Here we are in Sports, I've been so lax about keeping up with anything outside our little thread that I'd no idea it was here - but have just spotted a cycling thread, so will be later to bed than planned....

Hi, I had my 10k yesterday at Port Lympne. The route was stunningly boring but by my watch I did 54:18, which was faster than I'd expected. More importantly, DS1, who's eight, beat his father in the Sport Relief Mile, and DS2 and DD really enjoyed the animal park. We went off to see rhinos and missed the official results but they're supposed to be posted on the website later today. And my knee hurts, which is annoying because I'm supposed to be running another 10k next weekend.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 16/07/2006 09:46

Dannie - well done on your time I have a knee problem too - I've barely run this week so it must be complaining of lack of use rather than too much!

crunchie · 16/07/2006 17:03

OK Dannie I owe you big time, I need to decide what to send you now

Well done.

Dannie · 16/07/2006 17:07

A new left knee would be nice

Pidge · 17/07/2006 09:56

Wow - Dannie - well done! Hope your knee is on the mend soon. What a great result.

I've got a bit creaky myself - probably to do with doing a long run yesterday, then driving 1.5 hours, then standing through 3 hours of opera at Glyndebourne, and then driving home again!

I have a 10k this weekend too - also dd1's birthday, so we're turning it into a day out in Regent's Park.

Leo - I'm guessing you might have the perfect excuse not to do your Aegeriseelauf on the 21st . How are you feeling?

JonesTheSteam · 18/07/2006 11:17

Hi everyone - still going out - although lapsed a bit last week due to just being absolutely knackered and not able to drag myself out of bed.

Went out yesterday am and when I got back I weighed myself and I've lost 6 pounds!!!

Am now the lightest I've been since having DD (who is 6 in Feb)

Am seriously chuffed!!!!

Going out again tomorrow and Fri am.

peanutbutter · 18/07/2006 14:48

well done everyone, your stories really lift me up and keep me motivated to carry on running. I managed to get to the gym today as mum came over and looked after ds for me. i ran a bit slower and did 0.8mile which is the most i've (ever!) run. i'm feeling really pleased because i've accepted that if i just keep aiming for small goals, i know i'll keep improving. it's so blooming hot though, i've got a head like a tomato with a wig on!

Pidge · 19/07/2006 09:59

Well done JonesTheSteam. Running is a great way to keep trim. And I read recently that it's a good way to get a flat stomach - which would be kind of nice, that's the one bit of me that's never been quite the same since kids.

And peanutbutter - what prize are you going to give yourself when you get to that golden mile? .

Last night was my club night and for the first time ever I did some speed work - running intervals, i.e. fast for about a minute, then rest, repeated 4 times, then a longer rest then another 4. And it was really good fun. That's one of the things I love about going out with the club - it makes you do stuff you would never do on your own. And they put people in pairs, matched for speed, so it didn't matter how slow or fast you run.

This week is the first of my 10 week schedule towards my first ever half marathon, and in theory I'm supposed to be moving to doing 4 runs a week (currently on 3). Have to see if I can persuade myself out again tonight for a real short and easy one.

crunchie · 19/07/2006 10:57

I am trying to run lots this week as I am on holiday next week. However I am thinking of taking my trainers!!

Pidge · 19/07/2006 11:18

Hi crunchie - I'm about to go on hols too - 3 weeks in Denmark, and I have to keep running to some extent given I'm aiming for 13 miles in September, but dp is muttering darkly about having to babysit the kids whilst I go dashing off on runs!

peanutbutter · 19/07/2006 11:58

A prize! now that is interesting. What could I award myself? tbh, i will be so elated to hit that mile mark it will be a prize in itself. won't do any harm to think of a nice pressie to go with it though

leogaela · 19/07/2006 13:15

Hey all, I've had a really bad cold and not managed to run for a week or two now , missing it badly. I'm not sleeping as deeply as I usually do, it could be the pregnancy but I think its more likely the lack of running or other exercise. Ho, hum. Hopefully will be better by the weekend !

Pidge - no morning sicknes thankfully just this bloody cold. And no, I'm not going to do the Aegeriseelauf! Taking my pal Paula's advice !
Good luck with the half marathon training ! And remind your dp that its only for a few hours a week, that you had to carry 2 babies for 9 months, bfed for 3 1/2 years (so far), plus time off your job, damage to your career...

Morning paper - sounds as if you are doing fantastically well! That's quite and achievment in a short time! Well done! I've been running on and off for years but still feel really proud of myself every time I go out for a run as well !
Looks as if your request for help to find a 5K near Somerset got missed. I don't know about things in teh UK, but the runner's world website lists loads of events in the UK.

Peanut, run slow, run slower than you think you can run and build up your distance slowly. You will always have some days worse than others. It sounds as if you are putting a lot of pressure on your self. Can you get hold of a heart rate monitor? If you run with it at your normal pace you will probably see how much too fast you are running.... oh, just read a bit further, if you are getting a tomato head you are still running too fast!!!!!

Well done Jones !

Pidge · 19/07/2006 13:38

Get well soon Leo. And take good care of yourself.

peanutbutter - hmmmm - prize? Night out with a friend including slap up meal?! Or what about a new item of clothing. I'm a bit sad and when I've reached various targets in the past I've gone out and bought new running kit. But maybe that's a good motivation too. I celebrated my first ever 10k race with a pair of new running shoes.

JonesTheSteam · 19/07/2006 13:49

Is that true leogaela (about going red when you exercise)?

I only have to think of the word 'exercise' and I go red in the face!!!

I was luminous when I came back from my run this morning!!

Don't think I'm going too fast though, I'm very pale and I don't tolerate being hot very well.

leogaela · 19/07/2006 14:58

Jones, I find if I get a hot red head and can't cool it down for a while afterwards I've run too hard for too long so got dehydrated and overheated. IMHO I think if you are getting a red overheated head then you are running too hard for a normal run. You definitely need to run slower when its so hot anyway. But go with what you feel, if you are comfortable and your running is improving and you are feeling well afterwards then you are probably doing fine. I think its a good idea to try running at different paces until you find what you are comfortable with.

JonesTheSteam · 19/07/2006 15:07

Don't honestly think I could run much slower!!!!

Have felt fine all day and drinking loads of water anyway as it's so hot.

I've always been the same - used to go bright red at school whenever we did something vaguely sporty.

Think DD has inherited it as well - she goes bright red after 5 minutes of playing outside.

We're both very pale and I also suffer from vitiligo so my skin doesn't cope well in heat!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/07/2006 15:28

Jones - I'm always beetroot too! It's just the way I am, I have quite a high colouring and blush easily. I don't cope well running in the heat as I sweat such a lot (pleasant isn't it?) and can't keep up with the fluids.

I've not been out at all this week - but have had a couple of sessions in the gym. Air con, lovely!!

Twink · 19/07/2006 22:34

I'm another beetroot and ever since I was pregnant (dd is nearly 7 now) I sweat for England, I thought it would go back to normal after the birth but no.

Those who know me would never sit next to me in spinning classes cos my ponytail acts like a hosepipe - bleaugh !

I've been running early this week to try to avoid the heat & when oh was complaining about the gym temp I suggested he tried running early outside instead but his response was, translated, 'no, I've seen the state you're coming back in - 10 times worse than normal which I'd never believed possible'...

Our running group was cancelled tonight due to 'inclement' weather !! They all went to the pub instead. Unfortunately I'd already agreed to go for a bike ride with a couple of mates so I did a tough 15m & a quick round the block run afterwards to try to get the legs used to transition before the triathlons I've (foolishly) entered. Smug feeling afterwards but pub would have been more fun !

peanutbutter · 20/07/2006 08:20

lol at Twink and her ponytail!

peanutbutter · 20/07/2006 17:06

I ran a mile today! I took Pidge & Leogaela's advice and ran quite a bit slower and it was easier and so I ran a bit further - my first ever mile. Doh! Why didn't I do that sooner? i'm so PLEASED!! . gonna carry on with small goals, but now I know i can do it by taking it easy. Wee heeee!!

Pidge · 20/07/2006 20:56

Hey - peanutbutter - FANTASTIC. Well done. Doesn't it feel amazing you achieve your goal. Many congratulations. What's your next target? How about entering a 5k somewhere?

I'm going to do a nice easy run tomorrow morning - maybe 3-4 miles flat and slow. Then Sunday is my 10k, I've set myself the target of beating my previous 10k time, which was my first and only 10k so far, 51m40s. Am hoping I can tag along with someone speedy from my club, and they can pacemake me round!

JonesTheSteam · 20/07/2006 21:17

Well done peanutbutter.

Good luck for Sunday, pidge!!!!

peanutbutter · 20/07/2006 21:22

thanks both, what a good feeling. yes, next "big" goal is 5k.

good luck for sunday Pidge, look forward to hearing how you do.

Twink · 20/07/2006 22:01

Fabulous Peanutbutter, well done !

Pidge, you're a serious runner in the making, honest ! Sub 52m for a 1st 10k is awesome, you'll be winning age group awards in a couple of years

OP posts:
Pidge · 20/07/2006 22:14

Twink - thing is I was half dead by the time I finished that last 10k, I really went for it, so I'm not altogether sure I can even match it. I'd be pleased with anything close really. Anyway, we'll see ...

Have not too hot and sweaty weekends everyone
