Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

OP posts:
Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 23/04/2007 17:58

lol at you not capable of moving.

I'm marvelling at your time Gizmo on so little training - I'd be chuffed with that f I'd trained all year. Well done you!!

lapsedrunner · 23/04/2007 19:23

Amazing all of you....only problem is I find it's always the 2nd day after the event that's the worst for muscle soreness (i.e. the day after the day after IYSWIM)...prepare to crank yourself out of bed tomorrow

Don't know why I'm grinning, I'm "tapering" (well that's my excuse) for a 1/2M this Sunday. It's a 1/2M that's part of the Vienna Marathon, so I get the big race atmosphere but only have to run 1/2 the distance (whch is just as well , as I have done no where near enough training).

Pidge · 23/04/2007 20:45

Very well done gizmo and sarflondon. I was initially a bit disappointed with my time, but reflecting on it I'm just pleased to be in one piece and to have got round respectably.

Mind you I can hardly move today. And I spent the year in reception with dd1 which involved lots of sitting down on the floor on on miniature chairs and then trying to get up again in a comedy manner!

I'm now off marathon duty - I'd love to do another, but rather plotting another baby first ! And if I do ever get tempted I'll be hoping for much cooler weather.

Leoladyofleisure · 23/04/2007 21:18

Well done the marathon runners!!!

Pidge - don't be disapointed with your time its very good! I'm guessing it was really hot and with your experience the next one you will do a lot faster! What is planned next?

For those that don't know me or don't remember me I was a regular on this thread before I took a break from running to have twins! They are 2 months old now but the size of my norks (from bfeeding both) and advice from the doctor (due to horrendous state of my stomach muscles following the pregnancy), I'm not going to be running for a few months more but my feet are really, really itchy to get back into it and come and join you all here again!

Happy running!

Leoladyofleisure · 23/04/2007 21:19

Pidge, planning another baby ! How exciting!!!!

MadeForIt · 24/04/2007 01:59

Hey guys well done! I havent had chance to get online until now. I did 4 hours 44, i was hopin for 4 hours 30 but it was very hot and also our tube crashed into the side of the track and we had to walk 3 miles to the start! Not a great start! Still, it was a fab day and a brilliant atmosphere, will defo do it again. But I too am thinking about another baby! So it will probably be more like 2009 or even 2010!

Still, well done everybody!!!!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 24/04/2007 08:43

Nice to see you here Leo - I remember you being pg but don't remember the twins news! Congratulations - hope to see you back here soon.

Madeforit - poor you having to walk 3 miles before you even start. Another great time though, well done!!

florasarflondonmarathon · 24/04/2007 10:07

Well done Gizmo and Madeforit. Great times on a dreadful day for marathon running. Any news from benbenand me?

You have all managed such good times. I had a truly cr*p race and did my worst ever time by a huge margin- much slower than all of you and even Floella Benjamin (hangs head in shame). I am so disappointed as I did my most consistent and injury free training. Never mind. At least I finished unlike Haile Gerbeselassie....

Hello and congrats Leoladyofleisure. I have DTs too but they are much older. It is great that you are planning to get out running again. It will give you the headspace that DT mothers need.

Now we can all have nice shorter less all consuming running goals. What is next for everyone?

Pidge · 24/04/2007 11:03

I'm already signed up for a very informal 10k in May, my club is hosting a 10k in June, and then I'll be building up to the Windsor half in September.

Anyone else on for Windsor with me ... you have to sign up soon as places fill up by April /May. It's a nice half, albeit a hilly, well, not hilly but 'rolling'.

Pidge · 24/04/2007 12:04

Hi leo - only just spotted you there in my post-marathon brain addled state! Thanks for the good wishes.

Looking forward to having you back amongst the runners once your body recovers from the twins experience.

As you can see from my race calendar for the year baby 3 is not planned to happen till sometime next year. So don't get too excited yet! How about you madeforit?

MadeForIt · 24/04/2007 13:49

Considering trying to concieve for baby number 2 sometime over the next few months (eek!) Hopefully then, I will be back running sometime later next year and possibly do FLM 2009! Possibly think the marathon has disconnected my sanity cells!!!

Pidge · 24/04/2007 14:02

Ooh very exciting!!!

My vague plan is baby number 3 conceived either very late this year, or earlyish next year.

So no FLMs for me for a while. I figure I'll have to keep entering the ballot though, and just hope I get rejected for a couple of years, but I don't want to lose my '5 times rejected' chance in 2012 if that's what it comes to!

MadeForIt · 24/04/2007 14:44

lol pidge, good plan! Guess if you do get a place whilst pregnant you can always defer... Hmmm, very good plan, might have to follow suit!!!

DD just had the biggest ever tantrum over NOTHING! Think this is the terrible two's commencing... Must be La-La to be thinking about having another!!!

Pidge · 24/04/2007 14:54

no, two is more than twice the fun that is one!!!

am just hoping the same goes for three.

now, you marathoners, when are you next planning to run. I hear different things from different people, but had been planning two weeks of not running at all.

My big achivement today was biking to the station to get to work - took me 40 minutes rather than the usual 35 but I made it!

florasarflondonmarathon · 24/04/2007 15:06

at least a week for me Pidge -want to wait until I have that gagging to run feeling. Have sometimes run 2/3 days afterwards but heat really took toll.

MadeForIt · 24/04/2007 15:10

The Coach at my running club wanted me to go tonights session and 'take it easy'!?! I shall be popping in, with daughter in tow, just to have a chat about how it all went but don't intend to run until next week! Still sore!!!

Pidge · 24/04/2007 15:42

Can't imagine running anywhere right now - am hobbling about!!

My club have their post marathon party tonight - strictly no running for the marathon folks, only beer drinking and wearing of medals. Hurrah.

Quokate · 24/04/2007 21:39

Thanx 4 the invite Sarflondon though I've only done 1 week of training for Race for Life in June and am feeling humbled by your marathon discussions. However, I guess we all have to start somewhere . . .

Have just spent half an hour flicking through this thread and saw talk about Bushey Park in Teddington. Have only been there with dh and the kids - it would be a fab place for a run! Next time dh has to go to his head office in Teddington I'll have to sort it.

Quite a lot of you seem to be in the south of England or do you travel to Hastings, Winchester, etc and the other races mentioned? I'm from Wallasey on the Wirral - anyone nearby???

Gizmo · 25/04/2007 11:00

I used to run in Bushy Park, QuoKate and it is very nice. Also the run down the river towpath there is excellent, being nice and flat .

FSL, I'm sorry you're feeling down about the result, please don't let it put you off running marathons for good. It's ironic but these acts of God (like heat, bizarre injuries or a random virus) always seem to strike just when you're feeling really confident and satisfied that you have trained hard and will earn a good result: my poor DH had to drop out of Paris this year at mile 16, although he was in great form and looking for a sub 3.15 run. He'd picked up a virus from DS2 and didn't know anything about it until the race, when his HRM rapidly convinced him something was wrong. Running 16 miles on about 98% of his maximum heart rate was quite enough so he made the sensible call and pulled out. Gutted, though .

Yesterday was grim, leg wise, and I've noticed a perceptable dip in mood and energy levels since Sunday. This has never happened to me before so I think it was an exceptionally taxing marathon.

However, onwards and upwards. I've got a 'fun run' - more likely a 'fun hobble' - 10K on Sunday, where I think I'll probably take DS2 and push him in the BabyJogger. I'm only contemplating it because everyone else from the Hash will be doing it there, so there should be a nice large pub lunch after. Is anyone else finding their appetite is all over the place?

Pidge · 25/04/2007 11:47

Gizmo - your poor dp - and Paris was roasting this year wasn't it. Much hotter than London - I think it was 28 or 29. Two women from my club ran it and said it was like a furnace. So running in those conditions with a virus was never going to be good.

I've come down with a sore throat, possibly immune system dipped after London. Although I did have a sore throat last week too. Am wondering if I can throw that into the hat as another reason for not running as fast as I would have liked on Sunday . Rent an excuse here!

FSL - I went to my club marathon party last night and I think there was only 1 person from 26 who had hit their target, and I reckon she would have gone even faster in better conditions. Virtually everyone else I spoke to was slower than they'd hoped, some people were massively slower - like an hour or more.

Gizmo · 25/04/2007 11:55

Yeah, Paris was really hot, although because they start it earlier, you don't have to spend so long in the hottest part of the day.

Why do they start FLM at 9.45? It is a really late start by continental standards and if you have a hot day it's asking for problems.

Tatat · 25/04/2007 13:25

Hello all you seasoned runners, I am new to running and wondered if you could point me in the right direction for runners' websites etc? Mapmyroute is the only one I've found so far (which is fab, but could get addicted to planning routes of particular lengths just for the fun of it)
I'm starting of very small, bearing in mind that the last time I ran/was vaguely fit was at school 17 years ago and even that was reluctantly done. But have been amazed at how quickly the distance I can run is improving - last night I ran for 20mins comfortably, only my fourth run- I started off with a 10 minute jog and was seeing stars at the end of it- and I am so pleased with myself!
DH runs already and am concerned that our smalltalk of an evening may end up being running theory and nowt else

Gizmo · 25/04/2007 13:46

Hi Tatat,

My favourite (for practical content and scurrilous forums - a sort of sweatier, more abrasive version of mumsnet) is Runnersworld .

It's not bad as a magazine either, and if your DH subscribes you can probably access the online content through his account.

sarflondon · 25/04/2007 21:06

Welcome to the thread Tatat - great progress. Opinions on runnersworld are even stronger than mumsnet..

I am glad you had a nice celebration Pidge.

Gizmo - thanks for the advice. Going to stop sulking about the marathon now. Ihave to remember that it is a privilege to do FLM. I finished and beat Haile. Awful about your dp and Paris. He was so sensible to drop out.

I agree about the appetite. I couldn't eat Sunday and most of Monday - think I was saturated with water. Since then, I can't stop eating and am craving salty food so my salt levels must be depleted.

Oxford Town and Gown 10k next for me. I hate 10ks but it will make a nice day out for the family and the dss can do the fun run.

Wuxiapian · 26/04/2007 13:41

Just a quicky...

I've been runnung a couple of weeks now and was wondering, are my thigh and calf muscles meant to be getting so big?
Was aiming to slim down my legs!

Thanks in advance
