MummyDear - I'm in a club and they are wonderful.... a real lifeline when you are feeling unmotivated. My club is probably not in your area, but if you read about us and our philosophy and then try to find a local one with a similar outlook it might help. We are on google - Lincoln District Runners.

leogaela · 15/06/2006 08:25

A club is a great idea so long as the people are not too competitive and cliquey. its nice to have people to run with especially when you are losing motivation and also great to have people to go to runs ('races') with. There used to be a women's running network in the UK (sponsored by Reebok I think), those groups are really nice.
I am thinking of trying to start a women's running group here in Switzerland where I live. Anyone done this?

mummydear - I joined a club in March, after about 6 months of running (post latest baby!). And I love it. I go once a week with them - there are all abilities, and different lengths / speeds of run. And most people are very friendly. I find it just gives me a bit of variety, rather than always going out on the same routes on my own. Plus it's a brilliant way to find out about local races. For instance my club have a summer 10k series, that I'm hoping to join in with.

I heard Windsor was full too - so can't help you there, I'm afraid.

crunchie · 18/06/2006 22:55

I was thinking of joinng a club, my only problam is they meet twice a week! One of them I defineately can't do and they run in the evening. I am such a morning runner I find running at the end of teh day really hard. Perhaps I will join though as DH has just finished a job, so I iwll be able to go out in the eves now (until he is working again, but that will be at least Spet/Oct time) It would be great to get extra motivation from that.

I did about 45 mins today, this week I did one v fast 2.9 miles (strange distnace but good circuit) in 23 mins. Hopefully I am on for a 54 minute 10km in 2 weeks. Next weekend I am going to do my 6.5 mile run and see the time, then I'll have a better idea.

Dannie · 19/06/2006 11:56

Had my Race for Life yesterday. Wasn't sure I'd do it as I was very sore after doing the mothers' race at DD's sports day without warming up. Big mistake, but no one else warms up and I didn't want to look like I was taking it really seriously Blush. RfL was a huge crowd and I got stuck behind some walkers, but I restarted my watch at the 1km mark and did 4km in 19.06 mins. Seriously doubt I'll sustain the pace for 10km, but it was encouraging!

crunchie · 19/06/2006 12:25

Blooming walkers!!!

But 4km in 19 mins, thats a serious pace :) If you keep that up even adding additional time for the length of race you would be under 50 mins!! Maybe offering you 2 mins was a dumb idea!! I'll be happy if I do under 54 mins. :)

Dannie · 19/06/2006 14:38

I was surprised, too. Wonder if the course was measured right Smile I cannot imagine doing a 10k in less than 55 mins, but shall we forget the handicap and just see how we go? I seem to be running again, so that's the main thing!

crunchie · 19/06/2006 19:57

We'll do that then :)

leogaela · 20/06/2006 10:22

well done Dannie! Next time learn the lesson - when you do organised runs with huge groups of poeple you will find you are fast enough to start near the front.
No running for me this weekend, saturday I just didn't find the time and sunday I had a cycling day. I fear my running may suffer now I have finally got my race bike out again it felt good :)! Contemplating running home from work sometime....maybe this week.

Pidge · 20/06/2006 12:56

Wow Dannie - you speed merchant Grin!

No run for me at the weekend either - flipping dd2 gave me another of her stinking colds, so what with a temperature and asthma (which I always get with a cold) I was laid up. Feeling ok now, and tonight is usually my club running night, but dp is out, plus there's THE MATCH! So maybe tomorrow ...

Crunchie - I can only do one of the three sessions my club do every week - and even that I don't always make. But the joining fee is so cheap (ca £30 annually) when you compare it to a gym membership or whatever, it's worth every penny. I also find it hard to run in the evenings, especially after a day at work, but once I've forced myself out I usally feel really good.

Speaking of morning runs ... do you morning runners eat breakfast before you go out? If so, how long do you wait before running? And if you don't eat breakfast - how far do you manage to run without keeling over? I'm a bit of a wimp in the mornings and need my food!

Pidge · 20/06/2006 12:58

Have persuaded dp to let me do another 10k ... so that's two lined up for the summer for me! And lots of us due out on July 2nd.

Busy - how's the RFL training going?

lapsedrunner · 20/06/2006 19:57

Ok so I haven't posted for ages (but have been lurking and having a peep Grin). Just wanted to add my orienteering event to the list, it sounds grand but it's an open event for anyone age 35 and over (and I'm a few years over!). Not been running that much recently so not expecting great results, it will just be good to be doing a bit of "cunning running" again.

I have been doing some Nordic Walking though...leogaela will certainly know what I'm talking about.

On, On.......etc Grin.

Twink · 20/06/2006 22:29

Pidge, I run early(ish) on Sundays with a group - we go out at 8.30.

If I know it's likely to be a 'long' run, ie over 8 miles, I'm sad enough to set my alarm for 7.30 & have a bowl of porridge & a cup of tea but if it's less, I'll take pot luck & grab a handful of winegums as I go out of the door - unless dd's got me up early, which is unusual these days; if I'm running she tends to sleep in so I get up 10 mins before the run starts, whereas if I've decided to go for a lie-in she'll be up with the lark...

OP posts:
leogaela · 21/06/2006 07:34

Lapsedrunner, you are right Nordic walking is THE thing to do over here at the moment! The 10K I did a couple of weeks ago had a Nordic walking event as well, it was so funny, we were sitting in a restaurant afterwards and there were hundreds of ladies coming past all 'click, click, click, clicking' with their stick on the road all in time with each other. If I was there I would be the one that would be out of rythm with the others !

Pidge, I also always wake up famished, if I go for a run in the morning a well chomped banana is always good or some cereal. Its something you can train yourself to do, when marathon and triathlon training I got used to eating cereal bars and bananas while running but if you eat too much to start with you may get a stitch. You could also try to eat a special high energy sports bar or drink a high energy isotonic drink.

crunchie · 21/06/2006 22:59

pidge I'm afraid I am the opposite I run far better on an empty tummy I think. I don't like running after lunch, in fact the other week I ran 2 hrs after lunch and I felt really sick. I usually get up and go and can do 10km without any problem. When I run at weekends I might have had a large latte (Saturday treat) but I run at least a couple of hours later.

I eat breakfast when I get to work (about 9.30), if I have run or not. I don't eat breakfast the minute I get up

Pidge · 22/06/2006 08:42

Twink - oh if only I had to set my alarm to get up at 7.30, my dd2 is one of those kids who likes to rise and shine at 5.30am!

I'm like Leo - starving in the morning - and I feel pretty terrible running before breakfast, which is annoying because it's a good time to fit in a run and dp doesn't mind having the kids then. Plus it doesn't eat into our daytime activities too much. It's only really a problem on Sunday when I do a long run (1.5 hours or so), and I think I'll have to stick with my 'eat and then wait an hour or so' routine.

quanglewangle · 22/06/2006 21:31

Hello again everyone, I'm back, sort of.
My foot has just about recovered but is still a bit sore. Have started training again with about 10days to the race. I managed 5Km on the treadmill with a 3min walking break half way. Am quite pleased, though it is very frustrating as I could do 7Km before.

So I am rather hoping I get stuck behind some walkers!!

busywizzy · 22/06/2006 22:10

Hello everyone. I did my first proper run yesterday after 5 weeks of being laid up. I ran 4K in 25 minutes with two short walking breaks. I was really pleased with my time as although I had a few breaks, my speed was much better than the last time I ran. And my knee feels OK today

My RFL is next Wednesday and I'm hoping to get two more runs in before then. I've also enquired about joining a local running club. Thank you for all the inspiration you've given me. It felt great yesterday to be out running again

paddingtonbear1 · 22/06/2006 22:17

Glad you are back running again busy, and your knee is better!
My knee isn't so bad now either, but I am now well out of the running habit. Not even sure I want to go back to it! Cyclists' thread anyone?!

Pidge · 24/06/2006 13:06

Busy - I've done some of my best runs after a break - I always imagine I'll have lost all my fitness, but in some ways I think you're re-invigorated.

Went to our local running shop this morning and indulged in a new sports bra and lightweight running top. And am now plotting a long-run tomorrow morning to try them out!

crunchie · 24/06/2006 16:51

OK done my last long run before the 10km next weekend and did 6.5 miles in 55:29, which equates to 10km in 53 mins. Now THAT would be amazing, all I am hoping for is under 54 mins.

So Dannie, who will it be

Dannie · 24/06/2006 21:44

Crunchie, I have no doubt you will win. With Motherinferior's help, I have already identified a tasteful trifle to send as your prize. OTOH, I am now running again, however slowly, so HOORAY! DH is away all next week, so I have to go out v. early tomorrow before he leaves and trudge round the park. And I shall!

crunchie · 24/06/2006 21:55

Dannie I have been watching your times and I am v v worried BUT it worked didn't it!! You wanted to get motivated again, and so whatever the results you are

One day I would LOVE to go sub 50 mins, but I have no idea if I could (doubtful tbh)
