Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

OP posts:

Well done everyone, I was thinking of you all running in this heat today and wasn't feeling envious at all. Futurity - well done on 32 mins, I did that on Wednesday evening and it wasn't close to this heat. And what a star mini-twink was, running in this heat at just 6 years old

How did Pidge get on with her 10K.

futurity · 02/07/2006 18:32

My friend did the London 10K today and he said it was too hot as well.

I really fancy doing one of the 10K's in September or October but don't know how many weeks it will take to build up to that (Audley End is prefered location but is 10th September and Hatfield House is 1st October I think)

crunchie · 02/07/2006 18:41

I am most likely doing Hatfield House with DH, and I have also challanged my brothers. DH hasn't run in a an age, and neither have my brothers, so I think3 months is a good amount of training.

But for you from 5k to 10k, I think you could do it in 2 months easily. To get the distance I went by minutes, so each weekend I did a slightly longer run, 35 mins, then 40 mins, then 45 mins etc That means you build up to 60 mins in 6 weeks. Or start by trying 40 mins at the weekend and 25 - 30 a couple of times in the week. What you need to be able to do is run for at least 60 mins non-stop and you should be OK.

However if you want to wait until Hatfield we can meet up

busywizzy · 02/07/2006 19:05

I've been looking at the Cancer Research 10K runs and have been toying with the idea of signing up for the Dorney race. It's flat so that's a definate advantage but I'm just not sure if I'm up to it.

It's not until the end of October so loads of time but I'm just not feeling brave. I was thinking about your advise Crunchie of adding 5 minutes running each week but I honestly don't know if I could run more than half an hour. I'm going to run that distance/time for a few more weeks, see how I get on and then decide. I still find that pretty hard work so would like to be a bit more comfortable before increasing what I do.

What a chicken

crunchie · 02/07/2006 19:24

Bizzy not at all. If yo are finding 30 mins tough then it will be hard going on longer, But do give it a go one day, what you will find is that the 30 runs become quite easy, HONESTLY.

Also you MAY find taht 10k is better as you hae more time to settle in.

I found today tough, but not due to the length of the race, but the heat. I have been running at 7am, which is far cooler, also I run in the woods, so at least 1.2 my time is in shade, today was not.

Still I feel great now, a bit miffed at the time, but there is always the next one!!

JonesTheSteam · 02/07/2006 19:42

Wow - am in awe of everyone doing these 5k / 10k races.

Hopefully it will inspire me, as I've only been running for 3 weeks!!!!

Well done everyone!!!!!

Pidge · 02/07/2006 20:55

Wow WELL DONE EVERYONE. That was HOT today wasn't it. I have never run in such temperatures. I was dripping sweat before I even started the run.

It turned out my 10k club race was actually a 5 miler (i.e. a bit shorter than the 6.2m I was expecting). I've only ever run one race before this one, and I was amazed to do it in sub 38 minutes (I forgot to set my watch, but the woman behind me said she was bang on 38m). And I was the first woman home from my club.

So a good day out, especially as the run was followed by some fun relays and then a fabulous lunch with dp and the girls at a friend's house in Ealing.

Now celebrating with a large glass of red wine!

leogaela · 02/07/2006 21:28

Well done everyone on your runs this weekend (and Busy last week)!

Hello ot all the new people joining this thread!

I haven't managedto run for over a week , bad excuses are thatI've had a friend staying and ds has been ill. I've been really grumpy and miserable, its got worse as the week has gone on and I know the main reason is that I haven't been running. I'm off work tomorrow though so will definitely go out wiht ds in the buggy! Can't wait for tomorrow now !

Its really great that this thread has taken off again, but I'm struggling to keep up with it already! Keep running everyone!

leogaela · 02/07/2006 21:31

Pidge - very impressive!!!! That is less that 5mins per Km! You are a bit of a star I think !

Dannie · 03/07/2006 00:02

Well done everyone! I didn't run at all today cos of the heat so I'm very impressed with anyone who survived a race.
Crunchie, please wait and see how badly I do before offering me a prize! I still think you'll win, especially if this weather keeps up!
I met a runner from the Brit Olympic squad yesterday who said he's stiff all the time too and it's not just because I'm old, and that's how I was injured by not warming up for the silly mothers' race at sports day when everyone else was fine.
Think I'll pass on a Cancer Research 10k cos I did a big fundraising half marathon in March, plus RfL, and everyone I know has sponsored me for loads this year already. Plus the nearest one to me is the week before the Great South Run, and my family might fancy a weekend that doesn't feature watching Mummy run.

JoPG · 03/07/2006 12:43

Hi, haven't posted for a while, but congrats to Pidge, Crucnchie and BW on your races.

My next big event is ...wait for it.... the Sport Relief Mile! Bit of a come down form the FLM, but nevertheless... I am accompanying DS1, so there is a good reason for doing it. He is really looking forward to it. Was going to sign DD2 up for it aswell, but she is only 15 months old and although she could probably toddle a mile I don't think it would all be in the right direction!

Anyone else doing it??

titchy · 04/07/2006 11:33

Thought I'd add my London 10k experience to the thread! SERIOUSLY hated it..... First 6k was OK, on target for a 64 minute run, then the heat got to me and I had to walk for a minute at about the 7k mark, then again at the 9k mark, so did it in 67 minutes. But I fouodn the heat so overwhelming and oppresive I totally lost motivation, and if I hadn;t had to run to the end to get my bag I think would have just given up. Also wasnn't happy that we had to walk from the end to the baggage drop place before any water was available - and very little there by the time i got there.

If the weather is like this at the end of September seriousy reconsidering the GNR.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/07/2006 12:18

Congrats to all on your races - the heat would probably have kept me at home. Titchy - I really struggle when it's hot _ i sweat buckets at the best of times and just can't keep up with the fluid loss. I'm sure the GNR will be different again - you'll probably be freezing!!

leogaela · 04/07/2006 12:29

Titch - that's a real shame. I had the same loss of motivation in the 10K run I did at the beginning of June, I suffered with the heat the whole way around. The problem is that if you don't train in the heat its a real shock to the system when you ahve to run in it.
I did a triathlon a couple of years ago (one of my first), it was arôund 35°, the heat was terrible. I walked most of the first 5K of the run and saw some team mates supporting taht told me I should finish it and that I would feel worse to give up than come last. I finished one from last and glad I did finish it!

Lance Armstrong said (not these words but something like it) if you have a bad race you will forget it the next time oyu have a good one. If you don't finish it you will never forget it and will always question why you gave up.

So well done for finishing!

As for there being not enough water and not close enough to the end, I would write to the organisers, its SO important that there is always too much and that it is available when you need it.

I'm sure it won't be so hot in September, don't give up your training for the GNR.

By the way, (if you understand german) feast your eyes on this - Tomorrow I'm doing a 1450m swim across the lake of Zurich !

Zurich lake swim

leogaela · 04/07/2006 12:30

The fun bit is the link to the Bildergalerie.

Pidge · 04/07/2006 12:45

Titch - well done you for finishing. I've also heard bad things about the organisation of the London 10k, which is disgraceful as it's a big popular event. Not enough water is potentially really dangerous on a day like Sunday. You should be so proud of yourself for getting round.

The GNR is the first weekend in October isn't it? The weather then will be completely different. And also I've heard that it is a brilliantly organised race and really inspiring. So keep going for it. I'm doing Windsor at the end of September and it's a midday start, so I'm going to be hoping for cloud, and maybe even a light drizzle!

Since my race on Sunday my left leg has completely seized up. I think I may have forgotten to stretch on that side, alternatively I'm blaming the relays which happened after the race, or maybe it's just a reflection of how unusually fast I ran - I've never gone even close to that pace before, so my muscles have probably gone into shock. Right leg is fine though, so I'm lopsided. Hoping to get out for a nice slow potter with my club tonight to give my legs a stretch.

Leo - LOVE the look of that swim! I have a friend who has done holidays where you distance swim between Greek islands etc, and I love the romance of not swimming in chlorine-infested pools.

crunchie · 04/07/2006 13:17

Titchy I know what you mean. What time did you start? It took me about 25 mins to get to the start which meant I had 25,000 people in front of me, some were walking 200 yrd into the race. At the end it was so hard to get to the water wasn't it, I had picked up a bottle at 5km, and didn't see any at 8km where I expected it, so I found that really hard. Next time I am going to go to the start by 8.45 am so I start early and teh water will be there. Also I will tell DH to be in whitehall with water, rather than wait. However last time I did it, it wasn't as hot and I was fine. Hwever I am sure there was only 15,000 people. They need to start people in timed pens or something as I couldn't bear all the dodging and going on pavements etc.

I cycled to work yesterday and my legs were really wobbly (28 mins each way) even with a gentle ride. SO I went out this morning (before 7am) and ran v v slowly for 23 mins. Thursday I will go a bit faster

titchy · 05/07/2006 10:45

Hi Crunchie! Yep I started about 20 minutes after the official start as well, so came through the finish line at about 11.00. Couldn't belive people were walking before they even got to Trafalgar Square!!!! Definately they need to start people in pens, although my friend said last year was even worse as there was no narrow bit you had to walkthrough to get to the start so everyone was tripiing over each other for most of the race! And wasn;t the gound sticky around the Lucozade station!!!

Haven't been for a run yet since, but plan to tomorrow evening, just a 3 or 4 miler I think, then a longer one at the weekend, then start building the distance up. Am going to find it very difficult if the weather continues to be so hot though - I'll probably end up not going out till 10 at night!

Pidge · 05/07/2006 11:01

So much for my gentle leg stretch last night. I'd forgotten it was the monthly club handicap, where you race 2 miles, setting off at intervals depending on your previous times, i.e. slow people first, speed-merchants last. Incredibly I won it! Bear in mind that it's rigged so that the slowest runners can win, so all it means is I surpassed my previous personal best. Also last night there was a very small turnout - 20 runners as opposed to the usual 40 odd. But I was dead chuffed.

Now I'll get a penalty for winning and a penalty for a personal best, and will start the next race even further back and will probably cross the line last!!!

Definitely going to make my next run an easy one though. Have done two in a row now where I ran like a mad thing.

crunchie · 05/07/2006 11:14

I ended up going out again this morning, more for the dog to get a walk as dh and i are both out all day. I felt lots better, only 20 odd mins. I will try to strech that on Thursday or Friday to 30 mins, or do at least 45 at the weekend. I am not doing the full 10k distance again for a few weeks

JonesTheSteam · 05/07/2006 11:55

I hope you don't mind me posting - can't compete with these 5k / 10k runners.

But I'm three and a bit weeks in to my walk / run plan, and I'm really enjoying it. Went out yesterday am and planning to go out tomorrow, then Saturday. DH can't believe I've stuck to it, even though it's only been three weeks - I normally lose interest in things very quickly, but am very determined to stick at this.

Today I bought a dress for the first time in years (a sun dress to wear round the garden, not one for wedding etc. which would normally require industrial strength underwear to hold post-baby tummy in), and I seem to have lost a couple of inches from round my waist. Am really chuffed with myself.

crunchie · 05/07/2006 12:24

Brilliant Jones

Please don't think you cannot compete with us, lots of people started training in March for RFL, and took 3 months to build up to 5km. That is about 30 - 40 mins.

How long are you out for?? If you are doing 30 mins or run/walk you will be around 4km already!! Once you can run more than walk over this time then you will be getting near 5km.

JonesTheSteam · 05/07/2006 12:26

currently on 24 mins - run 60 seconds / walk 2 minutes and repeat.

Yesterday was really chuffed as didn't feel a struggle at all. Normally get to about the fourth repeat and feel knackered!!!

JoPG · 05/07/2006 12:35

Congrats Pidge, sounds great.

Hi to Jones - hope you enjoy your runing.

Hot last night, but made it out for a 7 mile run. Was lovely once the sun went down and wasn't running along with sun in my face, which I hate.

crunchie · 05/07/2006 13:01

Well done Jones, another couple of weeks and you'll be able to run for 90 sec, walk for 90 secs etc.
