Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

OP posts:
Pidge · 19/04/2007 14:16

wuxiapian - 4 runs a week is great. I've not done more than that and I'm marathon training! Two of my outings are 30 mins, one is around an hour, and the 4th is my long run.

Anyway - great stuff. Couldn't agree more about picking a race to go for. Have a look at the race finder on Runners World

I lost all motivation after about 6 months and joined a running club and it has made a huge difference. I only go out with them once a week, but it keeps my running ticking over, plus it's sociable and you find out about local events etc.

Pidge · 20/04/2007 18:30

Just been up to the expo and got my number. Weather is looking BAD for marathon running. Oh well!

Look out for me staggering around: number 34315, lime green asthma uk vest!

Good luck everyone

Wuxiapian · 20/04/2007 18:42

Hatwoman, I started running to lose a few pounds, shape up and keep fit. I know running's probably the best all-rounder. Thanks for the pedometer site. I'm sure it'll come in very useful.

Pidge, I'm in awe. Thanks for that link. There's quite a lot going on locally. I just need to overcome the battered feet problem. My feet are covered in blisters and sore! Tut.

lapsedrunner · 21/04/2007 07:47

Good luck to all those running the FLM tomorrow

hatwoman · 21/04/2007 10:33

w - I don;t seem to get blisters anymore (my feet are clearly hardened) but when I did I used micro-pore. it's much better than plasters - you can put a whole load over a tender bit, it's more comfy than plasters and it doesn't rub off quite the same

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/04/2007 10:58

So who is running tomorrow?

Gizmo, sarflondon, Pidge.....anyone else?

Good luck to you all - I'll be watching on the telly!

I've discovered why I've been so rubbish of late. Seriously anaemic apparently. I've suffered before and can't believe it caught me out so quick this time. Having done 10k a couple of weekends ago I was virtually gasping for breath in the afternoon and had to take to my bed . Back on the iron now though and feel much better and will maybe do 10k tomorrow. You FLMers will spur me on.

And Compeed blister plasters are great BTW.

Themis · 21/04/2007 12:57

GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL TOMORROW !

Good luck to you all running the London Marathon tomorrow. You will have a fantastic day ! Keep those fluids up and make use of the run through showers !

Even last year in the rain , and drinking what I though was plenty of fluids before & during I was dehyrdated at the end ( wee - very brown !!)

I shall be watching tomorrow and just wait until you see the sign 800m to go !

All the best !

sarflondon · 21/04/2007 12:58

Good luck everyone for tomorrow and thanks for the message of support. Given the weather, I am abandoning any time goals. I am looking forward to the race and not eating pasta for a long time. So sick of it.

Sorry to hear about the aneamia Saggarsmakersbottomknocker. Get on the spinach!

MadeForIt · 21/04/2007 13:01

Hi, I'm running 2moro! eeek! Posted a thread in For Sale trying to rouse a last minute sponsor or two, not having much luck! Oh well! Good luck everybody! Get your caps on, vaseline on and fluid levels up! We'll be just fine

benbenandme · 21/04/2007 13:11

Hi everyone, I will be there tomorrow, plodding rather than running ... will be looking out for princesscc and kbear in the crowd at 7 miles!! Good louck everyone and enjoy!!

JonesTheSteam · 21/04/2007 17:11

Good luck to everyone running tomorrow!!

neolara · 21/04/2007 20:31

Good luck to all of you doing the FLM tomorrow. I am very jealous! I did it six years ago - what a fantastic day despite losing feeling in my legs for the last 6 miles and being on the brink of tears for the last two. It's an amazing thing you are all doing.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/04/2007 16:19

Hope everyone is over the line safe and sound and not too knackered!!

Was thinking of Twink today, a founding member of the MN Runners Threads and all round inspirational runner. Where have you gone?

Pidge · 22/04/2007 18:23

Hello all .... !

I made it. But it was very very hot and so much harder than I'd ever imagined. I went off too fast, and really struggled from about 18 miles, walked quite a lot and stopped to chat to my family at 25 miles because it was a good excuse not to run! I managed 4.33, would have loved to squeeze inside 4.30 but just couldn't do it. But am triumphant just to have got round to be honest.

Hope gizmo, sarflondon, benebenandme and madeforit are all clutching their medals and putting their feet up.

Looking forward to some more sensible running targets for me soon!

glitterfairy · 22/04/2007 18:25

Well done pidge and all who did hte marathon today. I have lurked here and may join now the marathon is over.

sarz · 22/04/2007 18:49

Congrats to all marathon runners!! I will come back on this thread a little more, now i wont be so embarrased by my appaling running!! Hopefully in 2 years i will be typing on here to say i finished the LFM!!!

hatwoman · 22/04/2007 19:20

HOW WAS IT??? hope you all did ok and are enjoying a tremendous sense of achievement. and a huge glass of wine...

florasarflondonmarathon · 22/04/2007 20:13

Well done - Pidge - excellent time in any event but especially considering the heat. Wasn't it awful? You did so well to complete your first marathon in those temperatures.

Have changed my name temporarily to celebrate fact that I finished. Much slower than you though. Hardly any water at many of the stations. Thanks to all the Sarflondoners in Rotherhithe who were filling bottles out of water from their homes as the water stations had run out.

Great day but will stick to running marathons when it is likely to be cooler. My finishers shirt is massive! Could fit all the dcs in as well as me.

hatwoman · 22/04/2007 20:21

sorry pidge - I didn;t see your post! well done you!

JoPG · 22/04/2007 20:38

Many congratulations to you, Pidge and sarflondon. Hope you had a fantastic day and did not suffer too much in the heat. I hope your supporters helped to keep you going, and that you are wearing your medal with pride tonight.
Made me really want to go it again, but then I remembered those long cold runs in Feb, and I have had a rethink!

Haven't been around for a while cos have not had internet access for 3 WEEKS - aagh! That's what you get for trying to change broadband provider!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/04/2007 20:42

Congrats to you both. Bloody well done!

Great name Flora

hatwoman · 22/04/2007 21:39

I am really slow today. sorry sarflondon - totally didn't get your name change. well done to you too. did you know that you can loose 2cm in height doing a marathon? given that i'm 5 foot nothing it's obvioulsy a good thing I didn;t do it...

lapsedrunner · 23/04/2007 06:51

Fantasic achievement, well done

Themis · 23/04/2007 08:25

Well done everyone ! Great feeling isn't it ! Hope you're not too stiff today .

Gizmo · 23/04/2007 12:45

Well, in order to register the stiffness I'd have to actually be capable of moving...

Oh. Dear. God.

That was a long marathon. Congratulations, Pidge and FSL, I hope you are rehydrating in an appropriate manner!

Lessons learnt. 1) you need to do more than two training runs in the month preceding a marathon. 2) It helps not to run marathons in shoes that are older than your children.
Still, I got a finish in 4.43, more than an hour outside my PB.

I always thought it was going to be slow, so I paced it at 10.30 miles for the first 15 miles and seriously expected to run out of steam at mile 18, but actually got away with just three quick walk breaks between 18 miles and 24. To my amazement, once I got past mile 24, a little voice in my head said 'Oh sod it, let's just get this over with' and I covered the last two miles in just over 9 minute mile pace.

Mind you, I've never seen so many people in so much trouble in a marathon - the body count was mounting all around me - but it didn't spoilt the great atmosphere and good organisation. Looking forward to next year and the opportunity to do it properly, but in order to do that I'll have to rack up an autumn marathon. And maybe even buy some new shoes...
