am told it is really great fun.

Pidge · 29/06/2006 09:02

Busy - how'd it go? Hope you enjoyed it most of all.

Thought I'd transfer our 'race diary' from the old thread, so new folk can be inspired to enter something and add their details. I did my first EVER communal 'race' (more a fun run really) back in May - a 10k and it was so exciting. I'm due to do my next 10k this weekend - quite a few of us from this thread are out on Sunday actually. My target is to get close to my sub 52 mins time for the last 10k (it was a very informal event, and I have a sneaking suspicion it wasn't a full 10k, as I don't usually run nearly that fast!).

RFL Basingstoke : 28th June, Busywizzy
British 10K: 2nd July, Crunchie, Titchy
RFL Newbury: 2nd July, Twink, Mini Twink, Twink's mum

World Masters Orienteering Champs, Austria: 4th, 5th & 7th Jul, Lapsedrunner
Port Lympne 10K: 15th July, Dannie
Aegeriseelauf 14K: 21st July, Leo (maybe)!
RFL Gillingham:23rd July, Dingle
10k Regents Park: 23rd July, Pidge
Concorde Triathlon: 20 Aug, Twink
Newbury Triathlon: 3 Sept, Twink
HydroActive Womens Challenge, London -Sept 3rd , Mummydear
Windsor 1/2 marathon: September 24th, Pidge
GNR 1 October: Titchy

I DID IT

Having not trained for 4-5 weeks due to hurting my knee, I really wasn't that optimistic about how I'd do and my 1/2/3 goals were - finish the race without a knee injury , complete it in under 40 minutes, complete it in 35 minutes.

I'm absolutely amazed that I ran it in around 32 minutes (didn't have a watch so can't be exact). A lady I know came in a couple of minutes behind me and she finished in 34.22 seconds which is how I can guess my time. I'm so chuffed and what a fantastic feeling crossing that finishing line.

Here we are

Pidge · 29/06/2006 11:42

Congratulations - what a brilliant run!!! Well done you. Isn't it a great feeling to be out there running with others.

So ... when are you going to sign up for a 10k

moondog · 29/06/2006 14:22

Thank you ladies.
Right, outside it is.I have a cycle/running track at the bottom of my garden which stretches miles either way.
From nearest town to my house is 8k so I shall get someone to drop me off and see how it goes.
My father used to do this-reckoned running home gave one a great psychological boost.
I have been nervous of running outside, but you're surely right-it must be more fun than on a bloody treadmill.

The gym is closed on my usueal days (new machines) but we have just had a new deck put in,and there is a tonne of rubble, but I wouldn't let the workmen clear it.I want to do it myself.
Seems pointless to gym it when there is real physical work to be done.

busywizzy · 29/06/2006 14:24

Pidge, the very first thought I had as I crossed the line (other than 'thank god' ) was that never in a million years would I be able to run twice that distance.

But then I said I'd never manage 5k so who knows

Still feeling really chuffed with myself.

JonesTheSteam · 29/06/2006 17:08

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Well done busywizzy!!!!

moondog - 'of normal weight but have never been that sporty' - you could be describing me.

That gives me serious hope - thank you!!

quanglewangle · 29/06/2006 17:30

Well done! You are inspirational!

Don't want to complain about the weather after such a cold, dingy spell, but I just hope it isn't this hot on Sunday for my RFL.

crunchie · 29/06/2006 18:56

Guys have you lot heard about cancer research 10km

It looks really good. Loads of venues around the country all during Sept and Oct. Plenty of time to train, just pick a venue. Perhaps we could do a 'Mumsnet team' of individual runners at their particular race. We could get sponsorship from people all over the boards. They have a special 'Online sponsorship form' so people can pay directly via their bank accounts.

I fancy either Hatfield House or Kentwell Hall, but there are 30 venues. If 10 of us ran and we each pledged to raise £100 each, that would be £1000!! Between us there must be enough runners.

So the gauntlet is thrown down

My 10km is this sunday, so booking my next race for 2 or 3 months time means I will keep running.

Moondog there is even some in Wales, so no excuse
Dannie there are some near you too!!
Pidge you seem to run everywhere and anywhere so you'll be fine
Saggy, I am sure you will find one close too.

Who will join me

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 29/06/2006 19:12

I'm doing one of these crunchie - either Tatton Park or Weston Park - got to confirm which with my running mate.

Moondog - this would be ideal for you. It's men and women rather than just women like the Race for Life but it's not all 'serious runners'.

Sounds good to me crunchie - Then I'll have to do it.

sfxmum · 29/06/2006 19:31

well i posted a couple of times on old thread as newbiew jogger walker think am doing ok, think i could do 5k without much trouble but am terrified of entering as race even if knowing it would give me a boost - one day i guess
am finding it harder to run since have been back to work, 6am it is but its much harder when up with child a couple of times during night. no idea what to do about winter when it gets dark, i like running outdoors, so i guess it will have to be the road instead of trail
suggestions appreciated tia

futurity · 29/06/2006 20:32

Thank you for the welcome. I am looking at the 10K races..probably Audley End but I shall do my RFL on Sunday first...getting worried though..gonna be 32 degrees in Cambridge that day!

Pidge · 29/06/2006 21:32

Oooooh yes, I'll take a look at the venues when I get a mo' - I have a 1/2 marathon end of September and potentially another 1/2 marathon (!!!) end of October (that one's with my club). But a nice 10k might be just up my street, so to speak, as part of the training.

Speaking of which, must go to bed, only got 5 hours kip last night and have to persuade myself out of bed at 6.45am to fit in a little leg stretch tomorrow morning before dp disappears to work.

Pidge · 29/06/2006 21:32

PS Am getting a bit worried about all these mutterings about how hot it's going to be on Sunday. Rain dance anyone?

crunchie · 01/07/2006 20:51

Good luck everyone for tomorrow. Remember to drink loads!! I am planning where dh will be so I will be able to see him!!

Pidge · 01/07/2006 20:53

Ditto - good luck one and all. I am off to bed for an early night - given I'll be up at 5.30am with dd2. Have already stored 3 bottles of water in our fridge to take with me. Looks like it's going to be cooking.

Most excitingly - at the last minute dp has decided to come to the run with my girls. It'll be the first time they've seen me run, so I'll have some cheerleaders!

crunchie · 01/07/2006 20:57

That's great. I have got to make the sandwiches (early start for everyone!) Get some water sorted and juice some apples/oranges. The only thing I'll be able to have before I run is a smoothie, anything else and I will be so sick.

Dannie · 02/07/2006 12:00

Good luck Crunchie!!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/07/2006 12:22

Good luck - hope it's not too sweltering!

Twink · 02/07/2006 14:13

30 degrees & blazing sunshine, not the ideal conditions but mum, mini-Twink & I crossed the finish line in 45 mins (me for second time ) which was a huge improvement from previous years so I've a very proud 6 year old & a chuffed mum.

Unfortuntely the heat took its toll, medical treatment was required for some competitors before we'd set off and as we left, an ambulance was arriving, blue lights blazing. The friend I was pacing suffered classic symptoms of over-heating too so I was glad when we crossed the line & she could get cool water & go back to an air-conditioned car.

How were things for the rest of you ??

OP posts:
futurity · 02/07/2006 14:33

I survived the Cambridge RFL....and it was SO hot! Did it in 32 mins which I am well chuffed with considering I only started running in March. At one point I really felt like stopping but then I thought my legs are fine, I don't have a stitch, I am breathing ok..why do I want to stop!?! So I didn't! :-)
Thought I was going to pass out at the end so thankfully found some shade with DH and the kids and recovered eating sandwiches!

crunchie · 02/07/2006 15:38

The london 10km was a killer. The heat was opressive they reaconed 32 degrees. I set off OK 30,000 runner though and it took 20 mins to start!! However there was so much dodging around walkers (even in the first few 100 yards!) that instead of 10k I am sure I ran further!!!

I wasn't that happy with my time, my number 1 target was 55 mins, and I did 57:35. However I am going to blame the heat, I did drink loads, but it was v v hot. I am going to bring that time down next time

So Dannie over to you, what prize do you want ??

quanglewangle · 02/07/2006 17:29

Well that was hot. My leggy friend finished 5th out of over 7000! Wish I could say the same.

The first km was a doddle but plenty of runners had already started to walk. I did 2.5Km without stopping but then hit a bottle neck and found it hard to get going again. I walked 3 times for a couple of minutes and had only intended to walk once at the most.

I hadn't really got enough training in since hurting my foot, and though I did 5Km on the treadmill last week, and found it easy(ish) I am afraid it was a bit too soon and the foot complained and swelled up agin. So I was quite pleased to run as far as I idid today. It was actually hotter walking than running, walking didn't seem much more pleasant even if it was a bit easier.

Well, I'll do it again, if only to say I have run the whole distance.
I might need your support again, it has been really encouraging and helpful. Thanks, everyone!!
